    More of a demo video than an instructional video, which is fine. But being new to CNC, I'd really like to see a video on "how to." ie. What software are you using, how do you set up the tool paths (which strategy to use for each operation, which bit to choose, etc), what software is driving the router, stuff like that. Thx.

    I was curious how you maintain alignment of the work piece when switching between the first headstock operation on the face when it's hanging off the table and then when you reposition the neck to do the back profile shaping?

    I usually do this by indicating off of a known point on the stock. I like to mill a piece of MDF to keep the long access (in the case of my machine the X access) aligned. I run one edge of the neck blank through the joiner; this makes for a nice face to reference from for the Y position. On scarf joints like this, the break line of the scarf joint is where I indicate the second access. It's a complex process that requires a lot of attention to detail. I have explained this process in several videos. If you can't find any, let me know, I may need to cover this topic again.

    @@TwoCherriesIns Thanks for breaking it down. I'm still trying to figure out a elegant way to accomplish that task. Especially for a non-scarfed angled headstock. I think you gave me some good ideas.

    doing the Fret board, what are the operation, you use, for the radius? Then the 2d contour, to cut out line is just normal appears! Then the fret slots, what operation do you use? Thanks, Love your stuff and methods. I am ready to cut a neck tomorrow, all operation ready. Then the fingerboard, when i figure out the operations!

    Thanks, most people use a parallel toolpath to cut the radius, I have started using the 3d scallop toolpath with a 3/4" ball nose bit. The scallop operation is less machine time than parallel and the surface sands clean a little bit easier. The outline is cut with a countore operation, and the fret slots are cut with a trace so they can follow the radius.

    How were you holding down your stock on the neck and fretboard? I didn’t see any clamps or vacuum system. Thanks!

    It's the masking tape a CA glue trick. I burnish in the tape to the part and the spoil board and use CA activator on one side. It holds very well and you never have to work about collisions with clams.

    I have a CNC coming to my shop in about a month. What would you suggest for 3D tool paths for mandolins and archtop guitars? I have my analog patterns. I was thinking I would have them sent somewhere to scan and write the G code.

  • @TwoCherriesIns

    @TwoCherriesIns

    I personally would suggest modeling them in fusion 360, I don't do anything with scanning and if the output of the scan is STL than I personally don't think its worth it. 3d modeling is difficult but in the end worth the effort.

    They are .021" I picked them up from eBay, nothing special. You can also get buy with a .031" but the slot is a little lose and you have to glue in the frets. The .021" runs a little tight for the fretwire I use.

    Awesome question, these are .021" end mills (an inexpensive 10 pack of eBay) the medium fretwire tang dimension is .024" so I usually chase the slot with a fretting saw. If the fretboard is a blind tang design I will add a second pass with a .002 offset. This was cut a 20IPM and a stepdown of less than half the bit (its easy to break these so the slower the better)
