Clevinger Forest Services Demo of the Fecon Stumpex

Ғылым және технология

Bobcat T770 with 92 horsepower and high-flow hydraulics doing a demo of the Fecon Stumpex stump grinder.
I had a production rate averaging 7 stumps per hour.
Stump diameters ranged in size from 18" to 60".
Dressed the cutting edge daily after about 50 stumps, using an air compressor with die grinder with a 3" diameter 80 grit paper.
Removed a total of 400 stumps

I always get ahead of myself and this time i was expecting that thing to start whirling the speed of a helicopter blade and watching the stump explode! Still, at the slow speed it was effective and got the job done although my vision would have been more entertaining LOL. Thanks for sharing!

tbirdracefan You are right about that, it's always more fun to watch stuff explode. Haha! I know this isn't an exciting video to watch, but I did want to show others how this Stumpex works. And it does take out the stump all the way down to the tap root about 15"-18" below the surface. If the are any forestry mulching topics you're particularly interested in, let me know. Thanks for the comment.

Hi Tarzan- I rented this Stumpex to clear about 440 large stumps on my farm, so I don’t own it. It took me 6-days to grind all of the stumps I had. I sharped the cutting edge on this Stumpex at the end of each day. I used an electric angle grinder with a 5”-diameter 40 grit flap wheel. Just took about 10-minutes to sharpen each day. This Fecon Stumpex cost $19,900 new back a few years ago when I made this video. Not sure what they cost today.

So many people on here commenting on how slow this unit is. They don’t seem to realize that a typical stump grinder would take just as long or longer to grind that same stump. Plus, many traditional grinders will not necessarily get all of the stump. They create such a mess that it’s easy to miss portions of the stump. I can’t even tell you how many times a client has called for us to come re-grind a stump because we missed part of it. This tool is efficient, safe and guaranteed to get all the stump the first time!

I thought of this method when I was in the city and saw some 2 foot wide tree stumps between the curb and sidewalk that needed to be removed. A chipper would have made a lot of noise, a big mess and you would have to close the sidewalk . This method would have been quiet and clean.

Farm_In_The MiddleOfTheWoods This cutter is definitely safer and neater than the typical rotary stump grinders. And 4-1:2 minutes to grind out a 24” diameter stump is good production. To sharpen the cutting edges, I used a compressor with an angled die grinder, and 60-grit 3” disc pads. I dressed up the edges about every 50-60 stumps, which was the daily production rate I was getting with this.

Don Challenger Yes, this Stumpex was extremely quite in comparison to a typical high-speed disc cutter stump grinder, much cleaner results, and safer. The gear box on this generates something like 22,000 pounds of torque force, so it was very effective cutting into the stumps. With this design mounted on a skidsteer, you are able to drive the cutter down 18" below the ground surface so you can completely destroy the main tap root of the stump and any larger horizontal roots. If you were using this to remove a stump in your yard, after you ground the stump apart you could simply shovel the mulchings back into the hole, cover it with soil, and throw grass seed on it and you'd be good to go.

Raymond Hodge You're right about that. This Stumpex was very safe, easy to use, and effective. It didn't throw material, so it would be good to use around homes and streets. Although I found it very slow for high-production applications, it definitely had the torque/power to cut through all of the stumps I used it on. I tried this Stumpex out on my farm to grind out just over 400 stumps following a logging clear-cutting. I was able to grind 50-60 stumps per day. The cutting edges did need some touch-up sharpening with a die-grinder at the end of each day.

Very interesting! I see a lot of disparaging comments about speed, but to get to the end result, I don't see where it takes much, if any longer, than a hi-speed cutter, while doing a much neater and more thorough job. Getting down and destroying the heart of that tap root is a big plus, especially if you're stumping potentially invasive re-growers like locust or sycamore. Price is certainly an issue. I figure 1000-2000 stumps to pay off the attachment, incl maintenance, while still paying the operator a decent salary? That's a lot of stumps! Maybe my math is off.

C.J. Rogers Yes, people who comment about the slow speed of the cutter are missing the point of how effective and efficiently is takes care of a big stump. I guess if they want excitement, I could have blown up the stump. Lol. I demoed this Stumpex for two reasons: first, because I had 15 acres of big stumps to get rid of, and second, I wanted to evaluate it to see if stump removal would be worth adding to the services I provide to my customers in addition to forestry mulching. The Stumpex work very well. I was grinding an average of 50-60 stumps per day, and I did just over 400 stumps in the 24"-60" diameter range. The cutter blade needed sharpening after each day, but it got it done. I never worked out the owner-operator cost to run it, but I'm sure it would take a lot of stumps to get it paid off.

Without seeing what you have left there, it is definitely more efficient to have an experienced operator do the work. It would be a lot faster for 11.5 acres. But if everything is laying on the ground, fairly level terrain, and not technically complicated, and you enjoy running equipment, then I’d give it a try.

  • @clevingerforestservicesllc1164

Mitchell Smith On these stumps that were about 24"-diameters, this Stumpex would grind the core of the stump, what I considered the tap root portion, down to a depth around 12"-14" below the surface where the core of the stump root would just completely disintegrate.

My 2017 Bobcat T770 cost about $71,000, and the Forestry Mulcher attachment costs about $25,000 new, in Tennessee. awy1977 I will use the forestry mulcher on large stumps like this only if they are fairly soft or rotted, which normally takes several years. But normally, I don't use it as a stump grinder since big stumps cause the mulcher head to bog down to a stop repeatedly and over extended time of 10-15 minutes, which is not good for the hydraulic system and components. This size skidsteer mulcher is designed to continuously mulch through trees up to 8" diameters, so I try to stick to those limits for the sake of my equipment.

Noah Schwartz Thanks for your comment, Noah. No, this is the only speed it operates at. The engineering behind this concept was to use a massive gear reduction gearbox to convert the 3200+ PSi high-flow hydraulics into a slow moving, extremely high torque cutting action. This cutter does in fact power itself through the stumps and tears them up pretty effectively. The slow speed also has a better safety aspect to it by not throwing debris like a high speed cutter and it's less likely to damage the cutter when it hits rocks or comes to a sudden stop. I demoed this and found that it does do an effective job grinding stumps (I used it to grind out 400+ stumps), even though it's not very exciting to watch.
