... anyway, I totally know what you mean the actors showed this scene on point. He displays enough protectiveness to make his daughter feel loved but also has respect for her autonomy and isn’t weird or sexist about it- he ultimately wants her to go out, have fun, make her own decisions and make memories. This comes across really well and it’s genuinely sweet to watch. He isn’t a careless Dad but he has a level of actual respect for his daughter. So many Dad’s take it too far one way or another- not giving a single shit or hyper policing what she wears and who she sees like she’s a thing. It’s a refreshing take.

Alicia looks super gorgeous and so pure in that dress. There's something about her that screams beauty, class and of course naivety. It's not easy for any girl who would just walk in & assume the role that exudes all those qualities on screen at once. Yet, Alicia did it perfectly and she makes us fall in love with her & her character, Cher.

I've always loved the relationship between Josh and Mel (the dad). Mel was Josh's stepfather, now he's just Josh's ex-stepfather. By all accounts that ought be a tough relationship, except they truly bonded with each other. Mel sees that Josh wants to date his daughter and he couldn't be happier with the idea. Josh always defends Mel as being one of the few people in his corner. These two characters stole the show for me.

The dad/daughter relationship is one of the things I like best about the movie. In lots of movies at the time, parents were portrayed as clueless idiots and/or their kids were fighting with them and hating them. But Cher has a great relationship with her dad. He's still a dad (wants her to cover up a bit more, wants the guy taking her out on a date to be careful with her), but he's not clueless and they don't fight.

​@@TheYazmanian I hope not, but i have a feeling she was probably ok with it because A). this movie from 1995 when companies and famous people weren't quite as hot headed toward depictions of them in media. and B). they aren't necessarily talking negatively about the associated individual, in this case Sui. (Other than Cher's dads underwear resemblance comment, but that's the whole point of the line anyway.) it could also be that she didn't even know about the film. its unlikely, but certainly possible.

Cher is actually a very clever character - I’m pretty sure she was playing off of what her dad was saying about underwear

i just love that the Dad's character is realistic lol,not like the typical "yeah just go and hook up somewhere with your naughty boyfriend"

My dad had told me one of my mini dresses looked like underwear as well and I laughed so hard and he was so confused because this scene popped in my head.

Sheesh ... aside from "movie magic," looking at earlier shots, there wasn't any way Josh nor Dad could have seen Cher coming down the stairs. Yet, Josh is gobsmacked, (0:58) looking at her "coming down the stairs." 😂

This might be coincidental but it’s interesting how Josh comments on Cher’s dress almost like how Gaston criticizes Gigi’s dress right he before he sings the song. Again, that part may have been coincidental but the music choice itself was definitely intentional!
