Hi everybody welcome to the deep dive, today I’m looking at fins. Because, they come in a thousand different styles and surely, by now it’s fairly academic which would be the best right? I mean, hundreds of thousands of divers diving every single all around the world. Why haven’t we found the most efficient fins design and just filtered out the rest?
Well, everybody is different, and every dive is different. So, we still have a wide variety of styles for a divers needs. Most divers start off with a good all-rounder design and then either specialize and have a few pairs of fins for different needs or branch out to something exotic and just stick with that. But, let's take a good look at fins and features and what they do…

Poseidon have started to distribute ForceFins after 10+ years when they ForceFins were unavailable. Used a pair just once in the past - like Marmite - you love them or hate them! They are pricey £270 now. Anyone had experience of long-term use of them - or bought a pair recently?

in about 2005 my fin was bitten by a large triggerfish - for hard plastic he left some knarly teeth marks, this is my favorite feature of my fins, i would never replace them

I used the Cressi Thor EBS for about 15 dives. Felt like I was kicking and kicking and not going anywhere. After a dive where we had some current, I decided that enough was enough and bought the Apeks RK3 insted, and I've used them for the last 11 dives. It's like day and night. I use a lot less energy and air using the RK3 fins. Wish I had known the Cressi Thor was that bad before I wasted my money on them.

I agree color doesn't do anything. But then there is the design feature. In automotive sport slapping flames on your car does make your car go faster. I think this will also transfer into diving. Paint some flames on your fins and you will go faster. Tell me what is your idea on this topic.

i got a pair of Mares Avanti quattro with 6 years of extreme use (rubber straps get broke just in march of this year, after being carried and travel those almost 7 years) its scrached, but definitely a REALLY BOMBPROOF FIN, really comfy, lot of kicking power, really maneurable ones, and 1 pair of Apex Rk3, thoose was really great to, fast ones, pretty nice tec looking, and i used a lot for cave dive at Cenotes in Mex and wrecks, in fact, after been using it i changed back for my Mares and i get into a easy wreck and i was hitting the corridor a few times (same weight but diferent lenght to the RK3), i tryed Split fins and the Seawing novas ... i felt like no power against currents, so soft piece of rubber,. nice Post! Cheers from Colombia

So glad KZread put this video in my recommended again, lost wifi and couldn't recall the channel name. This is a gem of a channel and I am super stoked I found it. Great explanation, main reason I got my ScubaPro jetfins was the insanse amount of propulsion.

i'm surprised that rubber ratched straps still exist. i had them for years and switched to bungee(inexpensive to do this) it was so difficult to get them off while trying to get on the boat.

I bought a pair Mares Avanti Quattro after a long delay because of the cost. I hated them, way too soft. I used them for one dive. Anyone want to buy a used pair like new? I have a pair of H20 Thrusters (super cheap) that I've been used for years and love them. I had to buy a used pair as backup because they stopped manufacturing them.

Tusa Solla full foot fins for day to day at the quarry I train in. Aqualung storm for traveling Managed to get by thus far without the RK3, but they’re on my list for starting cold water diving this year. Gonna need extra thermal and I can’t squeeze a boot into either of my current fins

I would guess that dry weight of a fin would affect the amount of work needed to reverse the motion of the fin from up to down or down to up in each leg stroke.

You mean inertia? Maybe, but I think the shape has much more effect because it affects the friction.

As long as you can frog kick and backfin easely in your fins everything else is just not that important, buoyancy of the fins is really dependent on the person buoyancy and dive position. If you are getting into tech diving it is something to be looking into but for recreational divers not so much.

I have two different ones I use. Aqua Glide Strap fins. OK. But the Strap keeps giving problems. Sometimes Slide off. One time the Adjuster Button popped off. Almost lost the fin. Was able to retrieve the Piece and put back together. Hurts my left foot. Between my Ankle and Big Toe. Other fin I use is a Sherwood Elite FF Pocket. Longer and Stiffer. Get better thrust. Sometimes I get Cramps using them. Found they're easier to float with.

Fin Clip. Easy on heel grips from Italy. I bought a pair a couple of years back & liked them very much. ( Put your fin on the deck, stick your foot in, & raise the front of your foot to secure the heel.) The only drawback for me was, that they were not sturdy enough for my spring clips. I got around that with some extra bolts, & they work fine for me now. Thoughts?

Best fins. all the dive masters I go diving with agree. Had them for lessons and when doing some navigation drills I would take 7 strides in the amount of time other people in the class would take 15. But we’d arrive to a spot at the same time. Saves so much energy in the long run. I usually do shore dives and love that I can just float my fins in the water with me while I get my bcd and everything set up.

I’m wearing 7mm booties most of the season. My novas fit those boots but if I go down to 5mm or less scuba pro suggests a size smaller. I want to travel to warmer water. Can I just wear my 7mm booties with a 3mm wet suit?

  • @duikmans

    @duikmans

    2 жыл бұрын

Of course. How thick your boots are has no effect on your wetsuit. The only consideration to make is weight (boots and fins) I've bought 5mm boots and lighter fins for my travel kit for this reason (you know: airlines and their baggage allowances).
