It is honestly so refreshing to see a character like him? Just a completely likeable father that is trying to raise his kid.

A 20 year old nerd stuck on a island manages to do one thing good in his life and makes something that can literally solve all hunger problems. But because of social pressure he screws everything up and manages to make a end of the world scenario from food raining from the sky. He also kisses a girl

I love how even though the audience is meant to think that he feels this way because he's always suspicious of flint, his chest hairs aren't wrong. Flint was about to perform a series of events that would cause it to rain food, which nearly destroys the world. Earl himself just didn't know this yet, which is why he had no problem with asking Flint to make it rain ice cream.
