Cluck old hen-Clawhammer banjo in Sawmill tuning

Музыка

Cluck old hen is early fiddle tune from the Appalachian mountains around the 1880's. And it is still is popular as an oldtime standard square dance and jam tune! Wow, that is some staying power! This is one of those oldtime tunes that sounds good fast and driving, but also can sound cool when it's slow and groovy. Thanks for watching!
The banjo is in Sawmill Tuning (also called mountain minor, mountain modal)

Lyrics and Chords
Key of A
A G
My old hen is a good old hen,
A E A
She lays eggs for the railroad men.
A G
Sometimes one, sometimes two,
A E A
That’s enough for the railroad crew.
A G
Cluck old Hen, Cluck and sing,
A E A
Ain’t laid an egg since way last spring.
A G
Cluck old hen, cluck and squall,
A E A
You ain’t laid an egg since way last fall.
______________________________________________________________________
My old hen’s got a wooden leg
Best old hen to ever lay an egg
Sometimes nine, sometimes 10
That’s enough for the railroad men
My old hen, she wouldn’t lay an egg
So I poured hot water up and down her leg
First time she cackled, she cackled in the lot
Next time she cackles she cackles in the pot

I realized I forgot how to play cluck ol' hen. Thinking to myself, "I want to play this in sawmill" went looking at how it's played and of course Hillary's got a video, and of course it's in double C. She loves the ol' sawmill. I've been playing through her songbook but didn't even think to check her channel for this one. Great book by the way. If you like her style pick it up!

For a new player trying to get my head around the basics, it was really helpful the way you slowed things right down. Thanks.

I am learning Jed Clampett and Salt Creek, so I really, really enjoyed your video. I play Scruggs style on a $300 Epiphone and I play with the Prince George Old Time Fiddlers and I am the token banjo player. I try to learn guitar and banjo closed chords at the same time. I love that old song. Thanks again. Richard
