During the disbandment of the USSR Ukraine was let out of the Union on the basis of neutrality, which is explicitly stated in its independence documents. Break that - and we get what we get.

You are the king of bringing up irrelevant subjects. If you can imagine, the neutrality condition is a highly, highly limiting one. It would defy belief to imagine that Ukraine imposed it on itself. In fact, this is something that was explicitly approved by the Supreme Soviet during Ukraine’s USSR exit. This was done to specifically ensure geopolitical stability in Eastern Europe, and particularly in the Black Sea region, which is absolutely key to naval operations. Breaking the neutrality caused Russia to annex Crimea to safeguard its base. The current war is just a continuation of it. @@bonnie7898 Ukraine left USSR as part of disbandment. It was a process, not a “fell apart”, as you may be led to believe, which was initiated by Gorbachev and his cabinet. And first and foremost, neutrality was written into Ukranian Declaration of Independence, even more fundamental than constitution. All of this law-making was happening WHILE Ukraine was still a Soviet republic and was agreed upon with the Supreme Soviet. The neutrality condition was specifically applied to Ukraine to ensure peaceful coexistence as well as letting Russia keep its Crimea naval base, for which it was paying rent for many years. As soon as Russia sensed the danger of Ukraine being on the NATO path (after 2008 NATO proclamations, after pro-NATO coup of 2014), it was forced to annex it. Russia doesn’t care whether Ukraine is eligible or not at this time. All it cares about is that Ukraine is on its path to joining NATO, something incessantly mentioned by Western leaders monthly, and it represents a grave geopolitical danger to Russia. Much like Soviet military presence in Cuba presented a similar danger to the US. Nor does Russia cares whether one believes that NATO alliance is defensive or not and whether countries ask to join or are forced to join. Russia views it as a way of expanding US geopolitical influence in Europe. See the Cuba example above - the union between USSR and Cuba was also a mutual agreement. Yet, the US was ready to start a nuclear was over this. Ok - why did you make a point that independence vote was overwhelming? No one is disputing it, as this is a known fact. Even if there was no explicit neutrality condition - NATO’s presence in the Black Sea region is totally unacceptable to Russia and it would have invaded anyway.
