I’ve always wondered what these look like! I don’t need one, but if I were to in the future I would definitely prefer going to showings with them on the screen (as rare as they are) because my eyes cannot shift focus quickly enough from near to far distance. My eyes act like you’re manually focusing a camera for like 1.5 seconds to look far. Unfortunately it seems only bigger cities seem to have dedicated CC showings

I really need captions, I’m hard hearing and I think I might have auditory processing disorder and my dad tells me to just listen and pay attention but it’s really hard to know the whole conversation, I’m picking up words in a sentence and reading the body language to fully understand what is happening but I need captions to know what’s happening, I feel embarrassed to ask if we can ask the people that work in the theater for captions because I feel like my dad will say I’m fine, but I also go to the movies like three or two times this week and it’s fun to go but exhausting to keep reading everyone body language and trying to understand so much, it gives me a headache, but I’m 15 and I need captions so bad

I did this today and I can't say I recommend it. For starters, it's big and bulky. It does not fit in the drink holder like it's supposed to. I was struggling the whole movie trying to hold it in my hand until my hand started to go numb then balancing it on my lap until finally just resting it in my armpit. Also, it's very distracting looking from the device to the screen back in forth. Performance wise, when it's working it does capture most of the dialogue but there are still places where it didn't pick up key elements. I say "when it's working" because it stopped working completely after about an hour and a half during a two hour movie so I had to do without for the last act of the movie. Fortunately I am hard of hearing and not deaf so I could manage. Never again.

So sorry you had such a bad experience. I had trouble placing it in the cupholder at first but my partner twisted it counterclockwise and it fit pretty well after that. If you're open to try it again maybe try that to see if it works. Ultimately it's up to you.

@@rahbeeuh Thank you for the suggestion but all the same I think I'll pass. Going into this I was hoping for some sort of headset or at the very least a pair of glasses that would project the text onto for me to read while I was looking at the screen. Even without closed captioning I can usually pick up enough to get by in the theater even if I do miss a bit of dialogue here and there.

I’ve stopped going to movies. These devices are difficult for me to use because I have to look away from the screen. Also, I have vision problems in darkness so it’s hard on my eyes being small. I can’t wait for Cinamark to get open caption options. I have so many credits to use!

The reason sound system is so good at theatres is to prevent the need for subtitles taking up space on the screen and ruining animation / the watching experience because you will constantly be looking down at the captions instead of at the graphics and visuals. They should have different airings for Closed Caption services that pop up on the screen though

Check for an open caption screening when buying your tickets. I always see at least one movie per day with this option. Most new releases have this option. You're welcome
