Clint and Lee Marvin were perfect for their roles. Hard drinking, worn and haggard, free spirit Ben Rumson, and handsome, young buck Pardner singing his heart out. And doing it well. And he did a nice job singing in his early 80s movie "Honkytonk Man" as well which he directed. Check it out. I'm sure it's on KZread.

This has been a favorite movie of mine since this film came out. It was a big part of my childhood. I was lucky enough to meet Clint more than once and the only thing I asked him about his long and distinguished career was about this film (he was amused and bought me a drink and called my friend). I knew he sang in this film but I had to confirm it because I have so many friends who doubted me. He's a great guy and I have the utmost respect for him. They are a nice family. In 1971 I was working in Lae, New Guinea and Paint Your Wagon was playing at the local cinema one week. Our friends had the concession shop at the cinema and we dropped in one evening to say hello. Pam, who was running the shop that evening loved Paint Your Wagon and when she heard Clint Eastwood start singing this song she dropped everything and ran into the theatre to watch and listen, leaving my wife and me to run the shop for a few minutes - something we had never done before, but we picked it up very quickly! When Pam came back we gave her a hard time about abandoning us. Harve Presnall was the only trained singer in the cast, which showed, but everyone gave it everything they had and the result was a wonderful, rollicking show.

back at the time this was made, actors/actresses were under contracts with studios to make so many movies, like a package deal of 3 or 5. it didn't matter if they had the skill set to fit the movie, if they were told to do the movie, that was it. that is the reason that lee marvin and clint eastwood were in this musical is because the studio cast them in it. i remember my father telling me this years ago specifically about this movie, although it happened in other genres also. he was a musical buff, so i grew up watching musicals all the time. "paint your wagon" was always one of my favorites even though it was lesser known. i love lee marvin singing "wanderin" star".

Little trivia. It was during this movie that Clint developed his interest in flying. He had to be helicoptered to the filming location daily and during the flight Clint's natural curiosity had him asking questions and getting impromptu flying lessons from the pilot .. who after a while even let Clint take the controls for short periods. * It left a lasting impression on Clint who ended up taking helicopter lessons and got his license .. later buying a helicopter from a French company that Clint kept stored at the Carmel airport. He used this for getting to and from LA and on other business trips. Even flew Francis Fischer an hour to a hospital when she unexpectedly went into labor while they were at the Bind Crosby ranch in northern California (that Clint had purchased).

I talk to the trees But they don't listen to me I talk to the stars But they never hear me The breeze hasn't time To stop and hear what I say I talk to them all in vain But suddenly my words Reach someone else's ear At someone else's heart strings too I tell you my dreams And while you're listening to me I suddenly see them come true I can see us some April night Looking out across a rollin' farm Having supper in the candlelight Walking later, arm in arm Then I'll tell you how I pass the day Thinking mainly how the night would be Then I'll try to find the words to say All the things you mean to me I tell you my dreams And while you're listening to me I suddenly see them come true

Clint released some records when he was on TV's RAWHIDE. He would later show off his singing skills, here, in 1969, in PAINT YOUR WAGON. He's not a great singer, but he gets by. He's better than some who I have heard. I like this film, even though it is not the greatest film. I first saw it at age 5, in 1969, when it was a new movie. It's loaded with character actors, who I love. We had the soundtrack LP, at our house, when I was a kid.

Very brave to do this song without "stunt doubles". But both Eastwod and MArvin pulled this off quite well. Better this way than with lip sync. But I recon they made a wise choice when they decided not to go for muscial career. Thanks for posting!
