Cliff Hanger Trail, Moab - 700 Tenere, KTM 790 & 500EXC

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Cliff Hanger Trail in Moab does just that... hangs on the edge of a cliff! The trail is rated a +4/5 and is an in and out (total of 8.5 miles) and has numerous rock ledges and drop-offs. I first became aware of the route 20 years ago when I had a rock-crawling truck. Over the last few years, I've wanted to ride it on an ADV bike but wasn't able to make it happen until this March.
I was joined by Andy from Heavy Enduro (T7), Seth from Utah Enduro Adventures (890R), and "Manitoba Charles" (500EXC). I was riding the Camel ADV T7. We got it done but not without some excitement along the way!

I bought it to ride it resale never factors into decisions for this bike. We have 4 other Camel bikes at the shop that are pristine, not a scratch. Resale is important on those ones.

No way ! Craziest trail I've seen anywhere. I've watched my share of off-road videos. Not even Chris Birch has anything to hold up against Cliff Hanger Trail. Should be rated +10. Looks more difficult that any Romaniacs Enduro course. I would think maybe one in a million riders can do this on a small 300cc or 500cc four stroke. But, no way on big KTM 890 ADV bikes. A+++ and give an Academy Award to whoever spent the time and effort to capture the footage despite the challenges. 🏆

Andy was stilling tuning the suspension on his bike. He was getting ready for the Biltwell desert race the next weekend. It's tough to get a bike set-up for all environments. If I was riding in that terrain regularly, steel pegs would definitely be on the bike. That's the first peg I've ever broken in 15yrs of doing dumb stuff on ADV bikes... that was after 2yrs of abuse.

There's so much traction everywhere... like riding on sand paper! The peg situation sucked. I hit the same one really hard a few times that week and it finally tapped out. It's fun watching this stuff. Having said that, you're asking to trash your bikes or get injured. Of course that's part of the fun. But if you have smaller dual sports or dirt bikes, why not just ride those? Because it's probably too easy LOL. Keep up the good work. I've got a t7, a wr250r and a yz250. Sometimes it is more fun challenging yourself with the big bike. But it can also be very costly.

FYI 2022 890R and had same venting issue...I took off the tank to ensure no kinked vent lines...also I put heat shield all over the underside of the tank. Issue gone. I belive it is just that the check valves are too restrictive in the fuel cap area.

Solid video. We did this trail in April 2022 on smaller bikes. Still is a bitch on a few of the sections. Great views though!

Most of my bikes are in excellent condition, they rarely get ridden. The ones I REALLY like get get the wheels ridden off them!

Great trip video and awesome fix on the foot peg. Ive been in that situation with a foot peg on a moderate-easy route so you win the prize for worst return trip possible with a broken peg! Keep up the hard riding, thanks for sharing. Hope we get to ride again one day, Im on Husky 701 now and loving life.

Also the reason the 790 and 890 gas tanks pressurize when off roading is because of the tank design. When the fuel is lower and the heat of the engine heats it up the gasses build up causing fuel gasses to build faster than they can escape from the extended vent hose and that’s why the hissing sound. All the new type of 790-890 do the same thing.

I am very impressed that you took those heavy bikes up there. I have a 450 that is 250 lbs dry and at the start of the day I am throwing it around and at the end of the day it is throwing me around. That exc is a bike I will look in to. Great video. I see a lot of dirt bike videos and seldom are they interesting but this one kept my attention. I was wondering if I would have a clutch left but I would rip it with you guys on that trail!

A 450 makes far more sense. We like the challenge of the big bikes on dumb trails!

Tough trail guys w big bikes nicely done and great teamwork. You’ll need a block and tackle or winch setup soon!! My AT is too fat for this trail but my CRF450 would eat on this trail.

The 450 would definitely be a much better option. Charles was have a much easier time on his 500 (obviously).
