The emotion from Adam during the memory sequence with his "father" was as close to real as it could get. Two years before production started in this movie Adam lost his father. So hearing him say "I love you too Dad" was him feeling like he was actually talking to his late father.

This is one of Adam Sandler's gems. This movie never fails to bring me to tears.

I really like how The Angel Of Death told him flat out “YOU were fast forwarding through your life LONG before you ever met ME.”

Fun fact the story is based on an old fairytale called “Peter And The Magic Thread” that’s more or less the exact same story only set in the 1800s and features a mysterious old woman that gives an impatient little boy (who takes life for granted) named Peter a gift of a mysterious glass orb that has a tiny little thread slowly unwinding in it representing his lifespan. She explains to him that it’s unwinding at the exact speed of human aging and this one is specifically for Peter. She tells him that if he gives it a tiny little tug on it he’ll jump forward in time a few years into the future and will get to be older and see all the things he’ll be doing by then but there is just one little catch. She warns him that once he begins to pull the thread out it can’t go back in and that the sphere can only move forward in time not backwards and that he can only have it if he will promise never to tell anyone about it. Then she asked him if he still want it? Peter impatiently insists and the story’s plot more or less unfolds exactly the same way as the movie you just watched just in a 19th-century setting instead of a modern setting. With the climax of the story that he’s a lonely old man near the very end of his life with his wife having died of old age and his kids and grandkids have grown up and moved away and as he’s weeping realizing how he’s wasted his whole life always wanting to see what happens next in the future when suddenly the mysterious old woman appears right behind him having not changed in the slightest since she first saw him as a little boy. Peter becomes enraged and tells her this is all her fault making her genuinely puzzled by his accusation and she basically tells him that he was pulling his thread long before he met her. Peter laments that he wishes he had truly appreciated the bad along with the good instead of just fast forwarding his life whenever things got inconvenient. The mysterious old woman smiles and asks him if he had just one more chance to do things differently would he do it? Peter tells her yes he would give anything for that. She tells him that this is exactly what she wanted to hear and that she’s willing to make a deal with him, she will return him and the timeline back to normal on one condition, that this time around he must live his life without the magic thread and stop taking his life for granted anymore. Peter agrees and the mysterious old woman reverses time all the way back to when Peter was a child with everything back to normal. Peter wakes up safe and sound in bed unsure as to whether the events were real or just a dream but decides that it doesn’t matter because either way he’s going to live his life to the fullest from now on and always appreciate not only the good things in his life but find a way to be thankful even in the bad things. The story ends with him heading off school with a new lease on life. Interestingly enough, the mysterious old woman in the original story is implied to be an angel just like Christopher Walken‘s character in the movie.

I lost my mom 10 years ago next month, she lived in Puerto Rico and I lived in FL. When cellphones became a thing I used to call her everyday because no more long distance plans with free long distance calls on Sunday (if you remember that, you know the pain lol). She didn't speak English, but every time we would say bye on our chats, she would say "I love you my love" in English. I never asked her where she picked that up, but used to make us giggle. I still miss her a whole lot. edit to add, this is still one of my favorite movies, I cry every time

This is one of my favorite Adam Sandler movies for two main reasons one the amazing message and because the first time I ever knew about it was because of my dad who sadly passed away when I was 16 and he and I had had our problems but I loved him and losing him absolutely broke me for a very long time especially since I wasn’t able to be with him when he passed and it was potentially preventable (he went into respiratory arrest and had a heart attack while he was already in the hospital) and seeing this movie always makes me cry because of Morty explaining he was the angel of death and then the end just because I decided that when I got to have kids one day i would make sure that they didn’t have to lose me and that i would impart on them just how important family and the people close to you are and to never take them for granted

A nursing home is cruel imo. Kids should have a home or rental for their parents where they can cook etc and where you can visit each other etc. A hospital is a place of recovery where they can go back to their house. Parents also want privacy from their kids too sometimes, so its a good middle space. A home or rental. A nursing home is unnecessary imo. In third world countries people dont have that and older folks are fine.

I REALLY wanted to like this film (Sandler had just done "Punch Drunk Love," which I loved...) and the description of the film (A modern version of "It's A Wonderful Life") made me want to see it.... instead... I absolutely hated it. One of two films I saw (the other being "August Rush") that I would remember forever as something to avoid again. So why am I here, commenting? I don't know. Triggered, I guess. lol.
