Thanks for sharing a bit of your history with us. You're my favourite KZread channel, Walt, and I'm 100% sincere writing this. I've learned more from you about ham portable operation and home made antennas than from anyone else. Best 73s from temporarily salty Alain in Brittany. No great DX this time, but I'll be back in July with more antennas to try thanks to you. Congratulations for the QST article too!

Salty Walt! Excellent! About your rant: I am retired now but I had a job where I dealt with the public every damn day. Most are regular people but there are a few that are really quite odd. Ham radio attracts a lot of those people. They hide behind their radio and pretend to be experts about nearly everything. These guys have no life and they have repelled what few friends they might have had. That why they have a "cloaking devise" (the radio) so they don't have to interact with actual humans. Trolls hide under a bridge, odd balls hide behind radios. Pay them no mind. They are not worth it. Your videos teach the rest of us lots of things and it is obvious to any normal person that you have a passion for the hobby. Full Steam Ahead!

Same in the UK, I have met a few predators you wouldn't want near your family. Awful people, all experts but know FA. I have a full licence but hardly use radio ad there are no normal people about. At least on CB you could get normal people who didn't want to sit telling you how much money they have or who they know, or what radios they have. It's boring. Stick to CB and Meshtastic.

If you want to do generalising then CBers are all absolute morons with no knowledge about the key radio technologies they are using. See? Rubbish, isn't it. I've met plenty of fantastic CBers AND amateur licence holders, and this really isn't the best way to go about trying to make things better. Some of us ARE trying, you know...

Thanks Walt for the video and appropriate rant. Don’t know what’s wrong with some individuals…. HamVention was quite an adventure when I attended on 2019 - the displays, the vendors, the give-a-ways and the “pork chop sandwich”! I attended several of the seminars, which as a beginner ham, were confusing but a learning process. The more you see and checkout the more one learns. Please keep safe, enjoy the trek and the show. Looking forward to hearing about your adventure. AC3EA

Thanks for your effort to share info. I love to experiment with antennas. I've been a ham 59 years and learn something new almost every day. I really appreciate your approach to your channel. Your info helps me to decide what to try next. I travel a lot in the RV to locations all over the U.S. and sometimes next to salt water. Ignore the simple minds and keep on chugging. You regularly prove you are correct. I saw a similar negative response by the gatekeepers to above ground radials. Well, 125 countries later on 160m, with just 2 above ground radials, I dare say they were incorrect. This was on CW before FT8. The longer you have been around, the more inaccuracies of old wisdom you will see corrected if you have an open mind. Thanks again for your efforts they are really appreciated here. 73's Dave K4CA

Congrats on QST! "Compliment Sandwich" is more polite than what I learned in military leadership circles. We called it a "Sh*t-Filled Twinkee." Sure, a SFT is sweet at first, but then... "What is this? I don't like it." The end of a SFT may be sweet, too, but the recipient has already tossed it and moved on. The lesson: Don't pass out SFTs! Either praise or critique, not both. 👍 Just thought I'd share a fun memory. 😂 Keep up the good work!

Hi Walt, sorry to hear about the nasty comments. I’m very new to Amateur Radio, got my UK Foundation licence a few months ago. I bought a G90 after seeing the success you’ve had with it, made an EFHW and within minutes of first power up was talking to someone in Bulgaria, some 2000k distance. Got the Xiegu DE-19, I really enjoy FT8 (I can mess with it remotely using VNC). I’ve managed to display the G90’s waterfall on my Mac using the I/Q out into a 192khz audio interface using SDRAngel - you get 4 times the bandwidth that’s displayed on the tiny G90 screen! As for antennas, I have a real obsession, learning and experimenting every day Thank you for the inspiration.

I think in ham radio, nobody know it all and there is always something new to learn and in many of your videos, it appears you're learning along with the audience which I think is pretty cool. Don't pay attention to the haters, there are people who will complain no matter what. Only concern yourself with those of us who believe in you, not the ones who don't. Keep up the great work you do and have a blast in Dayton!

