CNJ 113 Bouncing & Steaming on Old Anthracite Rails
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
CNJ 113 under steam once again pulling Santa's Train on the old rails between Schuylkill Haven and Minersville, Pennsylvania, bouncing around as the 0-6-0 switcher is pressed into passenger duties in December 2021, where in its former life helped served this rich anthracite coal region.
In fact, the Minersville Branch still serves an integral part of Reading & Northern Railroad's anthracite coal traffic from the New St. Nicholas breaker above town, on former Reading Railroad rails, not too far from CNJ, PRR, and LV remnants. Speaking of Saint Nicholas, he is seen riding the train as well! More information about this locomotive below:
Built as a switching locomotive by Schenectady Works in 1923, the anthracite burner is right at home in the Skook region of Pennsylvania with a history of hauling rich anthracite mined from the region. As an 0-6-0 switcher, or CNJ class "6S46" for '6' Wheel 'S'witcher '46',000 lb Tractive Effort, the duties were limited around yards or shops to build and break up trains; therefore, these locomotives did not require the front or rear guide trucks for the slower speed operations.

Thanks to the Project 113 volunteers and to the Reading & Northern railroad for hosting these trips on their rails.

I Love Every American Steam Trains the Most
Great job - I especially loved the scene at 8:28 with the telegraph poles and sun rays hitting the smoke in the background!

Thanks Joe, I appreciate it!
An absolutely beautiful video! And not just of 113 and her train, but the locomotive and the train in the context of their surroundings. Wonderfully moody and atmospheric, like a time machine! Looking at the train passing though the woods I couldn't help but be reminded of some lines from a Robert Frost poem, they could even spoken by 113 herself: "These woods are lovey, dark, and deep. But I have promises to keep! And miles to go before I sleep. And miles to go before I sleep." The bouncing made me a bit uneasy, like maybe 113's being pushed a LITTLE too fast, but considering all the sweat, love, and certainly blood they put into restoring her I'm sure the guys running her know what they're doing. One thing the wheel-slips told me, 113's doing all the work! The tail-end diesel's just there to make the return runs easier!

You are correct about the diesel not assisting, it's on there in order to back the train south since there is no wye track to turn the train around, the steam engine always faces north for these trips. Probably experienced some slip on the downed leaves. Anyway, thanks for the kind words, glad you enjoyed!

@@CentralPennRailProductions You're welcome! I figured with a 46,000 pound tractive effort, more than some CNJ Pacifics by the way, 113 didn't need any help with that passenger consist! 113's one muscular beast!
4:25 I have never seen such amazing scenery to take a photograph/ video of the train, 100/100

Thank you!
Ya know I'm a big fan of no commentary. Just the sounds of the engine, the train cars the track and the ambient sounds of the world around. By far the best videos I've ever seen. Topping Railfan Danny.
Great video and a merry Christmas to everyone! 🎄
Wow. Awesome work to the video. The Christmas lights goes great at the end. Glad 113 is still running.
Great video. I love watching the old iron run!
Bob and Weave, Bob and Weave. Amazing!

Observer: That bouncing scares me... Fans: What a happy steam girl. :3
She's certainly a bit lively on that rail! I wonder how often the stoker missed the fire hole?
Merry Christmas! Great vid as well. I was there sometime this month but I forget..
Glad to see you back
I just uploaded my vid from seeing 113. Good video
Tanks for the ride!
At the 4:43 mark, the locomotive was rocking so much, it seemed like it was going to derail.
Merry Christmas! Wonderful footage shot , Thank you
WOW, the good ol' dayz. That whistle sounds like MONEY. If you can hear it then there's Money over there. I was first to like it!.
Awesome video
This is Awesome
Well done, nice video
Great footage! Man, I don't know why anyone would pick a switcher to restore for so much running; it looks like it's gonna hop right off the rails! Gonna wear out its running gear and the track too.

It's only one of two surviving CNJ steam engines, the other one, a 4-4-2 Camelback, is in the B&O Museum. But THIS one runs! Ther rest of the Jersey Central's steam engines all went to the scrapper. So enjoy this one!
Please open the camera lens up do we can see more detail?
Nice video. Boy that engine sure bounces around.
An excellent quality video, well photographed and edited. Just curious about settings, was depth by defocus used and color setting?
Incredible video Central Penn!
You should come chase the Gettysburg and Northern railroad. It makes for a nice day of railfanning.
CNJ 592 really should be restored to operation. That is, if it's even legal for a camelback locomotive to operate anymore. I would say we should try to build a camelback 4-6-0, but it's has been illegal since the 1930's. That being said however, we need more CNJ steam.
Hurray for the central New Jersey it's a shame there's no Lehigh valley steam would it be great to see Lehigh valley steam locomotive but the Jersey Central engines fine Bobby Taylor
Awesome Video 🥀🌼🇮🇳🥀🌼
Go, Steam Train, Go
Some details can't be seen. It looks like night.
Tomorrow
113 should doublehead with 2102
