Coast to Coast Walk | Solo

Alfred Wainwright's classic Coast to Coast Walk. A truly magnificent long-distance walk from St Bees at the Irish Sea to Robin Hood's Bay at the North Sea.
This 192-mile footpath passes through three contrasting national parks: the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the North York Moors National Park.
I hiked this solo in 14 days (11-24 July 2020) and wild camped most of the time. For my full gear list visit lighterpack.com/r/9z0x3t

Thanks for the video - walked the route Sept 22 (hotels and luggage transfers so not as much a challenge). As I only live 6 mile from St Bees, thinking of walking in reverse next year and walking my way back home.

Great video Brad and it brings back lots of happy memories from my C2C in 1980, 10 day solo hike with my 35kg pack, good job I left the kitchen sink at home, but wish I had taken some camera gear with me. Now all I have are memories of 40 yrs ago and videos like your. (Y)

Hi Anthony, thanks for the kind words. C2C in 10 days is an amazing achievement; and there’s definitely something special (and challenging) about doing it solo! It’s great to have a platform like this to be able to share the experience with folks like yourself. All the best.

I really enjoyed this Brad. You definitely took the viewer with you on the walk. The C2C walk is definitely on my to do list. I recently walked the Cleveland Way and met a few C2C walkers on the way. They all had great things to say about it. Not sure about the cows though. They seem to sense my fear of them and won’t move out of the way for me😆

Hi Anthony, thanks for the kind words. The Cleveland Way is really beautiful and I thoroughly enjoyed walking a small portion of it during that stretch of the C2C. Yes, the cows along the Yorkshire Dales are plentiful (and some are better behaved than others)!

Hi Brad - nice job on the filming. you did better with your iPhone than many of the other youtubers have done with camera equipment. Well done. It looks like you wild camped the entire way. Did you have any issues finding a suitable camping spot?

Thanks Richard, appreciate the kind comments. I reckon it was 80% camping and 20% accommodation (was forced to stay in a hotel one night because of a rolled ankle). 3 of the nights were at proper campsites where I was lured in because of the hot showers. No, it wasn’t really an issue finding a suitable wild camping spot; sometimes I’d need to walk just a little further in order to find a suitable pitch. Looking back, I would’ve made more of an effort to have wild camped for the most part :) All the best

Hi Brad you captured the feel of the walk well. I hiked this from the 13-25 July some of it with Snowymatrix see his channel. We had really bad weather over the lakes to Shap so looks like you we're luckier. Great video for the memories. Atb Dave 😁👍

Hi Dave, thanks for the comments it's really appreciated. Yes, I had fairly decent weather overall so can't complain. I did have some really bad weather around the Nine Standards with the wind and rain. I didn't see anyone for most of that day; so had to dig deep and also trust the GPS to avoid getting lost as it was so wet and foggy. The C2C was such a great walk and I met the most friendly people along the way. I just wish I took more footage around the Littlebeck and May beck area, which is really pretty. Had a look at some of Snowymatrix's clips - looks like you guys had good company and a decent wildcamp at the River Liza.

Hey Brad, really loved your film of the C2C. It's one of the best I've seen & I've watched loads of them in preparation for my own adventure!! So refreshing to just have music with no chat & let the scenery & trail speak for itself. Lots of nice tent shots too! 😍😁 What did you film it with?

Hey Sarah, I’m glad you liked it; and thanks for the kind comments! I shot everything on my iPhone 8 (1080p, 30fps) and used a tiny (gorillapod-type) tripod to help get some of the shots. All the best in preparation for your adventures! Cheers, Brad

Just noticed I see you wore the altars so did I. Didn't get one blister not even a bruised toe nail really good. Just found my right Achilles slightly agitated but otherwise great 😁

Yes, used the Lone Peak 4.5's for this trip. I had a very similar experience to you in fact - didn't get a single blister, however, the achilles issue kicked in with me around 110 miles (and only on my left foot). I do see on other forums that this appears to be an issue with the 4.5 version. If they can sort that out then I think it's the ideal through-hiking shoe.

Hey True North, no real issues... just plenty of them along the Yorkshire Dales section. A bit unnerving if you're not used to them, especially some of the bigger bulls.
