Clearance Keto Bars Review: Ratio, Atkins and Quest

Keto products tend to be expensive, so if I can save money (and help you save money), I'm all for that. In this video, Courtney and I try out the keto bars from Ratio and Atkins, along with Quest's protein cookie.

I think the Quest cookie was on clearance because they recently reformulated the ingredients again. I was looking at them the other day at the store and the new version ditches the soluble corn fiber in favor of polydextrose. Not sure if it that is better or worse but it is a change. They actually have images on the Quest Nutrition online store that shows both the new and old ingredients with the disclaimer "Due to a minor product update, there is a chance you will receive either of these two products".

I like the Atkins bars that are wafers, similar to kit Kats. I don't care for the quest cookies either but I sometimes take them backpacking so I have variety. My issue with all the quest cookies and bars is the erythritol. It burns my mouth is the best way I can describe it. I would much prefer sucralose if using cheaper sweeteners. Monk fruit would be my preference. There is a bar that tastes very much like kind bars but are sweetened with allulose and monk fruit called Munk Pack Keto friendly bars. The sea salt dark chocolate are my faves. The only drawback is backpacking with them when hot because the chocolate melts. 13 fat, 14 carb (5 fiber, 6 allulose) 5 protein.

I always dumpster dive in the clearance rack at Pick 'N Save myself and usually keep an eye out for products that I can eat- but I've never found any to be worth the carbs, calories or contents. Also, sweets are a trigger for me, so a bar a day can easily morph into a box a day. If I want something good, I'll usually just make it myself. Exception is the Aldi chocolate protein shake. It is so vile tasting portion control is no problem. Appreciate the video and your adventurous spirits.

Hi Steve n Courtney! 👋👋🐈 I select my keto acquisitions via a "dumb n simple" ingredient approach. If I have to fall back to my old, worn out, "Morrison and Boyd", or if the list runs down the length of container... its a no-go purchase (best to simply kitchen-up noms oneself). My brief life before keto, as a Vegan, adapted my food choices based on label reading. Vegans LOVE sugar sugar and a bit more sugar. "Tiger's Milk" bar... holy molybdenum, that's a blast from the past! After practice, I would wolf down half a box, chased with several Fresca's.....ugh 🤢 Thanks for this vid, you sunburned kids! A mystery to the disappearing Barbie Pink Lemonade, eh? Will you please keep us up-to-date, in up coming vid, IF you discover the culprit... and what they thought of the stuff? 🤗🤗🐈

I like the ratio Keto bars. I have a ton of them. I found a fantastic deal a few weeks ago in a local Grocery Outlet. A pack of 8 bars is usually at Ralphs (Kroger) for $11 or $12. Insane. I got a pack of 8 for $3. A whole shelf full and I bought 10 packs. The reason I like them is I can crumble them over things, make my own parfait for example. And the best thing is they do not melt. I have a few in the car and when I am out and about and should happen to be hungry, I can just grab one. No chance I would buy them for $11 or higher though. Atkins I never liked. And everything quest I have ever tried has a weird aftertaste.

There are only 2 Atkins bars I eat. They are basically the same bar but one is peanut butter and the other is chocolate. I can't remember the name of them but think of a Nutty Bar from Little Debbie. It is peanut butter or chocolate cream in between light cookie layers and the whole thing is dipped in chocolate. The peanut butter one is covered in white chocolate. Each bar has a total carb count of 8 carbs. I am not sure how good the ingredients are but the bar tastes good and has the lowest total carb count I have found for a whole bar. Most bars have 12-25 total carbs. That is too many for a bar, in my opinion. I would rather have the extra carbs by eating vegetables. The bar that has 8 total carbs does fill me up but I find myself still hungry later.

The Ratio bars are "fine", and generally have a box of them from Costco as a sort of backup for when I want something different from my usual fare. They are a little TOO crunchy and dry though. Quest products are all over the place with their ingredients with most of themb unfortunately containing sucralose. The current scientific literature about the effect of sucralose on the gut biome is enough for me to immediately put them back on the shelf. That said, there is no sucralose in their current peanut butter cookie and I find the flavor to be quite good and works great as a "dessert" for me when I want something sweet. If given the choice between the Ratio bars or the Quest PB cookie, it would be the Quest PB cookie by far.

