CLIPPY Lav Mic Review

Ойын-сауық

I reviewed the FEL Communications Clippy EM172 Omni Lav-Style Mic. This mic is excellent for miking up talent when you don't mind having the mic in view (due to it's size), but it really shines as part of a stereo field recording omni rig.
This video is mostly talkie-talkie since that's the purpose of a lav mic, but I do test out a pair of Clippys on a beach.

    I’d agree whole heartedly the Clippys are fabulous. I have both the Clippys and the UsiPros and to be honest there pretty comparable but there’s just something about the Clippys that I like a teeny tad more. Also the wind protection is a tad better imho for the Clippys compared to using just Wind Bubbles on the Loms and that’s an important factor to consider for field recording. The Clippys are of course generally readily available 🤞 and that takes a great deal of stress and disappointment out of purchasing them compared to say the UsiPros. A fabulous microphone and a must have for me 👍

    These clippys do sound incredible and full. I started pursuing a film career 16 years ago, part time because of my job that pays the bills being in the way. It's time to step up my lav mics, even though I don't use them often. For me they are "plan B" for when I can't boom a mic, which is not often. However, you know how that goes; when you need it you've gotta have it. Not being able to hide them is a concern for narrative film but not for talking heads. These just sound so good, and the price is great, compared to hundreds for industry standard unobtainium mics.. Ah, you are right across the lake from me. I am near the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And no...I've never been there. It's kinda like I could go any time, so no rush.

    Yes yes. I live off the lake near Gravelly Bay and in the fictional town of Natropolis-and I broadcast from deep below Outpost 76. 😉 Yes. The hiding part is an issue with the Clippys. They’re massive as lavs go. I wanted to get my hands on a COS 11D but so far have not found a massive need for it. Then there’s the entire wireless game (which is NOT cheap). It’s so damn expensive to get into this, eh? And it’s a never ending rabbit hole of doom. Haha.

    @@TheRecordist - For affordable wireless mics look into the Saramonic Blink 500 Pro. I watched a ton of reviews on them and they sound really good with the lav they come with and would likely be even better with the clippy. Actual performance seems to be hit and miss as far as line of sight goes. Some people have had cut outs when the transmitter was on the opposite side of the person, some people have not. I got the 2 mic kit for a steal on ebay. They were selling the original Blink 500 B2 2 mic kit (at a bargain) but shipped me the Pros instead. Need I say I did not complain? Haven't had a chance to try them out yet but you would not be wasting your time looking into them. Otherwise, we are looking at $400 and more for pro Sennheiser level equipment, on the "cheap" end.

    @@northcoaststudios LectroSonics are the preferred choice among location sound pros. Those are thousands $$. They consider the Sennheiser systems “entry level”. That’s an area that I’m not going to get in to. I’ve got some pocket recorders and I can clip some Clippys on and hit record and have zero drop outs with those. I can just sync in post. But I’m not interested in doing pro work at this time. I’m just doing it for myself and small projects. The Sennheiser systems are great and probably the way I would go if I did get into wireless. I feel I may have blown it. I bought a pair of Audio-Technica ES943/O a few years ago for close to $500 dollars. They have a signal to noise ratio of 65. These Clippy’s seem to have much better specs at nowhere near the cost. I have a DIY rig where I placed the mics inside a child’s toy called an Oball. It’s a round ball with a cage like structure that has a rubbery feel. The rubber feels indestructible. Over that I put a furry windshield. I use the Wingman app to turn the recording on and off. I record a lot of city ambience and traffic so I position my car accordingly. Sometimes I put the mics on the side of the car in the windows with them rolled almost all the way up. I’m not an expert on specs but….the Clippys on paper look better in many respects than my Audio-technicas. I’m tempted to buy the Clippys but I don’t know how much of a difference in real world recordings it will make. It’s not like I can do a side by side comparison. What do you think? By the way….when you stopped talking and your voice kept going and you looked around the room puzzled…..well…….THAT was hilarious and ingenious. Another great video. Thank you very much.😅

    Hey Tom! Sorry for the late reply. This comment got lost for some reason. Anyway, I don’t have any experience with the ES943/O mics but I quickly looked them up. They seem decent but they have a frequency range from 30Hz to 20kHz. Not sure if you care about the sub bass. I will say this: do you like the sound of the recordings you’ve made? Because at the end of the day, that’s what matters. If you don’t like the sound and you want better, then the Clippy mics are a great choice. I have several stereo ambience field recording mics and I always go back to the Clippys for the ambience recordings. I do love them. But if you like what you have, then there’s no need to buy more-unless you want to collect and have options. If you dislike the AT mics, then by all means, the Clippy mics will be a great choice. And I’m glad you had a laugh! I don’t know where I come up with these ideas. Haha. Cheers!

