Cleaning the EGR Valve - Toyota Fortuner 1KDFTV
This video demonstrates the process of cleaning the EGR Valve in Toyota Fortuner (3.0L D4D engine), however the overall process would be common for many other vehicles. A dirty & clogged EGR valve would negatively affect the vehicle's performance and could cause more damage to engine. Diesel engines are known to create more carbon soot, and hence its recommended to check the condition of EGR Valve once every 50-70K KM, or when symptom are noticed. (In my case I did this task at 120K KM, which was quite late !). Also ensure to regularly change your engine oil + oil filter, diesel filter and air filter - these are most regular maintenance activities to keep the vehicle in good condition. In my case, after this EGR clean-up, I could immediately notice the performance improvement in my vehicle.
For general ref, the above tasks was done at a private garage (the mechanic was knowledgeable & supportive), it took about 6 hours to finish the job. To give an idea, typical labour (service) charge would be between INR 2000 to INR 4000. It is highly recommended to replace the respective gaskets - they dont cost much. I used a special Carb Spray Cleaner, whereas at many places they use diesel to clean the soot.
