The teenager working at Valvoline thought I was crazy for bringing the car back from yesterday's oil change but I remained insistent I needed to make sure I got all the acetone out from my accidental engine flush - I probably sprayed a couple ounces of CRC throttle body clean right into the camshaft from the PVC hose intake connected to the air box. So then I added Lucas - after I had driven a bit without the Lucas. So then I got the oil change yesterday - added some more Lucas. My silicone shaft seals started leaking but they were leaking a couple years ago from using MMO in the crankcase. So I think it's just since the oil is so thin. So the seals still leaked with the LUCAS in but not as much. But then my mileage was terrible and I discovered the Lucas totally clogs up VVT engines. Luckily I didn't put in that much. Maybe 8 ounces at a time - twice. So then I returned back to the 2nd oil change - explaining how I had to MAKE SURE I got all the acetone out of the oil as the acetone eats up the seals. So as I drove home I reset the MPG average and it had jumped UP a mile at least! I could not believe it - I was getting over one mile better than the factory rating for the MPG and this car has 267K on it. hahah. Thanks for the advice on insisting on multiple oil changes in a row.

I miss those times when KZread videos was like this, simple, straight to the point, no BS. Now, KZreadrs stretch a single video with so much unecessary BS just to get ad money.

Owen, thank you for going to the effort to do this experiment and share it here. This is super interesting. I think it should be particularly informative to those who let the motor oil drain for an extended period, even overnight, in hopes of getting the cleanest oil after oil change. To me, your experiment shows that extended drains are in vain, unless they combined it with multiple changes.

Appreciate the last bit about it being an experiment haha as i was thinking this would not be feasible for the average person to do on the regular, looks expensive with all that new oil and new filters used

Instead of actually using an engine flush additive, it's best to do two to three subsequent oil changes like this do a thorough clean without having to have the additive ruin the seals.

Wow! Interesting! I always wondered how many would it take or if it had any impact if it's clean or just with 1 change. You should have done it in more detail, like Temps, or more stuff like that with an program or an machine that takes in consideration all that. Idk if ODBC does it. Anyway, I've seen with Liqui Molly it lives your oil at lvl 3/4 with flush it once. Would be interesting to see how clean or how many times does it take to be completely clean if you use Molly like 2/3 times. I know it's an expensive process such as the one you showed. Really apreciate the time! Awesome work! Definitely goona sub!

LM Engine Flush, Amsoil EF, and 505CRO are all excellent, high quality products. Use dino oil and a cheap filter for a week. Let it run nice and hot. Then drain and replace the filter and oil with a good one. 99% removed.

Did a similar procedure about 27 years ago with a used car I just bought. We also added a chemical flush to the original oil and each one after. Can’t recall exactly how many we did but enough that the last drain came out clean. I do remember the first 3 at least came out very dark. This was a GM 2.8 liter v6. Changed the oil every 5,000km after that at home with a Chem flush every time, car ran great until it rusted apart. Did have to swap out the transmission, should have done a few drain and fills on the transmission as well.

So you say the car is still with you and working like new?

Three changes got the job done. Subsequent changes had mostly a cosmetic effect. Going extended interval makes the oil extra dirty. It is best to change more frequently with cheaper but still properly specked oil. Oil companies say you can go extended with their product but will not tell you you'll need an extra flush afterwards ($$). Imagine the damage to new oil if after an extended run with fancy oil a normal mineral oil is used afterwards! It will be junk from the start. It is best not to do these super extended drain intervals. 10k is ridiculous. One should probably not go past 5k especially if the car is older and has some blow-by past the rings or runs rich, contaminates oil with fuel. Thanks for the video, awfully wasteful in oil but very illustrative. Subscribed.

i did it differently, when the first time the oil drained finished, i used compressed air to blow the rest out. I had to use a big hole as to create a huge air current. It worked but made stuff messy

Nice. 3 was the magic number, IMO. I need to do that to my new to me car. Took the valve cover off, and it looked cruddy. Lack of oil changes, obviously. But it has 280k miles, so, ya know. Could be worse 😆 Nice vid 👌🏻

