I've seen this happen over and over with plumbing fixtures in the cellar. You really need to check down there every single day. Overflows can happen very fast, and do a lot of damage. That backup went on for some time.

It was definitely sitting like that for a while.

need to install water alarms, but most of them would trigger in heavy rains, without a backup occurring, just due to foundation/floor leakage.

@@throttlebottle5906 I owned a circa 1910 house with a cellar toilet and wash tubs. I found the best thing was quick peek down there everyday. I always caught problems in the "small puddle" stage. It didn't take much to clog the old pipes.

It makes you wonder why anybody uses a basement/cellar for anything other than storage, they seem to have so many problems, and the sewer water and slurry getting into the fabric of the building, no thank you.

every time I have seen that it's been in a basement so probably has to do with where the pipes are located.

yeah, but it makes sense and they should all be that way! if the tub backs up slightly/drains slowly, you'll possibly have a "high and dry" end. when you run the water it will rinse itself out! not much an issue now days with moveable heads and sprayer hoses(lol)
Take a bath in that and you'll never ever get sick again! It's quite literally the fountain of youth.

I like how you closed the drains and left the poop sitting right there
It's interesting to see unusual plumbing like storm water drains in the basement of a home. One of the old apartment houses that I lived in back in the '80's had them, each with separate traps. It also had a house trap in a pit. I don't think I would ever want to take a bath or shower in that tub after it held all that poopy!!! Nice work as always, Donald.

that was common practice many years ago, roof gutters(downspouts) and outdoor drains tied into the sewer lines. but that's also back when they just dumped it all into the streams rivers, channels and low lying areas or the overflow just blasts out into them. not much has changed in reality, the infrastructure of all the small to big cities is pure archaic unfriendly and dumps massive volumes of nastiness into the water ways, lakes, oceans. which then of course you end up covered in 😉 may as well be in India and using the Ganges river for everything, including body disposal......

@@throttlebottle5906 I can well imagine. The small town where I grew didn't have any kind of a sewage system (still doesn't). Many of the houses in the village (the house I grew up included) had straight pipes. In our case, it all dumped into the corner storm drain, crossed the road, and emptied over the bank on the neighboring property. The houses up the hill did the same. I can remember seeing mounds of suds in the storm drains when our neighbor was doing laundry. Finally, (almost 40 years ago) my parents were able to install a septic system with a pump station that sent the effluent uphill to the back lawn where a drain field was installed.
@throttlebottle5906
Жыл бұрын
@@lynx93tk it was also common to have a septic tank and pipe just for the toilet and sometimes the bathroom sink/shower went there too, but they and everything else usually went out a second pipe to the ditch, over a hill or wherever. it was supposed to be "gray water only" sinks, laundry, shower/tub, basement drains/sump pump.
@lynx93tk
Жыл бұрын
@@throttlebottle5906 I've seen that too. Some people took the gray water off the septic because the leach fields couldn't handle it all due to the clay soil in some spots. I think our neighbor was set up that way. One time (and this was back in the late '50's or early '60's) their septic tank overflowed and traveled all the way down their lawn (and it was quite a distance) down to ours, and it actually cut a gulley into their lawn. They had a new tank installed and took all the gray water and routed it to a drywell.
Bathtub looked like burnt pea soup. Good job as always!

It's not as easy as it sounds, the cable is stiff which makes it harder to go through the trap.

Why do you guys use that system with the "main trap"? That's something unusual for Europe where I live. We just have small traps under each sink, bathtube, shower etc. If everything is ok you never smell any sewerage, and if something clogs up it's just one trap for one thing. I lived in a single-family house for more than 20 years, now I live in an apartament block and I never experienced any backup.

It's basically to prevent an entire sewer line to get screwed. Imagine a house loves wet wipes. They jam up. That affects only that building. Now what if 20 out of 30 homes use wet wipes. And there's no boundary trap at the house. That jam will now happen in the main sewer. Times the jam with 20 houses of wipes. The entire road will be the boundary pit. How much water is backed up in one house. A few hundred to 1000 gallons. How much water is backed up for a block, hundred of thousands. It will than feedback into every home. And how long will that take to clear. All day, two days, a week? Good luck for hundreds of people unable to use anything in that block. Better to isolate one idiot VS 100.

Very questionable construction, storm water connection to the inside of this main trap. Well, as far as i see if there is any rain while the trap is blocked all that water will flood your basement right away. And you cannont do anything but waiting for the plumber or perhalps try DIY cleaning the stinky trap...
