"Clear link between AstraZeneca and rare blood clots" | DW News

The European Medicines Agency is expected to update its advice amid new concerns about a link between the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine and blood clots. A senior official in the agency said in an interview published on Tuesday that there seemed to be a connection, although it was unclear how this happened.
"In my opinion, we can say it now, it is clear there is a link with the vaccine. But we still do not know what causes this reaction," EMA head of vaccines Marco Cavaleri told Italy's Il Messaggero newspaper. "In the next few hours, we will say that there is a connection, but we still have to understand how this happens," Cavaleri said. "It is now increasingly difficult to say that there is no cause-and-effect relationship between vaccination with AstraZeneca and very rare cases of unusual blood clots associated with low platelet counts," he added. The EMA was already expected to provide an updated assessment this week. Questions about serious blood clots in a tiny minority of cases have undermined confidence in the AstraZeneca vaccine.
Several EU countries including France, Italy, and Germany - the bloc's three largest countries by population - either suspended or limited the use of the vaccine before the EMA declared that the benefits outweighed the risks and it should remain in use.

I work in a big biomedical institute where we deal with covid swabs, we do tests on tissue, blood etc to understand the virus. I chose to be part of the study so there will be more data. I'm sorry for the 7 people (that maybe would have died from a blood clot anyway). I'm going to focus my grief on those 7 and forget the 2,890,911 that have died of COVID. Because of these 7 it's unacceptable to try to save another million deaths. Let's just leave them to COVID instead. (there's no logic in what you say.. public policy is about attempting to save people.. some may die in the attempt.. but that doesn't mean you should stop trying to save them.. @@povertyspec9651 I'm amazed that people keep repeating such things this late in the pandemic. In my country (just eyeing the numbers right now) at least 50% of the dead have been people under 60 that had long lives ahead of them. Including children and babies. You worry about 7 people dying out of 13 million vaccinated? I worry about 5 small children out of 36 thousand total cases. I worry about 4.5 thousand total out of 36 thousand. Your statement just doesn't hold up. My colleague that recently died may have been obese, but he would have lived a long life. Our cousin in his early 40s was diabetic, but certainly he would have lived a long life. Stop repeating incorrect statements. This pandemic has taken almos 3 million PRECIOUS lives from the world. That's true. There were 17 blood clotting cases in the U.S. after 20 million injections of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, plus one fatality (a 56-year-old man in Miami). This compares to 40% of the 62 VIPIT cases reported for AstraZeneca that ended in death. The 40% figure is ringing alarm bells. But AstraZeneca is more widely used, 200 million doses administered I think. Likely the vaccines are not directly causing the cases, they are just cofactors.

The blood clots ARE caused by the vaccine. 100% They admit it "In my opinion, we can say it now, it is clear there is a link with the vaccine. But we still do not know what causes this reaction," They are clearly in panic/cover up mode with double-speak bs "still do not know what causes this reaction,"?....clearly the vaccine cause the reaction. The stats are that fewer than 10 people per million vaccinations will develop clots, whereas 1-2 people per 100 with COVID will die from it. Do you drive? Gone swimming? You’ve a far higher chance of being injured or killed doing those things than getting clots from this vaccine. Perspective will be your friend if you stop, think and consider these things. I have not heard of any CANZUK country suspending AZ vaccine. Australia certainly won’t. I think New Zealand won’t either. Canada wants to limit it to folks over age 55 (completely unnecessarily). And the UK just wants to give younger people a second vaccine choice. Even Europe is just thinking in terms of a low age 30 cut-off rather than 55. These are all measures to appease nervous nellies rather than to suspend the use of an unsafe vaccine.

  • @cloudpoint0

    @cloudpoint0

    3 жыл бұрын

    @Dean Clark Do you have actual evidence that AZ is higher risk than other vaccines? J&J and Sputnik V use the same technology so they should behave the same. There were 17 blood clotting cases in the U.S. after 20 million injections of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, plus one fatality (a 56-year-old man in Miami). The safety record of vaccines is unparalleled. No pharmaceutical is more carefully tested. The blood clotting link to vaccines is dubious at best. There are many other things that can cause blood clotting to happen in daily life at higher rates than the vaccines (vitamin K, tonic water, penicillin, certain pain killers, pregnancy, smoking, obesity, contraceptives, cancer medicines, flu vaccine, etc.). And the virus itself causes blood clotting at a much higher rate than is claimed of any of the vaccines. The fact that thrombocytopenia is more common in the general population than among those who have been vaccinated by AZ argues against a link too. But maybe there is some indirect link for the one in a quarter million people that has a malformed or strange immune system. We are already fairly certain that it is the antibodies made by the vaccine recipients and not the vaccines that are behind the blood clotting in these rare individuals so the vaccines cannot be directly blamed.