@Owen Lucas Thanks! That video is what led me to this one in the first place! Was a very interesting video also. I was thinking about using a chemical like you used in that video, but like I said, my car has about 280K miles... It doesn't seem to be leaking/burning oil now that I've changed the valve cover gaskets. I'm a little concerned about using strong chemicals in such a high mileage motor that I'm also pretty sure has been neglected on oil changes and standard maintenance for at least the previous 5 years. Previous owner bragged about how he'd driven it 5 years and 100k miles and only charged the alternator in that time. I've seen nothing that leads to me believe he did anything to the car that wasn't keeping it from running. He took "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" to heart with that car 😂 So, I'm just thinking of doing what you did in this video. I'm sure it won't do quite the job the chemicals do as far as cleaning. But it also won't potentially over clean things that I might not want over cleaned 😆 Might change the oil 3 times like you did, and then put a bottle of some light engine cleaner. Something that stays in for like 1k miles slowly cleaning. GG

Great video, decided to sub. I would love to see a second engine flush maybe on the 4th or 5th attempt just too see how much extra dirt it would bring out. I know that would probably cost a lot just be curious how many times you could repeat this process till the engine looks completely new. I'm about to do my very first oil change myself on my bmw 320d and will definitely do a double flush. But if I had more funds I'd do what you've just done in the video. Every used marvel mystery oil? Can be used as a light engine flush, or oil treatment and fuel treatment. Seen amazing things with this product.

I've done this, multiple clean oil flushes, then a chemical flush. No difference, no additional removal, even oil analysis showed little increase in particulates. On a 15 year old engine, 170k miles.

​​@@OwenLucas I have used MMO in the crankcase for many years with success, as it is a very gentle cleaner. Project Farm further confirmed its cold start and wear protection properties for me. But I would not recommend it for the fuel tank on modern cars with catalytic convertors. It contains sulfur. My cat had to be replaced right after using this stuff in the fuel.☹

you can try diesel ci-4 instead of synthetic gasoline engine oil for the repetitive flushing and see the difference. i've tried once

I have a 2002 Tacoma with 300 k miles and the previous owner must have taken fairly good care of the engine because I have changed the oil twice since I have had it and my oil is perty clean it’s got color and is not black by no means.

Can you please tell us does this effect a positive performance on the car?? My mechanic did not tighten the oil cap after service so there was leaking he subsequently had to drain the new oil out and put more new in I found the car ran a lot better

I haven't noticed any difference in driving, but starting does seem quieter with the fresh oil compared to the 8000 mile oil, especially since it is below freezing here in the mornings. If some of your engine oil leaked out from the mechanic not closing the cap then it's possible it ran worse because of a lower oil level. I had a friend who's engine burned so much oil, by the time they changed it less than 2 quarts came out and it looked like tar. New oil, to the full level, made a huge difference!

Now did it come out clearer next oil change ?

Nice. Glad you went through that… but oil viscosity is more important than color.

I once came over a comment saying when you flush with cheap oil either u add it max level like usual oil or add it half then run 10 mins then drain and again add the other half then run 10 mins and then drain again before adding the usual engine oil.

I would always fill up to max level, if you go lower than the lowest allowed mark on the dipstick, that could be bad for your engine.

Can you do 2 flushes with fresh oil and original filter and then new one once you’ve done the last flush ?

Add Liqui Moly to old oil, run for 10 minutes. Drain, add new oil and replace filter. Run engine for 10 minutes, drain, replace oil and filter. Good to go, no need to flush again at this point.

I used to think I was changing my oil correctly all these years until I assisted a fellow pilot change the oil in a Cessna piston single airplane. He also in the past built high power race engines. He fully drained the oil until it barely dripped. Then with the drain plug still removed he poured new oil in and observed what was coming out. He kept slowly pouring in until the oil flowed clear out the drain. Then he installed the drain plug and put proper amount of oil in. I wonder if this technique might have saved one complete change using your criteria? Any thoughts? Thank you.

That's a very interesting technique, literally flushing the engine. I agree, it probably could have saved an oil change. My logic to running the engine was to circulate and warm up the new oil to capture as much of the old oil as possible. The first oil drain is very black because it has 8400 miles on it, even though I was using Mobil 1 High Mileage Extended Performance, I decided to change the oil early for my next video....and as you will see, very clean oil is required.....stay tuned! I kind of did something like that by accident. I forgot to put back the drain plug and wasted around half a litre of oil. 😆 After putting back the plug and filling it up, the oil has become very clear in the dip stick. By the way, I used STP engine flush before and this was the final third engine oil refilling.

Yes I started and ran the engine for about 10 minutes or so. To be honest this was an experiment, no need or benefit to do it in a vehicle. An engine flush with Liqui Moly would do a more thorough job.

