CLEANING A HOARDER'S BASEMENT

My Grandpa has been passed away for almost two years, and I am finally getting around to cleaning his basement. My Grandpa did not like to get rid of anything, so with the help of Nave we cleaned the basement. The total project took us 130 man hours over the course of 7 days. My Grandpa's 102 year old vacant farm mansion is finally getting the TLC it deserves.

Cole The Cornstar, aka Cole, is a 4th generation family farmer from Central Iowa who is the life force behind his family’s 1,700 acre farm. Cole promotes agriculture by filming his day-to-day adventures with his Dad (Daddy Cornstar) and brother (Cooper) on the farm. With a lot of help from Daddy Cornstar, Cole instills humor and education into his videos fit for both young adults and adults. Despite being 22-years old, Cole has an old-fashion work ethic with an innovative approach toward agricultural technology and practices. Cole's mission is to prove the American Dream is not dead and be a megaphone for agricultural education and innovation, from technological advances in farming equipment to conservation practices.

Cole, you exhaust me, just by watching you! I must admit, however, that you have also motivated me to clean up my own little farm. The previous owners basically left everything behind, as they were downsizing. Now, I am the one who gets the pleasure of sorting, and going thru everything. Your suggestion of breaking it down to smaller tasks/areas is good, as I am totally overwhelmed, when I look at all that needs to be done. You are an awesome young man!! Thank you for your inspiration, infectious smile, and wonderful attitude. God is truly GOOD!!!

Your Grandpa probably ended up with a bunch of stuff from your Great Grandpa that ended up in the basement (or maybe the attic...) The thing about cleaning out someone’s house when they’re gone is that each of those things was important to them at one point. They went to some trouble to find it, collect it, bring it home, store it, and probably move it five times! ;-) It’s kind of sad to see it all go, but it has no purpose for you now so it is time.

So, Cole, are those “safety toe” flip flops y’all are wearing to clean that cellar?🙂 By the way, I wanted to caution you about cleaning the attic with all that bird manure in it. That stuff can contain some nasty bacteria so you might want to hire a professional or at least get yourself a good respirator and a hazmat suit.

That is a terrible idea. DO NOT PAINT BASEMENT WALLS. Moisture gets into the blocks and can escape thru the inside wall. A dehumidifier takes care of moisture. Paint prevents the moisture from leaving the block, causing it to saturate the block and freeze in the winter. Have seen whole walls crumble within 10 years of painting. LEAVE THEM BARE.

I like the station nugget noggin too. He is a wholesome country boy growing into a man but he does metal detecting and dives. He is a good station to put on for the children, just like this one. Children need real role models like these young men.

Hey Cole, here's a hint for opening tool box drawers like at the 3:48 mark -- close all the drawers before opening the next one. It's a safety feature so the box doesn't tip due to the weight.

Basement... power wash, sealer on the cement and then some light neutral color on the walls. A circle of bright color with a tag labeling every shut off valve (gas, water, power main) with a laminated schematic showing where they all are at the foot of the stairs.Label all the breakers in the box. All easy to do while the rooms are empty, a real pain when there not. Your energy is amazing. Great job.

I can't wait to see what is in the attic. Wonderful to see you kids cleaning this basement and sorting out yeas of collecting things that may come in handy later. When I saw the windows I thought a sunroom project on the patio deck would be awesome at this beautiful old house. I loved the comment on Bob Ross.. Love is in the air with you two and this cleaning, and sorting challenge..... Great job dude and dudette..