    @@TheRecordist My AT mics are ok and do sound nice when I record city ambience as I often do…..but…….I do believe the self noise is a distraction when recording in more quiet situations such as some nature locations. The clean open sound from what I have heard from the Clippy 272 mics is very appealing. The price is also extremely reasonable. I have some handheld units to record certain situations. Zoom H6 for live music in clubs. I have gotten some terrific results with the onboard mics if my location and placement of the unit is optimal. I also use my Sony PCM-D100 for soundscapes. But the MixPre3ii with 32 bit completely spoiled me. So I find myself using that most of the time. That and the Clippys might just be the ultimate little kit for me. One question on the Clippy 272’s. Is there any problem with them overloading with loud sounds?

  • @TheRecordist

    @TheRecordist

    Жыл бұрын

    @@TomKaszuba I understand. Well, the Clippys have a max SPL of 120dBA-which is about the loudness of a gunshot. They’re very sensitive to quiet sounds but the self noise is only 14dBA. So, excellent for city scapes and also quiet ambiences. The Sony D100 is a beast. Arguably the very best pocket recorder ever made. But it’s only 24bits. So I see your issue. Still, I’d kill for a D100. They’re hard to find and very expensive. If noise is an issue then the Clippys will serve you well! Be sure to get the XLR ones though-since you’re using a MixPre. Might as well get the best!

I purchased it from an individual in China who sold items not related to audio gear. For some reason he had one in mint condition so I assume he didn’t know the current value. I crossed my fingers and waited an eternity but when it was delivered it was as described. I would equate that thing to what a Leica is to cameras. It’s a perfectly crafted engineering marvel. I have absolutely no idea why Sony would discontinue such a gem. By the way…..that Oball toy I’m using to keep air away from lav mics and then I surround that with a furry windscreen works great. It’s DIY but worth a look. They come in different sizes. I actually took a baby rattle and tore it apart using each end. Mounted the mic inside and then the furry on top. Great video, thank you! 👍🏻. I have a question that I hope you will answer. On my KZread channel, sometimes I'll put videos of running with a gimbal, I started making some videos on a Google pixel 4xl which were okay and then I upgraded my phone to a Google 6 pro and I think the video and the stereo my recording is pretty top notch. I'm really impressed. I'm curious if the clippy stereo microphones that you were showing would sound better than the Google pixel 6 pro microphones. I would like to buy them and hook them up but it would be a little bit of a hassle because I would have to somehow mount a bar on the gimbal and then put the two clippy microphones on each end of the bar which wouldn't be too bad and then get some kind of converter to go from the 3.5 mm jack into the type c usb port on the phone. But I wouldn't mind doing it if the sound is like way better. I just don't know how much better it would be If you get a chance Could you go to my chan and check out one of the newest running videos. Maybe the one about highland Park in Dallas, Texas or the recent Weston 5K race and listen to the sound and let me know your opinion if it would be worth getting the clippies, thank you so much! Hope you have a great day!.

  • @TheRecordist

    @TheRecordist

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey John! I went to your page and checked out the Highland Park, Texas one. Cool concept! Here is my take: I hear a lot of artifacts and digital compression. This is most likely not caused by the Google 6 Pro mics, but rather the video compression your phone is doing. Either it’s your phone or the final render compression (I’m not sure if you’re just recording and then going straight to KZread or if you’re editing at all and then uploading). Even KZread itself may be squashing it. The artifacts sound very much like a low quality MP3, which tells me your phone is compressing to save space-which makes sense since you’ve got over an hour of 4K 60FPS footage there. Haha. That would be one whopping file to upload. The short answer is yes, the Clippy EM-272 mics will most definitely be far superior to the Google mics, but perhaps not worth it since your phone is compressing so much. Also, your phone would be also handling the analog to digital conversion (A/D), and that’s always going to be low quality. It’s a phone. If you went with the Clippy mics, I’d also recommend you invested in a separate recorder to handle the conversion and keep it wav file and then add it to the video and syncing using snapping your fingers or something. In my opinion, I don’t think it’s all worth it. But you ARE also getting a lot of wind noise. I wonder if there’s some furries you can get for your phone to help quell that wind? I have no idea. Also, I’ve found that shooting that high of res and frame rate almost forces your phone to downgrade since the resulting file would be massive. You’d probably be better served shooting 1080p and then upscaling to 4K before uploading, than to shoot that high and upload. Just my opinion. I bet your phone gets really hot shooting that high. Haha. For example. My videos are 4K but I didn’t shoot them in 4K. I shot them 1080 and then edited them in a 4K timeline and then rendered them out in 4K. The result is almost undetectable. This saves an insane amount of space and forces KZread to increase the quality of their own crappy compression processes. The result is a crisp picture and great sound. I hope any of this has helped you in some way! Let me know if you have any other questions. I love this stuff and can talk about it all day! Cheers!

