    That's exactly how I got started on my farm. I cleared a new driveway by hand, with a machete and a chainsaw, 750' long by 25' wide through the woods. It took almost two months. Now I can clear that same area in 3.5 hours with this machine. Definitely a back saver.

  • @clevingerforestservicesllc1164

    @clevingerforestservicesllc1164

    jimmy vaught I'm assuming you mean a bush hog mower attachment for skidsteers. A brush mower/bush hog could have mowed a lot of the material shown in this video, but a forestry mulcher will mulch trees. This size drum mulcher is designed to mulch trees up to 8"-diameter hardwoods, but it can mulch trees a little bit larger. I know some people will say they can bush hog 3",4"5" diameter trees, but they're not made for that. Also, a drum type forestry mulcher will cut stumps down flush with the soil, so there are no sharp stauble points left over like there are after cutting with a brush mower.

    Rob C. I appreciate that, Rob. When you pay to fix things that break, the first rule is to try not to break anything. Forestry mulching is hard enough on equipment as it is, and things will get broken just by the nature of the work. So being a good operator avoids a lot of unnecessary expenses.

    What an amazing piece of equipment. You state in a previous comment that a typical rate for this type work runs around $150 to $250 per hour depending on the job. That has to be the deal of the century. I live in Oklahoma City and saw a brand new Bobcat with a new forestry mower on it. The operator said the combination was about $140,000. That also seems very reasonable considering all the other type work you can do with these machines. It is all a matter of marketing yourself, doing great work for the customer and smiling all the way to the bank. Great video. By the way, I watch a ton of KZread videos and this is probably the first video ever that isn't loaded with negative comments.

    $3000/hr is a tad steep….$24k per day….so it takes you 3 weeks to have everything fully paid off… Plus, if you are a business, all those machines are considered business expenses and taxes will reflect accordingly….so, that may be the cost to purchase, but you are receiving tax breaks come tax time…

    You have a complete job with only one attachment. I have to use several attachments and a longer process to do what you did. First put on the rotary cutter to mow down grasses, bushes small trees vines etc. Then put on the hydraulic shear to cut larger trees down to ground level as well as cut off branches.. Next comes the grapple to pick up and move the trees to a chipper. or trailer for barbeque wood. The regular bucket goes on next to fill in holes dug by pushing over trees or just from the Bobcat turning. Loose rocks or junk is picked up and piled for removal. With grass, even elephant grass I can clear up to three acres an hour. With trees it can take the whole day for just one acre. You never have to leave your machine while I am in and out several times.

    James Ellsworth That's true. I did a lot of hand clearing with a chainsaw, etc, like you, before I discovered this equipment 5-6 years ago. Everything has a cost in some kind of resource- time, money, skills, available equipment, etc. So deciding what resource to use to get the job done is always the balance we have to figure out. This machine is definitely the right tool and most efficient way to clear land.

    Another option is fence it off with electric mesh fence (temporary) and stick about 60 goats in it. It takes about 3 months for them. To completely clear 8 acres, except for the trees, which you go in the pasture with a chainsaw and cut as needed.

    Wakeywhodat Appreciate your comment. I agree, having this equipment is much more useful than a sports car. I originally bought this equipment to work on my own land, then it turned into a business when all my neighbor's started asking me to clear their land too. For me, it was the right tool, versus a tractor. A Bobcat with forestry mulcher, grapple, and construction bucket can take care of a heck of a lot of land maintenance.

    The first time I saw one of these as back in 05. I was a draftsman for a civil engineer and part of my job was site inspector. We had a major project that was roughly 30 acres if I remember right. The company they used had millions in equipment. They rolled this thing off the low boy and it was massive. It was on the front of a huge dozier. The cutting head was about 12' wide and it drove straight into the thick of it leaving wood chips behind. It even removed large trees w no problem. I always wanted to go out and watch this massive thing work. Up until recent years I had no idea these small ones existed. If I had the money I could run one of these for about a month clearing my property.

  • @davidclevinger358

    @davidclevinger358

    G23 Yes, the industrial size forestry mulchers have been around for a little while. They are very efficient and cost effective, and leave a much better finished result than a dozer or other methods can provide. One reason you don't see many of these smaller versions of the forestry mulcher is the cost. This mulcher is 72" wide and is made by Fecon specifically for Bobcat. The 2014 retail cost of just the forestry mulcher attachment was $25,000. The attachment wieghs about 2000 lbs, so you also need a skidsteer of sufficient size, horsepower, and with high-flow hydraulics to properly and safely drive the cutter. As a land/farm owner myself, after doing a lot of research into what capabilities I needed to maintain my land, I found that a Bobcat with a forestry mulcher attachment, a grapple, and a construction bucket were the right tools for my needs, instead of the typical tractor with attachments.