Or people who’ve had coronaviruses in the past & then get the vaccine respond w/ coagulation? Bcuz my understanding is that the Moderna & Pfizer vaccines are gene therapy products, they’re mRNA vaccines. & the AstraZeneca & the Johnson & Johnson vaccines have an adenovirus in them which is a virus found in chimpanzees. Interesting to me that the Sars Cov 2 virus isn’t even in any of the vaccines. Any thoughts? Thanks for any input. 🤔

Astra Zeneca does not have a chimpanzee virus inside, it is just the shell that has the characteristic of an animal adenovirus, but inside is uses double-stranded DNA code designed to improve your immuno reaction agasint the sarscov2. the adenovirus’s tough protein coat helps protect the genetic material inside. I've had my first dose of AZ but I do think that if there is a causal link between the vaccine and younger women having a higher risk of developing these rare blood clots then they should stop administrating it to the younger age group for now while they investigate it a bit more. I do think that there have been enough people that have had to deal with the adverse side effects of the vaccine for it to be questioned and re-assessed . I will say though, if you do get the chance to get a vaccination and it so happens to be AZ, i think you should consider it nonetheless since the risk is very very low. Also because Pfizer has also had incidents where people have developed blood clots, I just think AZ is getting all the negative press due to it not being administrated for profit.

I note that you do not mention the any data or give any references which is surprising for someone who claims to be a scientist or doctor. 1. When considered in the context of morbidity and mortality from COVID-19, the benefits of vaccination far outweigh the risk of anaphylaxis, which is treatable. ( JAMA Insights,February 12, 2021Reports of Anaphylaxis After Receipt of mRNA COVID-19 Vaccines in the US-December 14, 2020-January 18, 2021Tom T. So that is less that 1 in a million chance of death and now we know to look out for the problem it is probably less than that. ( funny how you don’t mention the data). 3. Delayed immune reactions or VADE, there have been problems seen in animal trials of vaccines in the past. The trials did their job and showed up these problems. Sars is closely related to covid and previous experience developing a Sars vaccine has taught vccine designers a lot of extremely useful lessons for designing a Covid vaccine Some Saars vaccines targeting the N protein caused this problem and it was picked up in the animal trial. The current crop of covid vaccines use the S protein and there have been no reported cases of VADE. in the animal or human clinical trials or apparently in the large numbers of people who have been vaccinated. This a theoretical problem, whereas the pandemic is real. (Antibody-Dependent Enhancement and the Coronavirus VaccinesBy Derek Lowe 12 February, 2021) 4. Your final point is full of nothing “ Results COULD be,” “ The other POSSIBLE effects” no evidence, no data just idle speculation. You even try to suggest without evidence, that fertility problems in developed countries are due to vaccines, all sorts of reasons have been put forward for this. I have heard this nonsense about the vaccines being a form of Gene therapy too often Gene therapy is the introduction of normal genes into cells in place of missing or defective ones in order to correct genetic disorders. Covid is not a genetic disorder and the S protein is not replacing any defective gene. I cannot imaging any real scientist or doctor spout such rubbish. A vaccine is a substance used to stimulate the production of antibodies and provide immunity against one or several diseases, prepared from the causative agent of a disease, its products, or a synthetic substitute, treated to act as an antigen without inducing the disease. Which is what the new covid vaccines do.

    Well, I dont mean to scare anyone, but in Italy we had a few cases. Young ( 40 years old) healthy people died just one day after the jab. We are very worried.

    I wonder if adverse affects are under reported because people don't want to risk going to the doctor for adverse reactions because the don't want to risk catching covid

    I took the vaccine this afternoon and I just had a stroke a month ago, so, I am hoping I can get through. This far I have not been feeling any side effect and it is more than 10 hours now. A follow-up comment I will do in a week for any or no effect. I am 67 years old.

    The unusual blood-clotting syndrome potentially associated with the AstraZeneca vaccine is novel and has been given its own name. Just as the novel coronavirus caused a new disease called COVID-19, so this new clotting syndrome has been called VIPIT, for vaccine-induced prothrombotic immune thrombocytopenia. It was named by experts in Germany.
