I'm about to replace my master cylinder on my 1990 Wrangler yj. Needed this video. One tip though, use the box end of your wrench on the bleed valve, that way it doesn't fall on you when you drop it. Thanks for your info.

BIgfootbabah - did you solve this problem? Have the same problem on a '91 XJ. Hard to shift when warmed up. I'm using MT90. Still no help. Since it's worse when hot/warm, makes me think there's air in the system? Stuck.

Yup... shoulda gone with the external slave swap. So much easier to bleed.

My clutch has been giving me a headache for months. Replaced slave, master and even the lines. I've isolated and tested everything and it all hold vacuum. If I gravity bleed it then it's good for about a day of driving then magically gets air again and it doesn't leak anywhere. Driving me nuts

Hey Dale! Great video! Quick question ... Is there any sort of trick to get the plastic black quick disconnect off the slave cylinder. I have 2 wrenches on it, but it won't budge. Thanks in advance!

I've put about 10K miles on my 6 speed. Anytime I am merging to hwy speed and I'm hardly pushing 3000 rpm I can smell something somewhere is burning. I've been driving stick since the day one and so it was quite obvious to me where the burned smell is coming from . Initially I thought it's just a new clutch and within few short weeks it will surely go away but it never did. The clutch operates exactly the same way as it did when I picked up the Jeep new at the dealer's lot . It's not the easiest clutch to master that goes without saying but I wonder if maybe during the first recall the mechanic didn't clean the bell housing properly and there is still some left over oil that just burns. I would find it strange that dry clutch would keep on producing the burned odour for such a long time. I suspect I would feel some slippage as well by this time but there is none.I took the vehicle back to the dealer to see if they find any issue with it but guess what? They never did and the only person according to the highly trained technician the only person who can smell the clutch is me. I gave up on FCA and now it will be either Centreforce or a trade . How difficult it would be for a mechanic to inspect what condition the clutch is in at present time. I am getting ready for a long road trip and I don't need extra stress on my mind. Thank you.

Brand new clutch pump with a defective bleeder valve... good thing it was a problem on a part you could get to without removing the transmission... Using the bleeder pump is the way to go.

Did you ever find the bleeder screw size? I need one too. I bought my clutch from O'Reilly Auto Parts and the screw seems to be a little smaller than a 7mm and a 6mm is too small. So after repeated bleeding the thing is getting very difficult to work with.

I am having a problem with going into gear fine then it does not want to go into 2nd gear or sometimes grind into second. Then most of the time it is ok. I changed the gear oil to redline (after watching your video) but after 200 miles it is the same. Seems strange that 2nd gear is the only problem. I can shift from 1st to 3rd ok when I have to. Just the shifter will not go into 2nd, sometimes I can shift to 1st again then slow and it goes in but not always. Any ideas or someone who has solved this? Thanks

I own a 89 wrangler yj I had a similar problem,I got my problem solved by moving the shift knob from side to side on neutral,If the gear knob does not go the same way on either side it means that one of the two spring that you got there is ruin,by replacing the damage one you would be able to get that jeep getting into gear again.. Good luck 🤞

How long does it take to bleed a slave cylinder? I was at it for 2 hours and feel like I got no where. Is there a technique I am doing wrong? I have a Pittsburgh brake bleeder kit to syphon out the air too. Thoughts? Advice?

  • @JeepSolid

It shouldn’t take that long. I’d guess air is getting in somewhere. Double check your connections and how you have bleeder set up. I even plastered grease all over the bleeder fitting to make sure air wasn’t sucking in.

@@JeepSolid I did some more research - I’m gonna try this gravity bleeding method. Where you open the valve and let it drip on its own for 10-15 minutes . I may have been pushing the clutch pedal too quick. Your video helped. It got me started. By the way I am fixing a ‘91 Islander 4.0. Keep up the good work on the videos 👍🏻

With my 1991 YJ, after couple miles driving sometimes I can’t get into any of the gears. The shifter almost like it’s blocked. It’s not letting me shift it into gear. Then randomly it starts shifting like butter. So so weird. Like I find myself trying to jam it into first or second but other times it’s shifting super normal. Do you think it’s because I need to change my transmission fluid? I heard something about red line MT-90 fluid? Just so random that it’s not going into gear sometimes. Also sometimes when I try to put it into reverse I hear terrible clicking and grinding and I feel it against my shifter knob and other times it goes straight into reverse. I’m very new to this. Any suggestions or videos I would really appreciate it. Thank you for your time and dedication. I’m excited to learn about working on my Jeep!

Definitely wouldn't hurt to change the fluid. Just make sure you use something that is safe for brass synchronizers. Like Redline MT90 or Royal Purple Synchromax. Do not use regular 75w90.