    @@TheRecordist awesome reply, thank you so much! 👍🏻. You're dead on about the 4K60 frames, the pixel 6 pro handles it pretty nicely which is amazing because the pixel 4 XL would overheat and barely do 4K at 30 frames?. You're also totally right about the file size. I think it was 60 gigs, it took a while to upload to KZread and then after KZread did its super compression. Compression I think it was 16 gigs because I used this utility that shows the size of it after it's been processed by Google so they really crunch it down. You're also totally right about the wind noise, what I used to do was use a program called open camera and that would allow you to record in mono which would just use the bottom microphone on the phone and then I could just put a hair roller a foam hair roller on that microphone and wouldn't have any problems. Problems but for some reason when you try to record with the little bitty hole at the top which is a little microphone then it gets the wind noise pretty bad. But the work around is like you said dead cats. One on the top of the phone just wrapped around the top and then one wrapped around the bottom and it almost cuts out all the noise or all the wind noise. Now that you mention it, I'll remember listening to the video right off the phone. And I don't remember hearing that pixelated sound that you were talking about like the mp3 how it gets compressed. It sounded pretty crisp, it may be KZread compressing it into oblivion. Let me do some more tests and I'll let you know. But maybe it is the phone that's doing the compression on the audio because your videos sound great and KZread compresses them too, unless like you said, it was such a big 60 gig file that KZread tried to really compress it. I'll have to do some more testing on this and let you know. I'm really curious about this. When you were talking on your video with the clippies, it sounded amazing. Really it sounded so professional. I'd almost like to get some clippies just to hook them up to like you said a external recording device just to do testing with it'd be interesting. I'm going to do like you said and do a test video with 1080p 60 frames and then upscale it with the editing software and see how it looks. That would be very interesting and like you said, it would probably be a higher quality video in the long run, I'll let you know how it turns out. Great video that you made about the clippies. You crack me up in some parts of your video, the one part where you're still talking, but then you're looking around. It's hilarious. Please disregard any grammatical errors. I'm using Google speech to text.

    @@JohnDaniels haha. Well thanks! Yes. Do some tests and see what you find. There’s something else that’s a drawback about the Clippys: you’re running. You’ll need some super duper shock mounts for those mics. They pick up everything. But those Clippys are amazing for ambience. I can’t think of better omni mics for that purpose. So rich and full and lush. So yes, do let me know how it all works out for you! Cheers!

    Hi there, I really like your video, excellent information there. Do you know if it would make sense to plug 2x clippies to some action camera and record a sound of hiking? Or maybe I should invest in some zoom device and record audio separately? Thanks in advice.

    Hey thanks! Well, to answer your question, all cameras (including expensive ones) generally have really terrible preamps and A/D converters. If you’re after quality, then a Zoom F3 would be your best bet. But that’s not to say you can’t record into an action camera. It WILL work, as long as the camera has a stereo 3.5mm input with plug-in-power. Hope this helps!

    Is it a sin to say I like the Pluggy by leaps and bounds? Can you help me understand the use differences? The pluggy is just so smooth and crisp simultaneously. It sounds more like what I expect to hear from a recording - of any kind really. It sounds as if they took all the prep work out of the way and I hate prep work having learned that about myself while being a prep cook for a very busy kitchen

    Great review and video. I'm interested as to why you say you couldn't record music with a Clippy. I appreciate that that is not what they are designed for, but using a small diaphragm omni 'pencil mic' is common practice... so why would it be so different with a lavalier mic? I'm asking partly because I've been looking for a lavalier mic as an option for close-mic'ing acoustic guitar (together with a regular mic) for minimising bleed and maximising isolation. I don't see why using a Clippy would be so different from using, say, a Little Blondie or a Red12 for instance?

    Hey thanks! Ok, I think it could be done without issue if the source was quiet. The Clippys are very sensitive but that also makes them delicate to loud sounds. It has a much lower sound pressure level than other omnis because is designed to pick up intricate and delicate sounds. You could always do a test and see how it works!

    Great Video! Try and invert polarity of your recorded audio, then listen to how this amazing little primo capsule sounds I'm using 272. Adds warmth and timbre. I bet the true origin of that measuring tape actually shall never be reviled for the sake of us all. Once it does, all our mics will never sound the same, No matter the polarity.

