Cleaning Stock Troughs with Goldfish - Brilliant!

We have decided to trial goldfish to clean our stock troughs. The idea of cleaning our stock troughs by emptying all the water didn't sit well with us and thought there must be a better way. Using goldfish may be the answer and apparently all farmers do it. The goldfish will eat all the insect pests such as mosquito larvae, water borne bugs and the algae especially in the summer. This will save the water volume being emptied, but most importantly the enzymes from the camels saliva which aids in protein nutrient absorption that we want to transfer to the cattle. What could possibly go wrong?

Been doing this in Ireland for a few years. Works brilliant. They get big.

Gidday Les. The fish swim to the bottom when the stock come over, so they dont get eaten. Weve kept fish in our cattle troughs for years to keep mozzy numbers down. Cheers

Would like to know if there is an option to use native fish? I know you said it’s not near any water sources but goldfish essentially equals carp.

Such a stupid idea. People have done this in Australia and spread the stupid things into our Rivers. Please don't do this. Use only native fish. Very selfish and short sighted. Should be huge fines for this.

Hi Greg, thanks for your concern. The stock troughs are in the middle of paddocks. There are 100's Mts if not Km's to the the stream. There's no possible way the gold fish could reach the creek. Cheers
