Coal train climbs mullan (LONG VIDEO)
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
This one is loooong: 23 minutes. It shows the same coal train as it first passes Tobin, just after the mid helpers are attached, then rounding the curve at Austin, and finally as it passes Skyline. I'd like to have caught it as it exited the tunnel and crested the pass, but by the time the DPU Locomotive has passed Skyline the lead locos are already exiting the tunnel. Long enough for you Dave O ???

I always love how you capture the bigness of this area. Locomotives in run 8 up a steep grade with a heavy load. Music to my ears. Excellent video Scott. Always amazing.

MRL and BNSF pushing the continental divide. Great video in big sky country. I drove thru there. Very steep terrain.
Even though I am not a Modern Diesel fan,l do love the EMD Sound, it Reminds me of the Southern Pacific Tunnel Motors,and Sd45s my favorite Railroad.

very stunning !!! i sure would love to ride my 4wheeler there.
I lived in Helena for 7 yrs, and never once watch those Mullen climbs. Sure wish I had done that. On my bucket list. Nothing like that here in S. Or
I think the mid train helpers, Raillink had the best sound in notch 8.
I just had to watch this video again Scott.
Love the sound that comes from notch 8. Imagine what the noise would be like in the cab?

Scott, as usual another fine video which captures the essence of mountain railroading, and Mullan Pass in particular. Your timed panning of the camera to the next shot really is your trademark. We hope to be adding a Helena/Eastern Mullan Pass stream on our www.railroadradio.net website this spring, and if we do, I'd like to feature this video to let the folks listening in via radio what the drama looks like in 'real world'. Thanks for all your efforts in the video productions. It is very much appreciated.

9:30 mark and the helpers are screaming like they're next to you from a half mile away or more... Plus the families next to the curve must be rail fans or are forced to get used to the traffic on such cheap land to build so close to it...limited slip after the curve but much needed to keep the pace up I can assume.... I still can't get over the length and grade these consists need to get to Spokane at the most...
Great video BNSF Railroad trains cep up good work friends 👍

Great!
The way the locomotives hold their speed on that grade suggests they are barely challenged by Mullan pass!

Here I'm pulling on average 660,000 pounds per rail car, running a v-16 fiat Alice tug boat engine with full inter axel wheel lock deployment and sand spreader on stand by. 3000 thousand brake wheel horse power each wheel. 850,000 tractive drive to the rail. Let's go with throttle up. Puuuull

Bullshit. This isn't you. You seem to have a major love for this tug boat engine, even though you can't even spell the name right. lol
Fantastic video and the audio is spot on! I’ve subscribed. How many trains pass through Mullen Pass every day?

40.000 plus horse power on this one? thanks for a very good video.
Is there anything that can compare to a big hill, lots of loaded coal cars, and big 12 & 16 cylinder motors at notch 8? The SD70s have such a nice sound. Almost as good as the old SD45 20 cylinder motors.

@@ScottHiddelston Thanks! I think I've seen that one 3-4 times. One of the best train vids for audio. I have a 9 speaker setup and those 20 cylinder engines sound just grand!
Nice video. Does this train belong to BNSF or Montana Rail Link? Having MRL mid-train helpers is what confuses me.
@ScottHiddelston
7 жыл бұрын
SantaFe19484 the train belongs to BNSF but is sent through MRL as part of a trackage rights agreement between them. MRL gets paid to do this, and it is their responsibility to take it to Hauser yard ( I believe ) north of Spokane where BNSF takes over again. Where this video was taken, the train has MRL crews throughout.
Great

Where does that coal end up? China? And, where from ? Eastern Mt. ?
Excellent footage! Me and the wife will be passing this way later this year; any advice on good (legit) access points that won't upset the residents?

Scott, where do the four MRL locomotives disconnect from the coal train after they get over Mullan Pass? I'd like to see how and where they do that disconnect.
@ScottHiddelston

Larry, they mostly disconnect at Blossburg just west of the pass. Sometimes the helpers stay in place down to Elliston or even Avon.
