This is the second in a small series of portraits I'm doing of my characters! I hope this process walkthrough helps some of you to understand how I approach lighting/shadows, and why it's super fast and easy to do it this way rather than a more 'traditional' approach.

wonderful video. thank you for all the explanations! i love seeing more people use clip studio. i'm just really happy with the program. i switched a few years ago after photoshop started to need more and more resources and managed to make my huge gaming pc (not even a laptop!) lag. ridiculous. so anyway :) thank you so much!!

Hey! Was just wondering what brush you used? The one that seems to be written in Chinese, that was used broadly throughout the sketching and shading stages.

Yo no cap, I would watch a whole ass anime about this character. This is literally art and a story in one, like his expression, his _EYES_ and even the clothes, makes me want to know who he is and what world or time he is from.

if you're really disliking a drawing, just move on to a new one! since you've already recognized the mistakes you made the first time around, you can avoid them afterwards. as for hair, try to think of it as sections instead of individual strands! ;D

Another way to get a fresh look quickly is to just flip the image horizontally once in a while. Stepping away is definitely a more thorough way of refreshing the mind though.

I've been dragging my feet on rendering a piece because I just couldn't decide how I wanted to do it, this gives me some new things to try!
This is beautiful, your art and videos have been inspiring me to take my art journey more seriously and to do more studies and the like to grow in my art as much as possible. Thank you 😊

thank you for the comment!
Such a lovely piece! Your voice is so soothing as well! Loved to see the process! ♥
I've always struggled with deciding between attempting a painterly style or keep inking, since it's my favourite part of the process, but now I realise I can do both! Thank you so much, I'll be trying this later!
Aa I love this so much, my art style/process is kind of similar to yours but I can never spend enough time on my drawings, so your quick tips seem to be really helpful 💓 Thank you for this video, the drawing is ✨ stunning ✨
I just LOVE your shading style! I would personally love to see more full illustrated videos with voice over, but vlogs sounds awesome aswell ❤️
hot damn, the way the art went from just the flats to having so much depth is genuinely mind boggling. definitely going to try out this method in my own art!
You gave so much invaluable advice while drawing and using references, I can't thank you enough. I get stressed out whenever the coloring goes the wrong way and your outlook on things helped me realize that I need to loosen up A LOT and not try to copy what other artists do that just doesn't match with my style (aka lasso tool painting 😥)
As somebody who is incredibly new to drawing and digital art, this is incredibly helpful. This makes my drawings seriously pop so much more than what i had ever hoped. incredible. I had to watch this video again and again and again and again. I always go back to it to make sure im shading it similar to the way you do. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this. My art has been in a complete slump when it comes to colouring and shading and this has been such a huge help to push it forward. Thank you again
this is so stunning. beautiful.
Watching your full process’ is always so soothing to me and I can’t explain why, I love this piece so much
Thank you so much for making this video! I have a pretty lineart heavy style and could never get my head around how to make the shading more interesting and painterly like! Completely blew my mind and will definitely try it out! Thank you again!
Gorgeous❤ I love his name and the dramatic lighting so cool!!!
This looks just perfect omg!!
Your art style is AMAZING. I love this character, I love how you sketch and how you render it! I feel like I've learned a ton from this video. I love how you were able to add so much definition and detail. I can only hope to be able to do anything so amazing with my own art.

Absolutely stunning results 😍
What a mesmerizing portrait. It's going to suck you into thinking about the character's thoughts, background and circumstances.
HES SO FUNKY I LOVE HIM!!
I really enjoyed watching this, even as someone who doesn't draw digitally. You explained stuff and the way you mentioned the colours and exact opacities and stuff it felt clear enough to try emulating even for someone with no idea what they're doing!
Omg! I love to watch your process. You're a huuuuge inspiration! You can achieve this kind of rendering that is believable, detailed and still simplified . I wish to get to this point one day with my stuff :3 Thank you for showing us your art
I've been struggling with keeping my characters consistent and manageable in a painterly style. So I started using your line art tips, and it's really been helping me get things done in a timely manner. Thanks for the vid!
The way you render... so magical. Feels like you're almost sculpting

Ahh your characters are so gorgeous! I’d love to see vlogs from you!
i’ve been having trouble with my digital painting process since im pretty new at it. this video gave me so much insights thank you!
Wow this actually helped me so much! I was having so much trouble drawing on “one layer” for a more painted look, but it was taking so long because I didn’t have defined lineart or even a clean sketch to work off of. I just kept redrawing and fixing any mistake was a nightmare. My shadows and lighting was a mess, too. Thank you!
that was incredible~ It helped me a lot! I've been struggeling sooooo much with all the different steps of colouring. To get a good variation and harmony of contrast, colour, shadow, light etc etc etc etc etc!
Nice video ! Gonna train now !! Thanks so much for showing us your process !

This is one of the prettiest character portraits I’ve ever seen. His eyes pierce right into the soul!
Your art style is wonderful, it's so pleasing to watch!
Wooow the grainy details on the hair is so beautiful
this was so helpful for me because the process of painting digitally does not compute in my brain, so seeing it be done in steps like this makes it seem possible. also watching how you do it made me appreciate the end piece even more, so cool to see it come to life
Omg I'm so thankful for this video ♥️ I can't figure out how I want to shade my drawings, so I'm trying new things and this is helpful. I love your style and I really wanna try this shading technique, because it looks incredible ♥️
i´m stucked with an illustration and watch you´re prosses really helps me to overcome that artblock and figure it out what step doing next in my own work.

Omg this is beautiful, I love you coloring and art style!
Love the character design! And the tutorial too!
this was legit the most helpful video i ever watched. thank you sm!
Thank you! I got my graphic tab last year, but because I was busy I didn't have enough time to fool around with it. Learned a lot!
This has helped me so much. I'm always extremely intimidated by lineless pieces and I just prefer to have them anyways so I'm really happy I'm not the only one. And this is incredible and makes me want to take some real time and paint something instead of just cel shading it. Thanks so much for this video and your work is incredible!!❤
This video is a godsend. I have a very line heavy style, inking has always been my favorite stage. And while I've dabbled into painting linelessly more as of late, I always find that I'm missing some of the essence of what makes my art recognizable. I'm thinking of borrowing some of your process and see if that works better with how I naturally like to paint. It sounds like it should !
Omg you’re so good omg it’s fantastic
Thank you so much for this. I found it very useful!💖💖
I could watch you draw all day 😍
Thankyou for sharing, I've been watching many tutorial and all your explanation hit the spot!
look thank you so much for this video. all the time ive been wanting to do a drawing that has paint-like quality like this but i thought you actually have to paint it and i never considered lineart at all god thank you so much im so inspires now :]
Your art is just mind blowing 👌🏽😊
So mysterious yet beautiful (ik if it is correct I mean it's pretty and mysterious at the same time ) the shadows are so interesting, love the dude tho such a good looking even with his "messy" hair XD thanks for the inspiration !❣
Wow, this video is so eye opening and informative, thank you! I also love your art style!
This girl is the bomb! ❤ love the channel so much
I found this really helpful, thanks a lot! Lovely drawing :)
Hi, Yana! Thank you so much for this video! I loved your explanations and how clearly you share knowledge. You're a star! To be honest, I've been struggling a lot with my lines (I used to paint directly over my sketches) and I really recognized myself in what you said about a character losing part of their facial features, so I'll definitely try inking + your approach to shadows in my next piece. I learned a lot from your video, thank you so much for making it! ♥♥♥
