Clever Double Barrel Sporting Rifle

This double-barreled sporting rifle made by Christoph Funk in Germany is not much like the typical over-under double-barreled rifle. It began as a fairly standard Mauser bolt action, chambered in 7x57 Mauser with a 5-round magazine and a nice double-claw scope mount. What Funk added to this was a .22 caliber rimfire action and barrel inside the front handguard of the Mauser action.
The .22 action is simple, and its barrel is very light - their addition does little to disturb the balance or handling of the gun. A striker cocking lever was added behind the Mauser bolt to actuate the .22 firing mechanism, and what appears to be a double set trigger is actually a trigger for the Mauser action and a trigger for the .22 action.
A very clever way to allow a sportsman to have a round of proper rifle ammunition ready for medium game while simultaneously having a round of .22 rimfire ready for a shot at a small game animal.

    .22 was popular in Germany back in the day, because you'd save the skin/fur from foxes, and .22 did of course minimal damage while still being effective over range. Especially in Drillings, where you'd have an "einstecklauf" (insert barrel) that'd run through the shotgun barrel.

    To answer Ian's question at 2:00, the manufacturer Christoph Funk Gewehrfabrik went out of business in 1960, after the Soviets helped themselves to most of their machinery in 1945. It seems they spent the post-war years only producing arms parts and precision instruments, but not complete arms anymore.

    the popularity of such guns is indeed at least one effect of European gun laws. With gun registration, the number of guns becomes an issue. So case of the more common Drilling configuration, you get a rifle AND a shotgun. I think they've made a few with all three barrels different such as a 16 gauge and a 7, 8, or 9 mm centerfile rifle barrel side by side on top and a 22 lr on the bottom. Usually it's two 16 gauges and then any one of the various rifles popular in Europe on the bottom from 22 lr on up. We had a Savage 24J with a 22 mag on top and a 20 guage on bottom.

    Yeah, these .22 extra barrels where there to be ready for everything. The big caliber for wildboars and roe buck, the small .22 for the occasional rabbit or fox or maybe a trash panda. Today a lot of hunters shoot foxes with regual caliber since it's mostly for pest control and not for the furr.

After the reunion of Germany in 1990 only a small company named "Suhler Jagd- und Sportwaffen GmbH" remained. As the name says they are manufacturing rifles for hunting and sports. The brand under which the rifles are sold is "MERKEL". They managed to expand a little in 2010. Homepage is: www.merkel-die-jagd.de/ Really beautiful stuff. And the Book about Christoph Funk says that the upper barrel was designated for hunting deer and stuff and the lower barrel for hunting smaller animals like foxes or bigger birds and for training. -> www.korsholm.dk/media/wysiwyg/PDF/Funk-Suhl.pdf

    This is a good idea, often while big game hunting you get the chance to groundswat a grouse(totally legal in Montana) but you can't justify the noise or ammo expenditure of using your centerfire rifle (also you need to know exactly where the point of impact is a extremely close range cuz it would be pointless to hit anything except the head).

Main barrel is in 7.92x57mm. I own it now but I have yet to hunt with it. That was my thinking as well, though I think in addition to the waiting periods some European countries also limit the total number of firearms you are allowed to like 3-5. Since it is technically a single firearm you would essentially get two firearms without the second one counting against your total

  • @Asko83

    @Asko83

    More likely it price and weight are the issue. Shotgun/rifle combinations were(are) really popular in some parts of Europe because with the price of one gun you can hunt multiple types of prey and particularly in mountain regions carrying one gun while hunting is much better than having a shotgun and one or two rifles. (For example I've seen triple barreled guns with one 12g shotgun barrel, one largebore rifle barrel for deer/elk and a smallbore barrel for birds.)