He'd been running a 2014 t770, and had recently updated to a 2017, at $71,000 (which I assume included the forestry kit). And the mulcher was another $24k. Do I have all that right, David? Just found your channel today and have watched a few vids and read all their comments so far. Thanks SO much for all these and your great answers. That is a dynamite attachment, but it would not work for municipalities simply because everything has a severe slope to it. Now if you could get something like that for a hi ho to do dishes and creek banks, but then that would still be a problem because of accessibility to allot of the spots we have to do. So it looks like we are just stuck doing it the hard way. By hand, dragging it up hill with ropes and then chipping it. But I really liked watching this video, looks like that would be great fun. Every time we try to reinvent the wheel for improvements it gets booted out. Thanks for sharing.

    James Sween yes, there is just some terrain that a machine just can't operate on. Sounds like you are clearing power line right-of-ways, or something similar. I'm sure you know that they have mulcher attachments that go on excavators that have extended boom and sticks that can reach like 60 feet. But steep terrain isn't good for anything mechanical.

    Nature does fight back against humans, and on a much larger scale. Maybe you’ve heard of a few of these things from nature: viruses, bacteria, genetic anomalies, ultraviolet radiation from the sun that causes deadly skin cancers, poison mushrooms, snake venom, earthquakes that destroy cites & bury people, floods that drown people, tornadoes & hurricanes that kill people, people die from heat, people freeze to death, insects kill crops we need to sustain ourselves, volcanic eruptions above ground that spew millions of tons of ash into the air that causes deaths and breathing complications, volcanic eruptions under the oceans that kills our sea life, etc, etc. Try living “off grid” for a while. You will understand that nature dominates humans, not the other way around.

    Mister as i realize that this question is now about 2 + years old, i wonder if, you'll see it but here goes. 1st - i never knew this type of machinery existed. 2nd - do you by chance know just how long it took you to clear this? 3rd - was this your land or were you hired out to clear it? 4th - at some point i realize you had to get out of this thing to get into your truck, would you say that as you stood there, this land was now tillable? Lastly, is there enough business for you to do this enough to make money at it on the side. If, you do indeed see this, thank you kindly for taking the time with your answers. I watched it all. Just never knew this existed. Wow - what a great job. Be blessed in Christ. Scottishxpride, Texas.

    SCOTTISH PRIDE Hey there ScottichPride- Yes, this equipment capability does exist out there. Most people don't know it exists. These skidsteer-sized forestry mulchers have only really been available for the last 8-10 years or so, but the bigger, industrialized sized mulchers have been around longer, but they are used by power companies and the construction world. The clearing I did in this video took me 2:15 minutes to complete. It was about 3/4-acre of mostly heavy brush, with a small area of trees. This was a small, over-grown pasture area on my own farm, so I was able to set up a camera on the top of a 16' tall pole saw. When I'm on job sites, I typically do not take the time to mess around setting up cameras while a customer is paying me. After this material was all mulched down flush with the surface, it is ready to disc up and prep the ground for planting. I do this for farmers all of the time. Yes, there is lots of demand by customers for this type of service. I have been in the business of forestry mulching since 2014, and business is going well. Thanks for your questions and comments, and thanks for watching.

    I'm curious how the drum mulcher works. I see chains but they don't appear to flail in this video. Do they? -- or is all the work done with a solid drum, or are there mulching devices in the drum?

  • @clevingerforestservicesllc1164

    @clevingerforestservicesllc1164

    4 жыл бұрын

    The chains are only to stop debris from shooting back towards the cab of the machine. This mulcher works by rotating the drum at about 2000 RPM. The drum has a series of cutter tools on it, either carbide tipped teeth or knife-type teeth. The teeth cut through the brush and trees and mulch it into small pieces.

  • @clevingerforestservicesllc1164

    @clevingerforestservicesllc1164

    6 жыл бұрын

    Darin Hibbs Hi Darin- These drum-style forestry mulchers are capable of mulching all brush and trees up to 8"-diameters down flush with the soil. There will be no sharp and/or hard stubs remaining after mulching. Bush hogging or using a rotary-style forestry mulcher may leave unwanted stubs that can potentially injure hooved livestock. Here is a video I made showing the immediate residual effects of forestry mulching: kzread.info/dash/bejne/maGustiQqs_bfs4.html If you are within 60-70 miles of Clarksville, TN, I can certainly help you with clearing your grown over pastures.

