Turning 37 next year and strongly considering switching careers from a Scientist 👩🏾‍🔬 working in Pharma to becoming a PA. I just stumbled upon your KZread channel yesterday and it is SUPER helpful!! Thanks so much!

I love being a PA! It’s perfect for my personality! First, you get into the workforce making 6 figures in your 20s. You don’t sacrifice a decade of your life. You can switch specialties whenever you want. It’s mentally challenging and morally rewarding. I actually get tons of autonomy as the sole in house provider in the cardiac ICU. It’s really great. I hope to use my career as a PA to jumpstart my dream of health policy and improving our healthcare system one day :)

Hey, love all your videos! Just a note, in the part where you began about the job duty differences, as a pre-PA student in 3rd year undergrad, (for lack of better words) I had noo idea what you were talking about lol! I heard ED and some other terms, I thought a little explanation would help please 🥴

i'm in the process of applying to PA school and i do not get why PA's and MD's are compared so much. they are two different jobs and at the end of the day physicians are just more knowledgable, their track made it so it would be that way, a PA can never replace an MD and an MD can never replace a PA.

I think the thought is that there jobs are similar so there will always be a desire for individuals to try to compare to figure out the need for one over the other but I believe that both professions are needed, if they weren't it wouldn't be as it is.

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but what happens if a physician doesn't know how to handle a case? Do they consult with other physicians?

I'd also mention that PAs can switch specialties if they desire. You can work as a psych PA for a few years, maybe get bored of that and switch to being a surgery PA, maybe get tired of that and jump to something else.... whereas MDs are locked into whatever their residency training is, unless they are willing to do another residency.

I've heard that while this is possible, it's not frequently done because of the difference in skill set you acquire and a steep learning curve.

Some corrections ... Education PA - 2 years MD - 7+ years Job duties PA - Always need an MD to sign off on the cases (easy or hard) Average Compensation (not starting) PA - $105K MD - Non specialty $250K; specialty $350K Autonomy PA - cannot own their own practice. Only NPs in some states can do that.

Signing off is not true. In my state I have worked directly with PA's who saw patients with no staffing or signing off by MDs.

Lol!!!! The average GPA for PA school depends on the institution but it is typically 2.5-3.0. The main difference between a PA and an MD/DO is that PA’s do not learn medicine. Your degree is not a clinical degree. A medical degree is a clinical degree. Physicians go to medical school to learn how to diagnose and treat medical conditions with medicine or surgery. PA’s do not have this experience. There job is to “assist” physicians.

So I typically don't respond to comments like this but I figured let me clear up some of your misinformation, since you may be new to my channel. 1. The avg GPA for PA school is institution dependent but it's typically a 3.5ish. 2. PAs do learn medicine which is the practice of caring for patients by managing their diagnosis prognosis and treatment of their injuries. 3. our degree is clinical as in we medically treat actual patients, and 4. We yes we do assist physicians as in we help them by doing a share of the work which is pretty noble; Period! Thanks for your comment 🙂
