This is part 2 of a hoarding cleanup project that I took on. The original owner passed away, and his girlfriend was allowed to continue living in the house. Unfortunately, she was a severe hoarder. When she left, the heir to the home was left with this nightmare. Nobody would help him, so I volunteered to do what I could.

My mom isn't exactly a hoarder but she has no cleaning or organizational skills so her house gets disgusting not because she doesn't want to get rid of things but because she let's it go till she gets overwhelmed and then gets mentally paralyzed. I have to go in every so often and clean everything out just so she can function. I am quite familiar with fly poop at this point.

I’m bipolar, the same happens with me..it doesn’t make us feel good, ashamed is what I feel..but my house looks nothing like this. Plus I have 2 adult sons and husband. One of my sons is also a high functioning autistic, cleaning isn’t his forte lol. Thank you Midwest’s for making these videos, I had billy, my autistic angel watching this with me, he LOVED the natural cleaning sounds lol. I bounce back and forth between not cleaning at all and going on an absolute cleaning binge. What I find gets me going though is giving myself one chore I want to accomplish, and once I've started/completed that one, I typically feel motivated to keep going, do one more thing, then another one, then another, until I tire myself out. I feel like there's something a bit ... poetic (for lack of a better term) about cleaning this house. Like, it's never going to fully recover from the mess it contained for so many years. But even if it still faces gutting or demolition in the future, it can still be cared for now - and that act of care can help inform our practices moving forward (like with the pinsol and scour brush). After cleaning, you can see what it was this house was meant to be. I can imagine the hopes someone had when they bought the property. The memories they wanted to make. People usually hoard because they can't come to grips with past trauma. I hope whoever owned this house still has time to make good memories and have a life that isn't completely oversaturated with the bad memories they are/were trying to bury. I can't help but see cleaning this house as a metaphor for extending compassion to people who may be difficult to extend compassion to. Thank you so much for not only doing this work, but also sharing with us. In a short video and without many words, you reminded me that hope, compassion, commitment, care, and willpower / elbow grease are so important and can make a real difference even when the end-result (gutting / demolition) is the same.

There are also scientific studies out there that show that a lot of “hoarding syndrome” is due to a brain malfunction. Hoarders are in many cases vilified and stigmatized over something in which they have very little control. They need our compassion for whichever were the catalysts, mental or physical, that brought them to this point.

What I am finding works really really well to cut through that Tara nicotine and all that sticky yucky stuff that gets all over the walls and everything else is ammonia. I usually mix up a big bucket of hot water and ammonia or I'll put it in a spray bottle and it cuts right through everything just make sure that your room is well ventilated and I always have a fan on also.

This product would have made that kitchen sparkle. If you can find it where you are, give it a try, you may be very happy with the results. Also, do you have a steam cleaner? They really work well especially for grease. You are really doing great by the way, this is no easy project.

This is really inspiring! I’m well into a much smaller project (just an unfinished kitchen and bedroom) in my client’s basement apartment. The house is gorgeous and over 100 years old. Her tenant, who was the previous homeowner, grew up there. As he grew older and less physically capable, he began hoarding in his room and wouldn’t let anyone in. I’m realizing I LOVE the dirty jobs. There was mouse poop everywhere, and active mice running across the room on day one - It felt so good to clean it all up and sanitize everything. I think more than 12 bags went to the curb from that one small bedroom. I hope I can get to a point where I’m ready for bigger projects! I love my job so much I watch other people work after I get home 😂 Keep it up!!

my grandparents are almost hoarders (if they are it’s not horrible) the downstairs of their house is clean and neat but the upstairs is dirty and filled with boxes. you can’t use the bathtub because theres so much boxes in it. theres 5 rooms filled of all their stuff but it’s still not enough storage.

you need a commercial strength degreaser for walls that bad, i have used both dawn (not the dish soap, the degreaser, it's purple) and something called a meat room degreaser with very good results. Right now the kitchen I work in uses ecolab chemicals and their degreaser is great. Just spray them on, let them sit a few minutes, then scrub. I will admit in really greasy kitchens, if the wall finish can handle it, my favorite degreaser is plain oven cleaner. Spray it on, let it sit anywhere from ten minutes to two hours (covered in plastic wrap to keep it wet with the windows open), and everything usually wipes straight off. No scrubbing!

One cleaner I have used, on the top of cupboards where dust and grease collect and get sticky, is washing soda mixed in water. What once was a sticky difficult mess will wipe off like plain dust. It worked better than 409. It may be good for just maintaining and not deep cleaning. You do HAVE to wear gloves with it since it will dry your hands pretty badly. Good work dude! You always do a great job.