    Great video from a great channel!!! I am in a pickle here… I am using a Sony ECM-77B with a Zoom F3. It sounds great to me compared to my previous Amazon £15 Lav mic. However this lav is connected to a power unit which is huge. I am wondering to switch to the Clippy lav. The question is that the £500 Sony compared to the Clippy is it a much better option? Even I’ve purchased it for £50 instead of full price. Thank you.

    Thanks for the great compliment! Hmm. The 77B is a great mic. Not great for anything other than dialogue, but for dialogue it’s a fantastic mic. I do know that it has a giant battery/connector pack on it which can be quite cumbersome in use. If that’s the issue, the Clippy will be much easier. However, the Clippy is a massive lav. There’s no hiding it. I’m talking about the microphone part. Not the connector. In the end it’s your call. Options are great if you can swing the cost, but I’m not sure how much better the Clippys would be than the 77B for dialogue. I hope this helps!

    Does the Zoom H1 put out enough voltage to power a Clippy EM272Z1 Stereo Mic set?

    If the Clippys require plug-in-power then yes it does. I believe the EM272z1 is just the model name for the stereo pair. If this is so, then yes. It’ll do exactly what you want.

    If you are willing, I have a clippy but wish to purchase another for stereo field work. Would you recommend buying a matched stereo set to ensure compatibility or is it feasible to roll the dice and buy another clippy and hope they work fine together? In essence, how important is the stereo match aspect of these mics versus simply buying another and saving money? Thanks.

    I have several Clippy mics that I bought months apart from each other, and they’re pretty similar. That said, there may be slight differences between them. The best thing to do is to email Nick over at FEL Communications and ask him that. He makes them and would know better than I would. Hope that helps a little!

    I see on the suppliers website that Clippy mikes are very sensitive to RF induced noise and can be a problem if attempting to use indoors. Do you have any experience of this or can anyone comment? Is there a way to minimise interference or is there a screening technique that might help?

    I have used Clippys for a number of years and I have never experienced RF issues. I’ve even used Bluetooth to control my recorder right beside it, along with using my cell phone beside it. I’ve used them indoors and outdoors. Never an issue. Perhaps because the mic housing is metal? I’m not sure. But I haven’t experience this issue. But I don’t want to say that there AREN’T any issues, just in case you have them. But I have not and I’ve not heard of anyone who has. Sorry I couldn’t be more help.

    Hey Andreas. The Clippy mics are pretty flat just like the CM4 mics. But the Clippys are omni and the CM4s are cardioid. So, much more directional. Omni mics are much better for full atmosphere recording as there is no pointing required. The cardioids are better for tighter sounds where you want some clear separation. I enjoy omni mics when I want to record a forest or a large, open environment. But for indoors and smaller, more specific sources, I’ll go cardioids. Hope this helps!

    @@TheRecordist Does the frequency response extend as much in the low end on the clippy as in CM4/Omni1? Speaking about directional, does it work to make sort of like a mini dog muzzle cone over the mic to shield away sound from undesired directions if needed?

  • @TheRecordist

    @TheRecordist

    Жыл бұрын

    @@JahaJaho hey. Yes and no. The Clippy is omni and as such, isn’t effected with the proximity effect. So while it does pick up low frequencies, it’s even from all directions, where as cardioids will get bassier the closer you get to it. The cardioid pickup pattern has a sort of beam that if what you’re recording is in it, then the sounds are full and articulate. If you’re outside it, the articulation becomes darker and quieter. Not completely gone. But noticeably lower and thinner.

  • @TheRecordist

    @TheRecordist

    @@JahaJaho hey. Sorry. No. The Omni mics will pick up everything everywhere. This is why sometimes when you see lav mics on celebrity interviews, they’re upside down. That’s because omni mics will pick up audio the same amount from behind it as it will in front of it. You don’t need to point omni mics. They evenly pick up everything. As far as the F1, it’s not a great recorder. I didn’t include the F1 in my count of bad F-series recorders because it’s not an XLR recorder. It’s a 3.5mm one. And the noise is higher than it should be. Also there’s all kinds of issues with the clip and the battery door. That said, it’ll record but won’t be as quiet as an XLR input recorder. And you have to be very gentle with it because they’re known to easily break. Also, normalizing isn’t always the best thing to do with field recording. The natural dynamics should be preserved. If the sounds are very quiet and never ever spike, then raising the gain at the time of recording is preferred, and maybe raising the gain in post can be used - but not normalizing, since this will sometimes amp up the signal far too much for a quiet recording.