    I just had 21 truckloads of logs taken off my place. The area where they loaded the truck is in my backyard. It’s about 2-3 acres. He mulched everything, but that area is particularly thick with mulch…Probably 6-8”. I want to plant grass. Currently I can’t drive my riding mower over it. Even with the deck at highest setting, it gets caught under it and Stops. He told me to just sow the grass over the top and I should be able to mow with my riding mower in a year or two. While I can rough mow the area with a small tractor, Its on a slope and I’m much more comfortable on the riding mower. Do you think I’ll be able to use the riding mower by next spring? I actually had planned to tow a spreader , but since I can’t drive on it with my riding mower, I’ll likely end up using a seed bag over the shoulder. Any tips? The only thing I can think of is to hand rake it into piles so I can drive my rider with a cart through and trailer off some of the mulch residue before seeding…I don’t have a landscape rake for the tractor, nor would I know how to remove the brush mower to install it!😂Thank you!

    I always tell my customers that if they want to seed an area after it’s been mulched, that it depends on how deep the mulch covering is. Seeds have to have contact with soil to germinate. Mulch that is 1”-2” will decompose into soil within 12-months. If the mulch is deeper than than that, I recommend scraping it off, if you want to seed it before it has time to settle and decompose. The best method to get the mulch off is to push it with a bucket on the front of a tractor or skid steer. Rakes don’t work well. Logging operations usually leave a bit of a mess with woody material and some wheel rutting. I don’t know condition your 2-3 acres is in, but if it needs some smoothing out, in addition to the layer of mulch to be removed, then I’d rent a small skidsteer with a bucket to clean up that whole area. Then you’ll have a smooth soil surface that will be ready for seeding. And some things to consider for grass seed- it’s good to get bare soil growing with something as soon as you can to avoid erosion. Rye grass germinates the fastest in just 3-5 days. Fescue takes about 10-14 days to germinate. And depending on the steepness of your slope, Bermuda grass grows the best root systems to hold soil on slopes. Hope this helps.

  • @clevingerforestservicesllc1164

    @clevingerforestservicesllc1164

    Robert King Orange survey tape is the best way to mark your work area. If there are no obvious boundaries, like fences, trails, etc., then I will ask the customer to mark the boundaries with survey tape. It's best to wrap the tape around a tree at chest height, and spread out a distance where you can see from one tape to the next. Marking your work area like this ensures you will get exactly the area cleared that you want, and not cut your neighbor's property. I always talk with my customers to make sure we are on exactly the same sheet of music and get the intended desired work accomplished according to the customers plan. Sometimes when owners want to build on their land, the brush and trees are too thick to even walk on or see the lay of the land in order to select a building site or path for a driveway. In these cases, I've cleared out entire general areas so the customer could see the ground. If that area wasn't what they expected or wanted, they'd have me clear out additional areas until they found the perfect spot for their homesite.

    SanFranciscoBay Yes, 99% of the jobs I do I work by the hour. There are too many variables that can affect production time, but I do give estimates to customers that are usually within +/-10% of the actual time it takes. Variables that affect time/cost estimates are the terrain, average size of the material, and the density of the material, and the actual square footage or acreage to be cleared. Working by the hour is the fairest for the customer, and the least risk for me as the business owner.

    WrenchTurner I demoed both the T770 and T870 before I purchased, and I just didn't feel a significant difference in power between the two. I ran a mulcher and did some bucket work with both of them. So it wasn't worth going with the 870 and getting the additional 2500lbs of weight, wider machine width, higher fuel consumption, etc. This would have pushed me up another trailer size, too. I'm happy with the T770 for the work I need to accomplish.

    Nick Edwards I've run into plenty of hidden stumps that you just can't see. It doesn't damage the mulcher head, but it will jerk it because the teeth bite into it to aggressively. This is not a stump grinder, but obviously it can grind stumps down. A 12"-24" stump just needs to be shaved off about 1" at a time. Usually just takes a few minutes for this size stump. I don't like doing big stumps, and I don't advertise that I grind stumps, because it bogs the head down too repeatedly and for too long and I don't like putting this kind of stress on the hydraulics. This can increase the hydraulic temperature and also creates a lot of torquing stress on the frame of the mulcher head.

