Petty Officer Travis Obendorf was injured during this rescue and would later succumb to his injures approximately one month later. There were a number of people on the Alaska Mist (22) and a number needed to be evacuated, some went by helicopter. When the Cutter Waesche arrived, it was decided that the remaining non-essential crew would be removed via a 24ft Zodiac boat. With five more Alaska Mist crew and other Coast Guard members aboard, the Zodiac returned back to the cutter with Obendorf at the bow. Rough seas cause a collision between the boat and a capture net at the rear ramp of the cutter, causing a serious head injury to Obendorf even though he was wearing a helmet. Medical treatment was provided and he was later flown to Seattle but he died approximately month later.

So sorry for him but I'm grateful the coast guard were there and their passion and commitment to save any who fall victims of the sea, land and air. R.I.P. Good sir we salute you!!

I work in EMS aviation. These pilots and crew members, flight medics, flight nurses and rescue are the best. I just flight follow. I'm amazed on what these people do.

Thank God and the Coast Guard for their service, because if it wasn't for them we wouldn't be able to enjoy the bounty of the sea. Which unfortunately is out of my price range now. But it was good while it lasted. Lol

Probably could’ve done a little better if there wasn’t a camera guy in the rescue copter taking up room for essential folks

i was onboard the Stratton when this happened i remember the Capitan going over the 1MC while we were underway letting us know what happened on the Waesche.

They've fit 26 in 1 jayhawk H-60 in 2015 in the gulf of Mexico.

So in a rescue situation cameramen should not be taking up seats on the helicopter. Just a thought.

Not just the cameraman but the cameraman filming the cameraman Edit: Also the cameraman on deck filming the same basket the cameraman in the helicopter is filming while being filmed by the other helicopter cameraman Edit2: Which is all already being filmed by a fisherman with a cellphone. Most people don't like the coast guard but the rescue guys like these aren't the ones who are inspecting your boats and writing tickets. They are like the seals or rangers of the coast guard.

So if the boat would just be broke and they got rescued would they just leave the boat? Or would the captain or owner try to come back to fix it if it didn't sink?

People disparage the CG a LOT. But some of the stuff they do equals or rivals in some cases many modern military activities in danger

They and the Navy tend to trend lower as far as self inflicted death but in active duty their deaths arent as low as one might think

What? The time they were safe doesnt really matter... they could be a few hours away from drifting to shore and being ripped apart on rocks, or only a few minutes from a large wave swamping the ship and sinking it!

Most likely I was a bm2 in the coast guard and when that happens we out them in tow

I dont get why these vessels don't have life-boats they can transfer to in these situations.

Yeah... Which one would you like to be in during extremely rough sea with wave could just go over it A floaty dingy that can be fill with water Or a tough boat build to float Only in extreme emergency like a boat capsized and sink that people use those so that they can be rescued afterwards

And 99.9% of the time they have enough space. Even without a cameraman on board they wouldn’t be able to pick them all up in one go. Helicopters only have so much space on board.

@@denniswilder3014 because at the time abandoning ship was actually the safest option for them. The ship was adrift in rough seas and could have rolled over at any time. It was safer to pull them off than it was to leave them on. In rough seas like that you don’t gamble with the lives of your crew. They said they couldn’t fix the breakdown at sea so the captain chose the safety of his crew over trying to save the ship. Ships can be replaced but people can’t. If you had half an ounce of common sense and paid attention to the video you would realize that

@@FordRangerGuy2011 they never stated the the vessel was being towed in in the video they made it seem all is lost.as a retired deck hand of 30 plus years have stayed on the boat while being towed dead sticked to keep vitals working to save our ship

I did some research online and found the name of the vessel and then went on marine traffic and found that the vessel is still active as of a couple weeks ago. This incident happened years ago so it’s not hard to put 2 and 2 together to figure out that the ship was salvaged and repaired and is still afloat today
