Cleaning IAC Idle Air Control Valve FJ80 3FE | Idle fix

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I show you how to fix a rough Idle issue I have been having on my 1991 Toyota Land Cruiser 80 series 3FE 4.0.
This will work on the FJ80, the FZJ80 and the Lexus LX450 since they are virtually the same engine
I show you where the IAC is on a land cruiser and how to properly remove it without stripping the screws and clean it to fix the Idle issues you I was experiencing.
Here is the adapter set from harbor freight
www.harborfreight.com/hand-to...
And here is a ratchet that will fit it

Great video! One note is that the Phillips screws on Toyotas are actually JIS screws - they are very, very close to PH but the slight difference can aggravate the issue of stripping heads. JIS screwdrivers and screw bits are readily available on Amazon, eBay, and plenty of other spots at a variety of price points. Vessel is the best known brand and is really good; Anex, Hozan, and others make them as well. A #2 and a #3 JIS screwdriver should have you good for everything on your LC. The good news is that JIC drivers also fit into true PH screws very nicely so they can be used for both..

Spot on. Thanks for putting this in. Just like you said, I stripped my bottom screw. Tried to take it off with an impact driver and the entire housing then broke. The cheapest I could find the new part was $217 on eBay. At the local auto parts store was over $500!

That is a stepper motor, you won't be able to push the plunger (the tapered metal seal) in like that. The plunger rides on a screw/auger and when the motor spins it moves the plunger into a hole or out of it to control. This controlled air bleed allows for the automated idle control. You can easily take the IACV apart where you see the seam in the the plastic base of the motor housing. Once done you'll see exactly how it works. If you manually adjust the plunger all the way out so (to where it's furthest from the motor and should be fully seated in the hole on the manifold when reinstalled) and then put it back together leaving the electrical connector off, the truck will run but idle low until the engine warms up. I had to due this on my 3FE FJ62 (3FE is 1988-1993) because I have another issue yet identified which keeps telling it to open up more than it should raising my idle 1500rpm. Also as others have said, use JIS bits. Penetrating oil, tighten a bit first and/or give the screw driver a light whack with a hammer to avoid stripping the head of the screw. Oh and the little metal sleeves are there to keep you from tightening too much and cracking or defining the plastic mounting tabs.

Just a couple of tips. I always pre soak nuts, bolts and screws with penetrating oil before I start to work on them. Another old trick is to try to break the "lock" or resistance of a bolt by turning it into the housing before trying to undo it. Also, good point about putting lots of pressure into the head of the bolt as you try to undo it so as to not "mangle" the bolt head. By the way "stripping" refers to damage done to the thread portion of bolts.

1:30 The IAC and TPS sensors are actually JIS #2, THE ARE NOT PHILLIPS HEAD... as are most screws on the truck. Getting the correct JIS tip will make your life easier, because it is easy to strip out the Phillips, even when using impact, because of the shape of the flutes. The JIS engage like cams and require less pressure (usually). Also, replace those screws with torx heads.

My problem is backwards! It wont idle fast enough with the AC on. I already adjusted the idle flat head screws and no luck. I would replace those screws with allen ones and some anti seize. 650RPM are for AC off. Forgot to mention that mine has a solenoid to compensate the idle with the AC on.

Thanks for this video my guy! I will give this a shot as my truck also seems to stumble at red lights. Kind of a big ask but do you have any insight on trouble shooting a non-working rpm guage? I don't have a FSM yet so it's been difficult to get info on the system.

Speaking of air... does the FJ80 have the so called "Tuna Can" pre filter under the Air Filter housing? I've been reading recently a lot about it, tried to open mine, took off the two claps but looks as if it is stuck or perhaps the previous owner put silicone in it. Just wandering if the FJ80 has it too

Yes, the 80 has it. I took mine off and cleaned it out. There's two holes in the bottom of it with a rubber flap that attaches into one hole covers the other.

I would like to caution folks against this process. The Toyota service manual specifies removal/replacement of this part by removing the cooling assembly it is mounted on (two bolts) In my case, the screws did not strip, but the valve itself came apart as the plastic housing has essentially melded with the cooling. This causes small internal parts of the valve to fall out and I had to guess how to reassemble. If the plunger needs to be cleaned, I recommend removing as per the factory service manual, and using a pipe cleaner or some other tool to reach it instead of removing parts as seen in this video. Good luck!