I like the green scouring pads better than the blue sponge ones. ODO-BAN is expensive but I love it because it breaks down through grease so well. and I like spot cleaning the tops of stoves with oven cleaner to get through the baked on grease quickest. I like strong bleach on light colored painted surfaces because it can whiten the stains below surface to not being noticeable. I've been wanting a steam sprayer tool but the ones that look quality are awful expensive. I'm just listing my favorite things but you are not getting paid to replace or buy expensive products so I totally get using basic ingredients. You have the most expensive tool and that is determination ❣️

There are a bunch of kinds of glass cleaner concentrates on Amazon, I had no idea. I drive professionally so I was trying to find the blue/purple stuff they use in gas station buckets lol. I needed to be able to clean my windows really well with no streaks, on the side of the road, so I wanted a no rinse mop and squeegee deal. I got easyglide glass cleaner by unger 😬 But a window cleaning pro on KZread said to just use a few drops of Dawn in a bucket of (hot?) water. One of the reasons i like the unger stuff is that it smells faintly like incense instead of stinky horrible Windex (which gives me a headache), and you can dilute the Unger kind a lot. It's $10 and it makes *25 gallons at full strength

I used to be a cleaner and one thing that really helps is dishwasher powder or tablets, they are great for pretty much any dirt and you don't have to soak for hours, it is the product i have used well this and in second place but a very close second and that is citric acid, I buy it online in bulk these days but you can buy it in shops etc, (white vinegar if you cannot get any citric acid) it's really great for cleaning anything limescaley or for cleaning windows or glass or anything that you want to sparkle, in your washing machine too and it's a culinary so you can cool off with homemade lemonade lol. So yh, two really useful cleaning products, dishwasher detergent and citric acid and not expensive either. P. S. My mix of hot water, dishwasher detergent, washing up liquid and a little thick bleach is my magic mix, it's really a very good product for oily and very dirty items.

You're right about exposing contractors to biohazards. You also make a great point about that house serving as an excellent lab for development of skills and techniques for professional cleaning. Carry on.

I am a cleaner as well, I charge about $3000.00 for such a job - I work alone so it can take me about 3 days, the kitchen an laundry and bathrooms are normally that hardest- I spray the ceiling with a bleach mix using a weed killer sprayer - be generous let it soak a bit the hit it with a flat microfibrer mop - 400mm. It’s works like a bomb- take long strokes- change a rinse the pad very regularly- don’t use soap on the ceiling- mostly water paint is used but not in the bathroom- I live in NZ so knowing what paint is used where is good. Dude you should charge something just to cover your chemicals- good on you though- it’s very satisfying handling over a disinfected house to the new/ old owner.

Something that would probably help with using the drill brushes is getting a second handle attachment that comes out the side, so you can hold it steady and comfortably with both hands. If you can't find one for that drill, you can always try to design one yourself with 3D modeling software and have it printed out and shipped to you from a 3d printing company

I came in 8 hours later and was lightheaded from it I seem to be allergic to pine sap and newer pine lumber and perfumes and other chemicals. I wonder if the lemon is that much better for those of us who can't use Pinesol.

It looks like someone once cared deeply for this kitchen, judging from the stenciling above the sink and the brick veneer above that. Sad it got to this state. Do you have more knowledge about the history other than what you mentioned in Part One? And, how did you start this service? I can't imagine asking if you can "come clean your mess," was how you started. Though I'd love that kind of help, I don't think I could appreciate that kind of offer. It's a wonderful kindness. Tell me please, how did you diplomatically approach home owners?

I've just decided I need to go ahead and get my pink or purple drill for cleaning purposes! My aunt and uncle moved into a home that was somewhat hoarded about 3 hours away from me. They have health and mobility issues so my boyfriend and I spent several weekends cleaning it and repainting. I wish I had seen some of your videos prior to help with some of the cleaning solution ideas. We threw out several dumpsters and truckloads of items. Part way through, we realized it was also likely used to cook meth. We found so many drugs and I almost passed out wiping down the walls in one of the rooms. Thankfully, I was gloved up more or less from head to toe and wearing a mask. I ended up just throwing away the clothes and shoes I used to clean that room.

I also have those drill attachments. I have a 46 piece of the whole set for my drill and impact driver and what I've learned through trial and error is that you have to mindful with the brillo pad attachments, they are very effective with tough spots, though they take the top layer of paint off unfortunately. I do vehicle detailing seasonally and they're my go to. I use to deep clean my apartment all the time and learned the hard way. Lol. Very satisfying video to watch, keep up the awesome content.!

My favorite heavy hitting cleaning product is Bac-Out. That stuff is amazing! It's a enzymatic cleaner so no harsh chemicals to make you gag and cough. I spray it on whatever I'm cleaning and let it dwell for 5-10 minutes (depending on level of gross) and the mess melts off and wipes right up! It cleans, deodorizes and disinfects. I have 3 dogs and two cats and it's safe to use around pets too. I buy it on Amazon by the gallon. Highly recommend it!