I have theory that most people in this hobby are used to being "the local nerd" in their social circles. They are used to being the one knowing things about technology, the one that other people asks about technology. When you put a bunch of these people, that are used to being the one who knows stuff, in a room together - or on social media together - sparks fly more often than in other situations. Some can be a bit arrogant. There are justs as many great, interesting, creative and humble people in the hobby though, willing to learn, inspire and experiment. Thanks for some great videos.

Well said Walt!! I love the content you bring us. Each video you post, you're using a different type of antenna/balun. My opinion is that you're showing us what we can do, if we put our minds to work, & get busy. The types of baluns out there is staggering, as you have shown. I think it is awesome that antennas made from a few lengths of wire, coax & balun can get a radio signal vast distances. You possibly know I'm in Port Pirie South Australia. What I'm about to tell you, I think you might have a laugh. I was at a family member's house one Christmas Day. I had with me, my Icom IC-718 radio, Kenwood AT-120 tuner, about 10 feet of coax, PL259 on each end, home made 1:1 balun, & long wire antenna, about 33' long. I set this up, & threw the antenna up one of the trees. The partner of a sister of mine said : " Good luck getting out past the power lines!!" He came back out a few minutes later, & he was surprised to hear I was talking to another operator about 2,000 miles away, up far north Queensland (VK4). He tried big noting himself about working on a fishing trawler, & using a 100 watt radio. I just laughed, Told him the Marine band has fixed channels, & us amateur radio operators do not have "channels" as such. To me, the hobby is a never ending learning experience.

Thanks for sharing walt. Couple of things came to mind, as we know yt is open to people's opinionsthats for sure, and many think we have to be connected to yt , because its part of the hobby hi. I wonder how folk would get on if there was no yt, would ham radio survive. I always remind myself, it is just a hobby, and without yt radio goes on, as i just demonstrated in my record video, on my very small channel. 73 zl3xdj.

Hey Walt. No compliment sandwich here, you truly have a great KZread channel. I disagree with you sometimes, but, agree or disagree, you always make me think. We are both old radio guys. If I was your dad (or PD) I’d remind you you only get offended if you let yourself be offended. I did talk radio for 26 years. I learned that everyone is a critic and I learn something from every one of them. Learn to eat the meat and spit out the bones. Sad ham Al, WBØAL

As Im sure you already know Hamvention is no longer in Dayton,it is in Xena at the Greene County fair grounds. I got to go the first year it was held there. I lived in Cedarville at the time and the fairgrounds was 10 miles from my house so one Bucket list item off the list. Enjoy the Hamvention. Love your channel. Keep doing what your doing.

I grew up in a suburb of Dayton, so it'll always be the Dayton Hamvention to me 😅

Well done on your channel success Walt! I really enjoy your channel and have gotten some great ideas from your content. Until now I had never heard of a "comment sandwich" so that is a new term to me. Just put your comment band stop filter inline (common moron choke) and block that negativity! There is enough of that in society without having to deal with it on a personal level.

Hi Walt. Firstly...how on earth can anyone justify being downright nasty to you? I don't understand it, because your channel is amazingly informative, interesting, innovative, & inspirational. You genuinely like to help people, & that's the spirit of amateur radio. Secondly...you don't bum yer chat, as they say in Ireland, ie, you never try to be what you are not, or try to talk yourself up? What your channel does, is teach people about thing's, backed up by you getting out there & trying & testing antenna's, baluns, unun's, etc, etc. So it's backed up by the facts of your experimentation. Thirdly....I am probably a bit of a rambler when it comes to messaging, but that's because, I enjoy your channel, & appreciate what you are doing, Buddy? And I like to let you know that something has worked for me, that I learnt from your channel? I may ask a question in a general term, but honestly, I understand you have a very full life, & if you are not able to reply, that's fine by me, there's only one of you, Buddy? Fourthly...please keep doing what you are doing, because it works, & it works well. Many thanks. Best 73 de Pete GI0FZT.