I'm not trying to convince you that Sucralose is a wonderful thing, but the study you reference has been widely refuted due to the INSANE amount of Sucralose the mice were forced to consume daily of the length of study. I extrapolated how much I would need to consume on a daily basis to equal what these mice were given, and it was the equivalent of 84 packets of Splenda. That's PER DAY. Ultimately, though, it's your body and I respect your choice to consume or not consume any given product.

@@SeriousKeto I'm not sure which research study you are referring to, but there is research from a couple of years ago about "low concentration" sucralose effects impacting gut biomes. Granted it has the caveat of being a study on mice, but I would rather err on the side of caution considering how important gut health is and how we still have relatively little knowledge about it. From the research paper: "Although many studies have deeply explored the impact of sucralose on gut microbiome, most studies were close to the concentration of ADI (5 mg/kg BW/day) (16, 17). In this study, we found low concentration sucralose also significantly altered gut microbiome by setting four concentration gradients, and it might involve in the development of diabetes." "FDA defined ADI for sucralose in humans were 5 mg per kg (body weight) (18), 0.3 mg/ml is equal to a mouse with an average body weight of 0.02 kg" "Many previous studies had shown that ADI (0.1 mg/ml) of sucralose significantly altered mice gut microbiome (37, 42). These results were consistent with T4 group in our study, however, the new finding in our research was T1 (0.0003 mg/mL) group, like T4 (0.3 mg/mL), also altered mice gut microbiome." "Overall, our study demonstrated sucralose administration did not change mice body weight, but low dose of sucralose (0.0003 mg/mL) significantly altered mice gut microbiome, including the increases of Tenacibaculum, Ruegeria, Staphylococcus and Allobaculum in genus level in mice jejunum, ileum and colon. The decrease of Lachnoclostridium and Lachnospiraceae in cecum of T4 group mice. Although the sucralose of ADI (0.3 mg/mL) level also altered the gut microbiome in mice, the human daily intake of sucralose is usually lower than this concentration." As a follow up I'll also add this limited human trial study as well. With the equivalent consumption of 4 Splenda packets per day in the nonplacebo cohort the researchers observed: "This clinical trial demonstrates, for the first time, that consumption of 48 mg of sucralose every day for ten weeks induces gut dysbiosis by increasing Blautia coccoides and decreasing Lactobacillus acidophilus in healthy non-insulin-resistant young adults. As far as we know, this is one of the first long-term clinical trials showing that sucralose amounts, far lower than the suggested ADI, alter the balance of the gut microbiome, while also being associated with significant elevations in AUCG and serum insulin in response to glucose loads." @@SeriousKeto Oh how I wish I wasn't. It's in so many keto products because it's cheaper to include than the other, better options. 😂 I go where the best evidence takes me. If further research is released that convincingly refutes the low concentration results I posted above, I would certainly be open to incorporating it in my diet again.

@@SeriousKeto Not knowing what to look for was my mistake when I first started low-carb. Still lost weight quickly (48 pounds in 6 months) but missed this important risk factor for inflammation and atherosclerosis. 3 years later, it is time to burn that nasty old fat off again. Yeah, I've tried a Quest cookie or two....and had the same reaction - not for me. Some of the Atkins products though, man they nail their bliss point to draw you in and entice you to ignore the ingredients. I'm genuinely curious what the Atkins bars would do to my blood sugar.

I have to guess your cookie was old & stale? our taste buds usually align fairly closely... and I have enjoyed several flavors of quest cookies, and so have my non-keto family. I use quest products in general mostly for "less-worse" treats for movie snacks, Halloween, Easter, stocking stuffers, etc. They won't eat most of the cleaner keto products but will eat quest chips, bars, cookies, pb cups, etc. Not clean enough, and in case of bars not low carb enuff for me, but at movies, or holiday I'll have the other items now & again.
