Every time I see George lying like this, locked fast to the mountain he set out to conquer, my heart contracts. And Conrad's face when he admits to that fleeting desire to "keep walking" is full of pain. Yet, all who subsequently visited George in his place there treated him with the very greatest respect. Couldn't ask for more. My belief, for what it's worth, is that he did summit. I like to believe so. Andrew still waits... Rest in Peace.

They showed him respect indeed. Before the searchers departed they actually buried him and read psalms over his grave.

they did not show him any respect!!! they looted and mutilated his body, peeled him off the ground, stepped on him with crampons and hacked away at him! then they buried him, read the psalms and blah blah blah... only to return two weeks later to dig him up again looking for more loot, they they partially buried him and left...

What a emotional moment to find Mallory!!!---Mallory said that he would leave his wifes photo on the top of Everest if he made it--they never found the photo on his body but they found letters but not the photo!!!

He probably held it when he was dying. Then obviously would have disintegrated. Lol jk I think he made it honestly and he did indeed leave it at the top.

Look George never told his wife he would leave her picture at the top. That only came around when they found George and the only one who said that he promised was his daughter. So it's not a fact. This documentary has many many untrue sstatements Also if you go and actually read George Mallory states that he knows he can't take the ridge route to get to the summit. He knew about the second step being impossible at that alltude. Why do you think Norton went through the gully. George bypass the first and second step. Go read

when the body was found, mallory`s daughter was told that they did not find a picture of her mother but that they did find a letter from her mother on mallory`s body. this is when she said that mallory was supposed to leave both a picture and a letter from his wife on the summit, it was later discovered that the letter they first thought was from mallory`s wife was actually from a family friend! so mallory did not have a picture of his wife and he did not have a letter from his wife! he had several other letters on him thought...

Conrad, what I find very curious is how did his left boot come off his foot? We have to pull our boots off to remove, and his toe is to the ground. I just don't see how the wind could have done that?? It seems to me some other mountaineer came across his body some time ago and took it as a souvenir. Any thoughts???

  • @Bella.216

His left boot is there. Part of it anyway, it's off his foot due to it rotting away due to it being frozen and thawed over the year's. That's why his socks were black on the bottom. They have a display of what was found on George Mallory. Did you watch the documentary on the actual footage when they found him in 99?. The rotting boot is at the royal geological society with his other boot.

It's gruesome to imagine but feet can become detached after death bc our feet are connected to our body through tendons and ligaments, as opposed to a leg or shoulder which is bone locked in a socket.

Great video makes many things clear thanks, no doubt many others have had the same thought, what it at the summit Mallory takes a picture of Irvine, hands over the camera, Irvine takes a picture of Mallory and then puts it in HIS pocket?

  • @ralphbooger4756

it is questionable if they ever had that camera at all... mallory was to bring summit rocks as proof of summit, but the grave robbers that found and mutilated his body never knew to look for summit rocks, they were only after the loot. they even went back two weeks later and dug him up again to see if they missed some loot, the partially buried him and left.

Mallory had taken pics on an earlier expedition on the mountain and did such a bad job no one trusted him with a camera. There was one climber(Mallory) and one engineer(Irvine) on the final summit push. Irvine was chosen bc he had experience fixing the o2 system, and he also was known to have a camera. Common sense says Mallory would have delegated taking pictures to Irvine

I think it's a feeling of guilt perhaps...regret that what he started went super-commercialized. He now knew naked pictures of his body would be seen by the entire world. Might be quite awkward to explain to your "hero" in the afterlife - "So I, uh...led an expedition to find your body and uh...the entire world has seen your mortal remains undignified." George: "You mean like, I died with a funny look on my face? My mummy must be marvelous!" Conrad: "No, like, um...we filmed you with your pants down and showed the world how crows had eaten your ass cheeks." George: " How the ***** are you in Heaven?"

Not to be the negative one on this but why in the world did they not check for summit rocks in his pockets before chipping him away from the mountainside. Everyone is so damn focused on a camera they might not even have had they forget they went there on a geological mission to collect rocks from the summit (rock that are very unique to the summit). If he had them in his pockets then you got your answer if he summitted or not. Wish they would have taken things a bit slower and perhaps thought it through a bit more. This mystery might have been solved already with just a little more thought given to the reason they were there to begin with. Also, back then no one really thought you had to have a photo to prove you climb it... that notion of proof came much later.