  • @decnet100

    @decnet100

    9 жыл бұрын

    Asko83 I think along those lines too. These were definitely pre-WWII guns (as I've written elsewhere, the manufacturer stopped producing complete arms after 1945), and in that time the home country of this rifle restricted who could obtain and possess arms, made them go through paperwork for each gun, but if you were a regular hunter, then at least the federal law didn't have too many restrictions on the number of hunting rifles you could own. So I'd say it was indeed more of a convenience/flexibility/weight feature. Price might not have weighed into the minds of buyers of this particular rifle, as Christoph Funk Gewehrfabrik was known as the maker of very high quality, innovative and also rather expensive firearms - I'd suppose you could have easily bought three cheaper guns for the price of this back in the day.

  • @decnet100

    @decnet100

    9 жыл бұрын

    SpaceCowboyfromNJ I think that was not so much the case in Germany, the Law of 1928 for example limited hunters to 10 rifles (more than that would be considered an illegal arsenal, in the light of ongoing armed groups of all political extremes plotting to overthrow the fragile democracy after WWI) which I suppose was at least not that much of a restriction that hunters would automatically seek to combine different guns into one without any additional benefit.

    It is the melding of two different rifle into one. This is a very clever design adaptation in that a standard Mauser actioned rifle can have the tipping breech .22 mounted directly under the main barrel in 7x57mm. Therefore you did not have to go to the expense of a Swilling style (two barrel) hunting rifle being hand made at great cost.

    The reason for a .22 cal on the rifle is a old German tradition. Say if you are hunting and shot say a Stag and when you went to get it and it was still alive or even a hog, instead of letting the animal just bleed out like we do in America the Jägermeister would go to the animal and use the .22 to dispatch the animal. So this weapon was more or less made in the tradition of not letting the animal suffer an to have respect the animal.....Now there are other traditions where if you come back from the hunt and the .22, but that is other stories. Now before anyone questions why I know all this, I am first gen born in this country, my father was born and raised in Germany, and hunting is more of a family heritage than a sport in my family. And have learned the traditions of the old world from my father so they would never die.

    this is called a "Schonzeit Buechse"; hunters in Germany are in the field (Revier) year around and not just at hunting season; the purpose is to take varmints with the .22 when ever encountered; limits in the amount of guns owned and price is only secondary; And of course the main barrel is for hunting game in season

    Yeah that's a very cool rifle, it almost also looks like it could be a magnum 22 magnum round cuz it looks a little bigger than a 22 long rifle case on the camera.

    It seems to me it'd be possible to design it so it also would have a .22 box mag inserted in the rifle as well. Though it'd have to be put in such a way as to not obstruct the mechanism between the trigger, thumb switch, and firing pin.

    The Germans love the doubles and drillings, they are craftsman.

    Great vid thouroughly enjoyed watching it. Living and hunting in Germany I get to see and experience many of these great firearms. But I noticed that you said it wasn't a double set trigger. I could be wrong but in the video it appears that the 7mm mauser trigger has a set screw. This would indicate a Ruckstecke vs. the Deutsche Stecke that the dual trigger setup would normally indicate. Did you try pushing the forward trigger forward to set it like on a drilling?? I'm no expert on this yet but I am a huge fan of the German trigger setups. All of the drillings produced here have a set trigger of this design where the forward trigger is a set trigger as well as a trigger for one of the shotgun barrels and the rear trigger fires only one barrel, be it shotgun or an einstecklauf, or full length rifle barrel insert.

    You could also use tracers in the .22 to make sure your sighted and on target before firing the main rifle

    Ian, speaking of double barreled sporting rifles, do you think you'll ever be able to get your hands on a Steinkamp SW1? It's a bullpup "break action" over/under rifle, would love to see an in-depth video on it.

    It would be interesting if the 7x57 and 22LR could both be fire for group size and point of inpact for comparason of drop etc.

    Since there's separate triggers for each barrel, there's nothing stopping a shooter from pulling both at the same time.

    How would you aim this thing? I don't think these 2 particular cartridges would have the same drop since the 7mm should substantially outrange the .22 round.
