My vet is a neonatal and emergency specialist with horses. But he also knows camelids. When I had a 2 day old cria with diarrhea, he said some animals have issues digesting milk at first and to give 1-2 doses of Lactaid dissolved in water. Can also give 1-2 doses of Imodium to control the diarrhea until the Lactaid works. I have only had to do this twice in over 10 years, but it worked both times. This is only for newborns. Once they are a week old, it will be something else. And prime time for a newborn to go septic is 3-4 days old. Either they are born septic or get the infection through their navel. ALWAYS dip the navel and make sure they get colostrum.

On our second week of goat ownership one of our baby goats strangled themselves in the fork of a tree. I had just gotten her to start eating out of my hand the day before.

Same can be said of chickens and ducks. I've lost a calf as well. That's farm life (and death).

Human grade diatomaceous earth for Parasites. Works great for us humans and we also give it our dog. Wonder how effective it would be for goats?

How have goats survived up to this point? It sounds like they are on the verge of death constantly. We had goats for several years when I was young and we never had any problems or had to have a vet. What has happened?

So if I live in a very dry climate (New Mexico) do I not need to worry about parasites? We have sand with just some bushes, no green pastures like you have, haha.

Similar situation here. My friends have a med sized herd and they rotation graze ans keep all hay and grain off ground. Their hay rack has a tray that catches anything that falls and keeps the kids out. I haven't had a lot of trouble with worms in the past (my first herd 20 years ago). I probably wormed 1/yr ir something but that was a different era! we had cocodiosis once. (Orphan goat). Treated the entire flock and everybody was fine.

I should be fine in the desert. Get a bit of rain (and weeds) in the winter, and monsoon (and weeds) in summer.

Electronic ear tags and a good set of automatic scales will tell you when any of your animals are losing weight. That's a common first symptom of anything going wrong.

At this TIME, I have one goat. Her name is Elle-May, she will be 2 at tye end of this May. She has grass hay she can eat anytine she wants & she also gets 1-2c. Corn, & 2-3c alfalfa pellets, less when its warm weather. She also gets to get out for a few hour, most everyday to eat fresh nibbles, of trees, bushes, & what every she wants for the most part. The rest of the time she is in a dry lot, it makes me 😥. I have a good size yard with lots of grass. I wish it fenced so she could eat all she wanted.

Yeah groups are silly to cure anything but great for ideas for research and common sense. 🙏running hands on all of your animals and kids is critical, your kids, meaning humans ones will object so hug them, kiss them and search them when they are not looking, teens can be tough about this, lol😂
