I love that your office area at the end was a patient room years ago based on the wall items. I am a health IT (PACS) guy now and what got me into this field was being born with a congenital heart defect. I want you to know that no matter what your future holds, you are the glue that makes sure people like me live happy and healthy lives. Your input is so important in-patient care!

great job ! thx for making a daily life of clinical pharmacist ! My GF was a clinical pharmacist, in cardiology like you LOLLL. She is currently a medical student, but, from time to time, she works as a part-time clinical pharmacist too.

this vlog was really cute. i’ve been looking for pharmacy vlogs just so i can understand what being a pharmacist actually is and this was helpful thank you! just one question (hope this doesn’t sound too dumb) what does doing rounds mean? :)

It means we go around the unit and discuss each patient case and come up with a plan. At most teaching institutions, medical residents would present the case and then nursing and pharmacists add their commentary and then medical team decides on plan. :-)

Interesting, nicely presented 👍. Of course, if you have a curious mind and you're constantly hungry for learning one job won't be enough :-)

Hello! I am new to your channel but I have loved this video! thank you for sharing your thoughts and allowing me to realize that linearity is not the only option. I would like to pursue pharmacy, but I am afraid I will not be able to do well as my chemistry is slightly weak. I took a pharmacology course for my BSc last sem, and I really enjoyed it. Would you say that pharmacy is very organic chemistry/ chemistry based? my BSc has a focus in biology/ biomedical field. thank you for your time, and I hope to see more videos like these! Take care!

Hi! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Pharmacy school does use quite a few chemistry basics and I think understanding the concepts are helpful in your career, but I also think the way college chemistry is sometimes taught isn’t the same as practical knowledge/ not a true indicator of whether you’ll be able to apply these concepts in real world. We do still think about half life, lipophilicity, kinetics etc. but it’s only one slice of the pie. There are people skills, abstract problem solving, writing skills, time management/life skills etc that contribute to overall success. Chemistry grades probably affect pharmacy school admissions, but I can say no one at this point in my career would care if I did well in chemistry 😂

Some pharmacy specialties do inpatient, eg transplant. Otherwise pharmacists in med management clinics do most of this work.

Hello, thank you for making this video! It was very informative. Im really interested in becoming a pharmacist and working in a hospital. I have a few questions if you don't mind: Are you a Pharm D. and are you referred to as doctor? Is your residency in one specific area of the hospital? Are there NICU pharmacist?

Hi Asia! Yes I'm a Pharm.D. and sometimes I'm referred to as Dr. Patel but I much much much prefer Lydia :-) My residency was an acute care PGY-1. Typically PGY-2 year (which I didn't do) is the specialty, e.g. cardiology or critical care or transplant, etc. And yes there are NICU pharmacists trained in pediatrics. How far along are you in training? Hope this was helpful.

The school I'm going to has a PharmD program so hopefully I will transfer into that. I just got a job as a Pharmacy Technician to gain experience. I really think I would love working in the NICU! Not sure- if you are looking to practice in the US, you would need a Doctorate (there is no bachelor or masters program)

Great video! Hello Dr. Lydia! I have a question. I can’t trust google. I was wondering if it is safe to take Famotidine and Lexapro? I take the Lexapro at night 5mg. I take 20 mg Famo. 2x morning and night. Just started the Lex yesterday. I have been taking the Famo for years. Thoughts?

Nothing jumps to mind for interactions but definitely check with your care provider on the dosing and duration/plan to titrate dosing etc!

The classic route is doctor of pharmacy and then residency training for 2 years. PharmD programs typically require 2-4 years of undergraduate education

Hi there! Look up requirements for international graduates by state. I did my doctorate degree in the US so I’m not familiar with that process, but usually there are a couple tests and some hours to fulfill. Best of luck!!

I did not do a PhD and I would say this is not common for most clinical pharmacists. Most of us would do 1-2 years of residency in the US.

Hey! Thank you. It really depends on what your personal goals are. If you think the career is something you would enjoy and the timeframe (tuition) is acceptable, I would suggest looking into a few more resources to make that decision. What are the reasons people around you don’t recommend, may I ask? I did a residency in preparation for applying for a clinical pharmacist role. I think these days it’s so common to have a residency that I would view it as a requirement for most hospital jobs.

@@happy-rv2pb probably depends on the location and specialty- some are still handing out bonuses. The doctorate program is so long it’s hard to predict what it’ll be like when you’re done, so I’d say decide based on your skills and interests.

Absolutely, I do recommend you to pursue pharmacy. However, if you want to be a pharmacist working in the hospital. Then pursue Clinical pharmacy (Pharm.D) program rather than pharmacy (B.pharm) program.
