That's part of the reason, and the other is we didn't have very good batteries compared to today. Interestingly, some of the pony motors had auxiliary electric starters. One major advantage of pony motors is cold-weather. You could never start a D8 cat in -10F with an electric start (without preheat), but with a pony motor it's no problem. The exhaust from the pony goes thru the intake manifold on the big engine and the pony also warms the big engine water. Fantastic design.

An engine so momentous it infact needs another, smaller engine to start it. Epic. The name on the manifold is absolutely correct.

The gasoline powered starter motor is often referred to as a "pony motor". The older Waukesha diesels on cranes and generators used this setup. Much more compact and lightweight compared to the amount of lead-acid batteries that would otherwise be needed to crank one of these monsters, especially in the winter!

this is my Dad's engine, he is operating it. it is started with a smaller pony motor (Hercules, made in Canton, Ohio) to start the V-12. Was a water pump for storm sewer in Saginaw, Michigan. 6 engines in a row pumping, this is engine #6. Also, runs 50 gallons of gasoline/hour under full load. any other questions just ask, glad to answer them!

I believe I saw this little twiddler at Lanesville, she's a cutie all right. I waited around for the firing up but I don't remember the small engine. I do remember reading about it being a back up pump if the electrical one's failed. I recall it was real low on hp, 300 or so, but I imagine it did have a bit or torque. She sounds good, it'd be nice to hear her workin against a load again.

Many rural areas were not supplied with electricity until the late 1940s. Even those that were connected as the grid expanded frequently did not have enough electrical power to run the types of machinery necessary. Big engines like this, while not efficient by today's standards were a vast improvement over steam, and safer to boot. Most major industries and municipal services today IE sewer and water, have massive generators to keep the electric systems working in case of a power disruption.

@hitdapipe Modern starters that run on compressed air are replacing gas powered pony motors. They are simple and highly reliable (as long as the air supply is kept dry). You still need to store the compressed air somewhere or provide it from an external apparatus. The pony motor setup is completely self-contained.

To all the people wondering how you could crank the engine without a power source: engines as big as this usually have some kind of adapter at the starter sun/pinion gear which would use planetary gear reduction, to fit a socket or hand crank onto.

You are absolutely right, but I do believe there were reasons for selecting gasoline over Diesel. Diesel engines were not truly new when this engine was in service, however you were not likely to find local mechanics who were trained to repair the complex fuel injection systems of a Diesel. Most farmers (and employees) and local garages were quite familiar with gasoline systems. Diesels also require much cleaner fuel, which was serious problem for many years.

Yes, I know all that and it still applies to rural Alaska. My point is that diesel generators are much more practical for power generation. Gasoline in stationary and mobile applications really only has a use in light duty applications. Plus diesel is much safer when used in a stationary application since it does not have flammable vapors under normal conditions, like gasoline does.
