Laszlo, I’m a very basic fencer and have a few questions. Once the arm is kept extended, I tell beginner fencers to think of not moving the point with their arm or upper body, but rather with their feet. Also, I stress trying to hit the target before the foot hits the piste. Am I correct? One more question. As opposed to fixating on the desired point of contact, how important is it to widen the field of vision, keeping the entire target in sight? Thanks for posting these videos - they’re very helpful.

Hi, Thank you for your question. Yes, once arm extended, then the point is point at the target and then the foot comes after. The key principle is always arm first! So, I am not sure whether I understood the 2nd question right. I assume that the question is Should we look at the target as a whole body or rather than focusing only the target that fencer need to hit. Let me know if I am wrong. In learning period, fencer should focus on the fixed target especially in lesson. But in fencing bout, it is different because there is no clue where is best target then fencer should look at the entire target and then find the vulnerable area opened to be hit which in real situation will be harder. So, more advance than basic lesson, then coach will need to teach the preparation to trick opponent to open the wanted target. It will be different kind of lesson that I have not put the clip on yet.

Awesome videos! I teach a free youth class at a community center and your videos help me teach a great deal. I used to be the fencer and see how playing it and teaching it can be worlds apart. Do you have anything on the foil circular cut? It's a strange name to give a a thrusting attack. Is it basically a coupe ending in a thrust where the attack began to gain opposition?
