Climber's Gear Falls Out on Crux of Intense E9
Спорт
Anna Hazelnutt climbs Once Upon a Time in the Southwest E9 6c (5.13a/b R), a steep and crimpy slabby at Dyers Lookout.
This is Anna Hazelnutt's first lead of anything above 5.9 in standard...so a big undertaking.
The bottom half is a crimpy slab with little rests. The crux is a step left at half height, and the remaining top section steepens up. The holds get more positive but the previous 30-40m of the route start to take its toll.
Anna will be releasing a full video of the process of the climb on her channel. so head over to her channel, subscribe and don't miss out. You can find her here - / @annahazelnutt

Please make more content like this. Love seeing gnarly climbers pushing themselves to the emotional and physical frontier of their abilities. Outdoor content really has something special about it.

@Taylor Taylor Just checked it out. I forget how much endurance he has with all the bouldering content he comes out with. So strong.
The emotional release at the end is what’s really impressive. It tells you that the entire time she was climbing, she was exercising incredible self control to remain focused and disciplined. The music was also a perfect complement to the video.
I misread the title as "climber falls from crux..." and was anxiously expecting a massive whipper for 11 minutes. Enjoyed the surprise happy ending though!

11 minutes of uninterrupted high class climbing, can’t find this anywhere else. Great content guys!
What a legend! Nice seeing the emotion at the end! Way to go Anna!!
I don't think I've ever seen a more captivating climber/scenery/videography in my life! Anna showed great composure throughout and I loved that you showed her emotional release at the end. Great job boyz and especially Anna.
The presence of mind to not get gripped when the gear pops is just mind blowing. Rock-solid mindset. Sick send!!
When the gear popped out while she was placing another stopper! I'm so glad neither Tom nor Pete said anything :)

Well, thats more or less the first rule of trad climbing for belayers or viewers. Dont you dare mentioning stuff like, well this pro doesnt look good etc pp or be careful your pro popped... you as a climber are well aware of it you dont need some one else to remind you about it.
Amazing. Never near this grade but I have to say the balance, thin crimps and range of motion of hard slab is a beauty to watch. How I wish I could do that. Always loved slab. And Anna Hazelnutt - what a bloody super name for a trad climber !
Her reaction after sending that was classic. That feeling of complete release when you finish a route. Bravo.
What a legend! Anna is usually so goofy in these videos, it's so tense to see her being that serious.
Because the next logical grade to do after 5.9 is 5.13a/b R. Anna, you absolute madwoman!

Someone help me understand this - how in the world does this happen? What happened to all the grades in the middle? How do you find yourself in this situation?

@@randall2787 Probably a combination of factors. Anna has talked before about her fear with leading which would have undoubtedly been holding her back a bit mentally before now. And she's also got two seasoned trad climbers with her that will have undoubtedly helped to understand the route and gear placements. Anna's mad strong, and it's great to see her finish this off :)
Holy shit I've never been so tense watching a climbing video! My palms are dripping. Great send Anna!!

I have the same reaction after climbing an easy route that is well protected 😁 Sick send!

Same, haha. The mental element of trusting your life to your own great placement is so real.
So to clarify this climber is like top of her league. She probably knew that stopper was likely to pull out and kept it cool when it did. Stone cold badass.

Anna has been on a tear this year good for her!
After that topout I would've cried too. Scary! Good job Anna!
Absolute badass. I love the style of the route and her technique.
I watched this 2 years ago and was so impressed. It just popped up again. Anna has improved and matured so much since then, i really enjoy her videos and she has a wicked sense of humour 😊
I love how devoted she is to pushing her own limits. Getting past that internal fear and resistance and sending amazing things like this.
What a climb, what a setting, what a climber, what a video! Absolutely gripping. Incredible stuff Anna, I wish I had nerves like yours!
Kudos. The emotional release at the end was so well deserved and hard fought for. Great video of the climb, felt every hold.
Massive props for that effort! That’s exactly how I think I would feel after a send like that. Great filming too!
That overwhelming surge of emotion when topping out is such an awesome moment to capture. Great video, great send Anna!
Got a lot of time for this! The quality and quantity of content you guys are pushing out at the moment is just brilliant! Anna on fire there, hell of a climb that! This was such a tense watch!
Incredible climbing! You could see how far she pushed herself out of her comfort zone at the end. Thanks for capturing this epic moment in time for us.
as a boulderER i pumped out on every gear placement by just watching as those fingers crimped. head game v strong! nice work anna.
definitely one of the best climbing videos i have ever seen. first because of the soundscape from the sea, then the beauty of the route, then the background if she is further up, then the never-ending dramatic in the seemingly never-ending route, then the background music and then the overall dramatic through which the beautiful main character moves and then the emotional happy ending. congratulations
What an amazing effort. Love to see that she seemed tense and nervous from around half the route, just before the stopper popped. But she just trucked on and kept moving up. Amazing head game on that woman. Big respect!
This is so sick! I remember Anna's videos where she talked about the fear on lead and now she leads an E8. I get so inspired to work on my fears =)