This is something I would be interested finding a rental or someone with this equipment to clear it. Do you ever have any over heating of fluid during hard use? Thanks for the awesome video

    Over The Hill Singletrack Rider The size material in this video took me 1:20 minutes to clear about 3/4-acre. I recently did a fallowed field that had grown up for 8-10 years and was densely over-grown with most material less than 4"-diameters, and I cleared about 3-1/2 acres in 8- hours. I don't have any over-heating with my machine, but I keep the screens, cooler radiators, and air filters very cleaned off when I operate. I'm located in Clarksville, TN and travel out to about 70 miles, if you're interested in me coming out to take a look and give you an estimate. (931) 802-5910.

    james dickson Sometimes it's just unavoidable that you will run into something that is completely hidden under the brush. It takes a lot of focus and awareness. I never go charging full speed into areas I can't see through. Most of the time you can see fine in the material you are working in. I always walk through the area I'm going to mulch before hand just to get an idea of what's there.

    The price range for this skidsteer-sized machine with a drum forestry mulcher is between $125-$250 per hour. The time it takes to clear areas will depend on the type of material to mulch, the density of the material, and the terrain. The size areas you are talking about add up to a total of about 1/3-acre. This is a very small area for a mulcher. So whoever did this work for you would be charging you whatever their "minimum" is. For my business, I charge a 4-hour minimum plus a $125 equipment drop charge. So I'd charge $725 for this. But I'm in Tennessee. If you have an area of 3' tall grass, a lawn mowing service should be able to take care of that for you. This machine is not loud, but the wood being mulched up is loud, but not too loud. You won't hear this 1-mile away.

    No, this machine is as time and cost effective as clearing brush and trees gets, especially given the conditions of this job. This was about .75 acres, and it took 2:10 minutes to clear with this machine. As long as this machine can get to the trees and brush, then it is the best way to go. And it leaves a nice, clean finish right down to the soil, with no sharp staubs. Steep terrain, gullies, soft ground around water features, etc, would require hand cutting.

    Hi Don- I use the drum style mulcher, and have never used a disk mulcher. Having said that, I researched both when I got into this business. Mulching wood is a very dynamic and violent process. The forces involved are tremendous. I think the design of disc mulchers came from the felling cutters used in the logging business. These logging fellers grab onto the tree and push the cutter straight through the tree. Those are predictable forces that are engineered into disc shaft and housing. Personally, I just can't imagine that a single shaft and bearing holding the weight and inertia of a spinning disk, and then smashing it into hardwood trees, dirt, etc, could ever hold up mechanically for any length of time. Speed of cutting is only one factor in the overall ownership costs of equipment. Time, parts, maintenance, and your maintenance support supply chain are also factors. When I think of all of the cutting situations I get into as far as different types of material, the terrain, ground debris such as fencing, wire, etc, I just think a drum is more compact, flexible, maneuverable, durable, and requires far less maintenance time and cost than a disk. It looks like you have to cut trees primarily into the right side of the disk. This is not practical in the forest environment. How do you get wire, fencing, tarps, rope, etc etc off of the shaft of the disk that is hidden in brush? You will inevitably catch this type hazard no matter how vigilant you are. I was clearing a right-of-way yesterday and wrapped a telephone guy-wire around my drum that apparently the power company linemen didn't want to take back with them and just discarded it in the brush. These disks will also spend a lot of time contacting the dirt grinding the topped trees, so I'd want to know how often and the man-hours required to keep the cutters sharp. What is the hour life of a cutter blade? Personally, I don't think a disk mulcher is robust enough to hold up mechanically. Also, I would guess that the life-cycle costs of a disk would be much higher than a drum, both in man-hours doing maintenance on it, and parts. To me, these are more important considerations than just speed of cutting. That's my 2 cents.

    DanielRichards644 A 1/2 acre of this bigger material on a slope I would estimate to take between 4-6 hours. So it depends on the hourly charge, but I’d say $750-$1100 is in the reasonable ballpark.

    Tom Thomas These skidsteer size forestry mulchers set-ups cost between $110,000-$140,000. Most operators charge between $150-$200 per hour, and a few charge $250/hr in the high cost of living areas. The time it takes to clear 1-acre of average density hardwood forest of all brush and trees less than 8"-diameters and smaller, on reasonably level terrain takes about 6-8 hours. An operator has to personally look and evaluate the property to be cleared first in order to properly evaluate the actual conditions to give you an accurate cost estimate.

    Andrew HEWKIN The machine I’m using in this video is a Bobcat T770 and it has 92 HP. It works great and is designed mulch trees up to 8”-diameters. I wouldn’t go less than 92HP. More HP is good, so then its a matter of how much more you want to pay for that extra horsepower. And the machine will also require high-flow hydraulics to run the forestry mulcher.
