Although no doubt he was also angry about being denied his surrender.

    Louis Swanepoel That’s true but even when friends quarrel and drift apart you still miss the good old days. For a couple of years me and one of my close friends didn’t talk at all bc we’d had a disagreement and I ended the friendship. And despite my anger at what happened I was still really saddened by it because I’d lost a friend. I think that in that moment (if Caesar really did weep) he didn’t see the severed head of his enemy but the desecrated corpse of an old friend. If Caesar really didn’t know anything about his death then I doubt he would’ve been ready to shed crocodile tears on a moments notice and that those tears were genuine.

    Caesar was pissed off with Ptolemy XIII having Pompey beheaded for a couple other reasons: 1, The punishment for a former consul being an enemy was usually exile 2, Ptolemy owed Pompey Magnus a huge favor and he repaid him with betrayal and beheading him? Bad move. 3, A kingdom that was indebted to Rome had to respect Roman law and one of those laws was not to harm a Roman citizen of any class without Rome passing the sentence--in short, only Romans had the right to kill Romans, and even then, there had to be good reason. 4, Despite being enemies, they were still old friends and former in-laws. 5. Ptolemy violated a basic ancient law of hospitality.

    is this where the "HE WAS A CONSUL OF ROME" is coming in? cause i almost thought that was about Ceaser and how he went on holiday for 3 months after having been out of the country and cut off from the world (quite literally) for half of his term already.

  • @KTChamberlain

    @KTChamberlain

    NimbleDick Crabb // I never said that, although Historia Civilis pointed out in the video covering Caesar's term as Consul in 59 BC, Ptolemy XI had no legitimate heirs and in his will left Egypt to Rome, but Caesar did not press that claim and Ptolemy XII did a lot have Rome essentially legitimize his claim to the throne despite being a bastard and maintain his kingdom's independence so to speak. Ptolemy XIII did not plan to have Caesar and Pompey killed together. He had Pompey killed on arrival in the hopes of currying Caesar's favor since he won the civil war*, but he learned the hard way that that was a bad move and would later live to regret that decision. But when Caesar occupied his palace and then later supported Cleopatra, then he sought to try and kill Caesar. To put it simply in a comedic fashion, that Boy-King dicked with the wrong Dictator.

    alus nova that movie is incredibly cheesy, though. It didn't really accurately depict Greco-Roman civilization or the major figures of the time period. The dialogue was terribly contrived and the special effects are just meh. The costumes and settings are also terrifyingly unauthentic for the Hellenistic period and late Roman Republic. The combat depicted in the film is also laughable. Spartacus was a much better film.

The Romans had annexed Pontus and the surrounding territory after victory in the Third Mithridatic War in 63 BC. However, Caesar would make Mithridates King of the Bosporus for helping him out of this sticky situation.

Plus she speaked egyptian for the first time in the lagid dynasty XD But no one seemed to use that against her at the time. I like to think that the Siege of Alexandria and the Battle of the Nile can be summed up in these words: Sink or Swim. Caesar managed to slip out of his armor when his boat capsized and swam across the Alexandrian harbor; by contrast, Ptolemy sank under the weight of his golden armor when his boat capsized and drowned in the Nile.

She was engaged in civil war with her brother Ptolemy XIII at the time and had previously raised her own army in Roman Syria and marched it back to Egypt in order to confront him. Sneaking herself into the Ptolemaic royal palace in Alexandria and wooing Julius Caesar was a shrewd political move, along with everything else she did afterwards. You're grossly simplifying it.

    We are able to distinguish between the various male rulers of the Ptolemaic dynasty by their Greek epithets, so that Ptolemy XII is referred to as "Auletes" ("the flute player") and his son Ptolemy XIII (Cleopatra's rival brother) as "Theos Philopator" ("the God Who Loves His Father"). Personally my favorite one is Ptolemy VIII's nickname, Ptolemy VIII Physcon, "Ptolemy the Fat". Lol.

Though personally I believe it was a little of both. He was saddened that his friend and fellow Roman was killed like a common vermin. But that his plan to parade his adversary in chains in Rome And be seen as the savior of the republic was dashed by the Egyptians, Seems too plausible for a general and strategist of Caesars’ level not to attempt.

    There is a large number of scholars that are of the opinion that Caesar knew about the assassination plot. He was very clever so one wonders why he ignored all the evidence both human and divine. Well, 1) his epileptic fits were becoming more frequent and it was taking him longer to recover; 2) the political situation in Rome was becoming too much to handle; thus he planned to go on campaign to get out of the kitchen so to speak. When the plot came along he had a chance to go out at the peak of his career and maintain his auctoritas. He had the examples of Pompey, Cato, and others pointing to the road he did NOT want to take.

    @@briangeeslin5938 Where'd you get that from? This Isn't Sarcastic, I really want to read/listen on speculation of Caesar resigning himself to fate in the hopes he left behind a stable groundwork for a successor to the republic.

    Oh, of course! How silly of me. A courier came from Alexandria. Caesar has lifted the siege and massacred the armies of Ptolemy. He is safe and sound, and master of all of Egypt. The man is a damn prodigy, eh?