It depends on your vehicle, driving style, and time between oil changes. Most modern engines can go to 5000 miles but you are fine with 3000 if under heavy duty use.

@@OwenLucas So mate my Audi had the same VW oil for 2.5 years and 22,000km. I only ride motorways & 95% with cruise control. In April 2022 I changed the oil with a high quality full synthetic oil and re-changed it after 3000km. Do you think this was a good way to clean the engine?

@@jerryx2000 An engine flush is a good way to clean an engine, especially if you have higher mileage. I would say almost any engine can use a flush after 160,000km on the odometer. 95% motorways is not so hard on the oil, but that is quite high km. Then again if you were using a high quality oil to begin with, you are probably fine. What really breaks down oil are high temps from towing and idling like in a construction vehicle or taxi. The instructions with Liqui Moly state not to rev the engine, just idle it. The oil is thinned from the flush chemicals so lubrication is reduced slightly, so adding a load onto the crankshaft could cause more wear on the bearings.

I bought six 5 liter jugs of oil, and used about 4 liters out of each one. I had a lot of left over oil including the usewd oil of which the last 4 drains I reused since it was in great shape.

Change oil every 3000 miles ( this used to be common, and still is with mechanics ) with synthetic oil and there will be no dirt build up and 500,000 mile engine life with a new Japanese engine.

So in the end you are just stuck with as much cheap oil in your engine, then there was black oil leftover after the first flush? The engine always keeps some and is never fully empty, interesting.. And I wonder if it is recommended to do an oil flush with chemicals added every other maintenance period, or is a simple flush just enough?

These flushes were just for test purposes only, there is no benefit to multiple flushes. Regarding a chemical flush, depending on your conditions, vehicle age, and maintenance, I’d say a flush every 50-100k miles is fine.

Ok... off to get some more oil and filters then to quench my ocd.

This was probably good to do anyway because you guaranteed the majority of any liquid moly that absorbed into any deposits or were left coating anything were out after the second cheap Mobil 1 non extended change you did after draining the flush+oil.

@@OwenLucas that's okay. The gimmick is overrated and they always say "you can go longer" like that one sentence is worth buying the TBN. Changing synthetic at 6k is sufficient and I'm pretty sure at 7500+ is just fine. Sludgy is what I'm more looking at. That's why new oil will always start faster. Next time I'm going cheaper and doing the $20 Napa one.

I'm gonna need about 130€ for cheap 5 4litre oil, 5 cheap oil filters and an engine flush additive, without the final good oil and oil filter..

dark oil doesn't mean it has gone bad , in fact , all motor oil will turn dark within few hundred miles of driving , just keep on top of your OCI then you are good to go , especaily with a Toyota engine , nothing will go wrong.

I saved the last 4 oil drains, back into the bottle. A 5 quart ( .94L) jug of economy oil can be purchased for $22 with an economy filter for about $4. at Walmart. Supertech is their store brand. Walmart is the most economical retail chain in the US.

My 1.9 tdi chage oil every 60-70.000 km and it's 100 times more perfect than any new engine that change oil every 10000 km.....

So minimum 4x

It depends on your age, mileage and how much sludge you have. In my older 180k mile engine 4x made it look pretty good 6x was basically clear.

My high mileage kia gets a double change every other oil change 😅

I would rather do this rather than having to pour engine flush in my engine. This is undoubtedly a waste of time and money but 100% safe on your engine.

I don't believe in those things. In most oil pans those drain plugs sit above the bottom of the pan, therefore the pan doesn't fully drain so you are diluting fresh oil with your old contaminated oil. If you are lazy, I guess it's better than not changing your oil at all, but not as good as fully draining the oil old school.

I just learned how to work smarter than harder through my 18 years of cars ownership....the drain valve has a short thread so it doesn't go up to much in the pan to make a higher drain exit....I change oil frequently more than anyone so... Old residue mixing up with new oil is not a biggie, although it happens in any type of motor if let a car to drain for hours there will always be old oil at thr top and bottom and in the pump... The valve is very high flow it drains fast... And scooty kilmer a very well known mechanic.. You can search him talking about the valve too....when unbolt the plug it makes a hole for the oil to escape and when you turn the valve open it makes the same hole for oil to escape with a little less diameter... It will take little longer but same process

Change the oil every 4000 or you will be sorry. And mad

Seems rather wasteful but I can see for the sake of science.

...8K on ANY MOTOR OIL is absurd and sacrificial to say the least.....
