    Thank you! Did not know you could use that type of scrubber! For years I used only the back of a knife! This is much better!

    Recently the gourds I have cleaned for crafting I did not soak at all! Instead I high pressured washed them with the hose outside then did a clean up job with warm/hot water and scouring pad inside.

    Thank you for making and sharing these Wonderful videos. would like to share one of my own tips on cleaning gourds / Calabashes, I have found using a paint scraper works very well, which is a small handheld tool with wooden handle and a metal end. I shapen the mental end with a stone and I fine that work very well for those hard parts. Colourfulcalabash Kenya

    Thank you for the comment. The amount of time they soak depends on the gourd for me. If I know the gourd is on the thinner side I don't want to have it soak any more than an hour. As for those stubborn gourds with the white skin that are so hard to clean, I let them soak for most of the day. I'd love to see your work!

    You're welcome! Yes, a metal pot scrubber does the trick for most gourds. However, if you're worried about scratching the gourd (depending on the art piece you're making) use a plastic scouring pad instead of a metal one. It is a bit gentler.

    3:52 I searched online and in stores and have yet to find this "elbow grease" But really thanks for the video I grew some for the first time this year and they look horrid right now (Oct. 29th) but they seem like they'll look fine once they get cleaned when they dry!

    +Jims Allotment I do sand them, but only after I have thoroughly cleaned them of the mold and dried epidermis. Otherwise the sander gets gummed up too quickly. I have used a power washer though which may be something you want to try if you rather not do the soaking and scrubbing. It does work pretty well for many gourds.

    how´can you get gourds with thick walls, say for a banjo= im currently growing canteen gourds, and i fear that the walls might end up paper thin.. is there any trick when drying them or something ot make sure the walls are stocky?

    To grow thick-shelled gourds you need a strain of gourd seed that has a thick-shell, but also you need to make sure the gourd matures completely on the vine.

    Can you use a small lightweight rechargeable drill to power scrub the outside and the inside?

  • @BernadetteGourder

    @BernadetteGourder

    Sometimes, but often for me it can be pretty stubborn so a more powerful drill would work better, at least for the inside. Outside I use elbow grease but I have seen the use of a drill and scrubby on the end with the gourd in a makeshift vise.

    +Lindy Scott Many of my gourds are too. I use a large plastic tote, fill it all the way up to overflowing with water, put the gourds in, and then put the lid on, forcing the gourds to stay in the water. A tote with locking handles is best, although you can also use a board and weight that down. Hope this helps!

    This made me think and I thank you for that. I’ve been drying some snake gourds to paint for Halloween decorations and decided to be cautious. Have an old waterproof footlocker size container into which I put some bricks. Then placed some flat bungee cords around them. I added my gourds and used the bungee cords to hold them down loosely to the bricks. Filled the container with water let them soak. Less pressure on the gourds. With round gourds maybe place in a net and weight the net to the bottom of a container.