@@alejand5 Multiple hard cruxes, long route, crumbly rock, sketchy gear, lots of room to kill your self and for the fear to take you and make you make mistakes. Iron will, to keep it together; so E9 all the way. You saw it in her expression at the end. Those routes where you do nothing after it that day, as you spend the next 24 hours processing it.

this was so special, nothing added more than necessary, you can feel the real toughness of this amazing climbing and the focus in anna's face and the joy at the end, just precious. you did a great work!
Super inspiring footage! This is one of my favorite climbing videos now
As a videographer I'm really pleased you stuck long on angles. Really feeling this climb.
That was so freaking intense. Great job on Anna's part. Absolutely loved this!
What a badass Anna! That looked quite spooky and it was amazing to see you were unmoved in the moment! Very inspiring, keep crushing 🤘🏻
Congratulations guys !! You rock . Thank you for sharing this intense moment.
Very beautiful trip even for us before our screens. Thanks a lot for this moment of extreme concentration and determination, a true thriller!
That route just keeps going and going. Such an intimidating wall and all the gear looks terrifyingly small... Amazing effort!
Amazing climb. what a journey we all took with you for those 11 minutes! definitely sweating some watching that. Well done and congrats on the send!
Enjoyable! What a great send, great route and perfect team!
The music wasn't added! It's this mysterious route that does it to scare you even more.
She's such a great climber, really impressed by that send. When she has that fumble with the gear, she looked a bit worried 😦 but held it together. Epic
i would pay money just to watch her climb, it was so amazing to watch. thank you for the awesome video and the enjoyment of watching her just nail that climb like a pro. 100/100

Another mega banger! Loved the tension in this one. Give us mooore :D
Good on her! Impressive send! She made it looks easy as! Jumping from 5.9 to 5.13 seems unimaginable in my mind (even if she’s been able to climb up to 5.14a on sport). Absolutely massively impressed.
First time I have seen Anna on this site. I felt her emotion when she reached the top. Really great!!!!!
I so much admire these people… I used to skydive and I’m now a pretty advanced dressage rider and I can appreciate the discipline, the persistence, the perfectionism, the grit. My deepest admiration for you lady.
Absolutely tremendous climbing and photography. This is real climbing, done superbly.

edge of the seat stuff....great filming and production thank you
Epic video. Just what we need!
Just sent my sport 10a 3ish session project. So crazy to think of how much of a whole different level this is. I try my best to not be discouraged and feel bad about my climbing seeing others climbing much harder, but I watch these videos to appreciate and embrace the intensity of climbing moments like these. Definitely super inspiring watching her just absolutely trusting her abilities, climbing fast, and moving on despite the nerves. I know there's like 20-30+ pieces in, but I can't imagine the fear of knowing that the one right below you might not hold and if you fall you're in for a huuuuge whip haha - on slab
Nice one! It was great to see it! 🤙🤙🤙
These videos with Anna are so good
Beautifully done, despite the gear pulls. What an AMAZING looking pitch!

Anna is such an athlete and great climber..... fantastic keeping the head game going after kicking out lots of gear through the middle section.
What a beast of a climber.... her focus is a great mix a fear and determination.
And that ladies and gentlemen is why uk trad is so very special.
I love the reaction to finishing the climb, it really shows the intensity and what it means to the climber having overcome it. Amazing.
