Classroom Management Snip The Clipcharts

Hey ya'll! This video is all about snipping those awful clip charts (that don't work). I believe clip charts are so negative and they don't fix negative behaviors. Check out what I do instead. Thank you for watching!

I was in a school that required the clip chart...I made it a positive thing because I had more ways to "go up" than to go down. My goal was to tell a child to "clip up" (positive) 4 more times than clipping down. I used it as a reminder to myself to notice the good in my classroom. I always searched for reasons to help that struggling student to "clip up". I found that I didn't need it very long. I was always looking for good and my students rose to the occasion. I had way less behavior problems...basically you are right! Ha ha when I looked for positive things I found it. We need to be loving these babies and looking for the good. Keep spreading your good!

I became a behavior specialist for this very reason. No student wants to be difficult by nature. I want to get to the root of why my babies are hurting and misbehaving. Love this!! Love You! 😘

Ms. May, your videos are gift to me. God is using you to give me hope. I have been teaching for over 20 years and the last two months have been the most chaotic and frustrating in my career. Until I started watching your videos, I began to develop symptoms of physical and emotional burnout. Still not out of the weeds yet, but there is light.

My daughter had clip charts in Kindergarten. My daughter was diagnosed with severe anxiety and a communication disorder. She constantly had her clip moved up and she was so discouraged with school. She said she could never do anything right and was always crying. The clip chart is horrible! I took her out school and home schooled because of it. She is in first grade now and in a different school that doesn't do clip charts. She loves it and she is excelling academically.

@@OneFABTeacher it is absolutely horrible! So thankful this teacher realized how ridiculous it is. Public Shaming these young children . My son who was diagnosed severe ADHD inattentive w autistic tenancies in 1 grade started to get called horrible names bc he was that child that was always clipping down bc he cldnt stop making noises. One child got took into Foster Care bc his mom was beating him with an extension cord when he clipped down.. Most the parents at pickup will pause on the phone just enough to ask what color the child was on.. then go BK tlkn on the phone.. hardly any parents told their kids good afternoon, I love you I missed you all day.. How was your day? It was usually what color? Ohhh really you getting it when you get home.. I use your chart and this year started writing messages on the back of their card about an area in which they’ve really grown or something I love about them. They love it and it’s a great way for them to see the progress they’ve made throughout the year! For example: “So proud of you! You are such a helpful friend and a hard worker.”

I thank God for teachers like you. My mom moved away when I was just 7 years old and I came to school everyday angry at the world. Some kids do not understand how to process and express their emotions. In my family we were always told to "stay in a child's place." I missed my mom at first and when I realized she was not coming back I grew angry. You understand Maslow's hierarchy of needs and that is so important.

Miss May, thank you SO much for this video. You and I have a very similar classroom management philosophy, so your practical tips fit in very well for me! I was that student who rarely got into trouble, and when I had to "flip my card" (a similar system to the clip charts), I would be inconsolable for the rest of the day, which definitely disrupted my learning. I've talked with people about my classroom management philosophy, and sometimes they'll say, "Oh, but you're coddling the kids too much, they need to be prepared for the real world." First of all, what real world are you talking about? Does your boss publicly punish you? If so, maybe you should change jobs! Secondly, children are children, they're still figuring out the world! I don't think I should punish them (especially publicly) for every single little mistake they make. Thirdly, I feel like one of the most important aspects of my job is to be a great model for the students. I want to model how to be a good and understanding person. If I talk with them about their issues and sympathize with them, then not only does that help them with their short-term problems, but it also gives them the tools to be a truly wonderful adult in the future.

Hello, Miss May. I am an Elementary Education major and I am in the interning stage. I too fell victim of having to utilize the behavior management chart in the classroom that I was interning in. I had to tell a good model student to flip down and my heart just sank. The student was on the verge of tears and I just ended up letting that student off with a warning. By the end of the day, I felt like the behavior chart was full of negative aspects and that it in return made me feel like a terrible teacher. I no longer feel that way knowing that there is a chart that encourages positive behavior from my students and it also scaffolds their growth mindsets too. So, thank you for this wonderful post!

Hey, I know that knowledge is important so if someone is not knowledgable about the way they can negatively impact a child, they will implement this in their classroom. Too, some see these clip charts all colourful and pretty and also see others using it and think it’s appropriate but when you look deeply you realize that they are not. I’ve heard people say they will not change this in their classroom as others stressed the importance to them of doing so. Not sure what it will take for them to change their ways but I surely will not make that mistake and will guide as many others to not do the same. I heavily agree with your points and more people should see this video because as you would have mentioned, there is more to the students behaviour and sometimes people tend to forget. I LOVE when you emphasised that point and it needs to be something we think about first rather than labeling a student etc. Thanks! Though this video is a couple years ago it will stay relevant1!

I agree whole heartedly with you about clip charts!! I'm so glad another teacher is saying this out loud!! I thought I was alone!! I long term and daily subbed for years....and HATED the clip charts so much. I vowed to not use them if I ever got my own classroom,,I'm thrilled to finally have my own room this year and will not be using a clip chart. Last year when I had to use one, I had several children who just were heartbroken when they couldn't clip up daily which confirmed my feelings on the clip chart.

One FAB Teacher She really is! I've been incredibly blessed with the 2 most wonderful parents God made! And I'll let you in on something - My parents believed that learning should never cease during the summer break. So I still had "lessons" and even homework during the summers. HATED that back then! But LOVE that they did it now. I always went back to school in the Fall ahead of my peers and having not lost what I'd learned the year before. So many of my peers had to spend the first few weeks trying to remember what we'd already learned. My parents also taught me the love of reading from Day 1. Can't even tell you how much that's helped me through the years!

After all these years, I still remember a particular event with this kid in my class. He was extremely stressed about the cards and one time he and I were whispering and we had to move our cards. Hey @SarahhFeddyy I was JUST thinking how I can use this in conjuctionn with ClassDojo as well (my school is a PBIS school and ClassDojo is mandatory)! I was thinking along with the "random" Hey I noticed Hannah sitting on her learning spot and ready to learn...that the students will get a golden star for every 5 or 10 Dojo points that they earn as well. I just printed out the Improvement Wall and I can't wait to introduce it on Monday morning during our Community gathering! I can't tell you how many times I have heard kids have said "She already calling my mama so what I'm gone be good for" Some of these kids were in my class or in other teachers class. That mindset really bothered me so I stopped altogether. I allowed my students to move back up which also had backlash at times. SO I am very appreciative for this new positive chart!!!!!!!

I love your videos. I found you during my classroom management class while earning my bachelor's degree in elementary education. I also used your videos as part of my clinical experience hours during covid-19. Our college accepted video watching instead of going into classrooms. I love how you manage classrooms, how you use positivity in your class to motivate children. I want to ask, can you do a video on children who crave attention positive or negative. These children drain the energy from the teacher. I can not talk to other students, adults or parents or this child is at my hip, tapping my leg, acting out or not using gentle hands just to draw my attention. Help. I appreciate you and all you are blessed to share. Thank you so much. I teach pre-kindergarten while earning my bachelors at age 54.

I really like that concept and I'm glad that I found your video introducing it to me. I teach preschool children and I had to fight to do my behavior chart a different way this year. I have to continually answer for my choice to not use a treasure box. Now of course I have all this crud that I end up giving out as gifts maybe biweekl or on celebration days. I am definitely going to examine this concept further and modify it so that it is age appropriate and so that it best supports the objectives that I'll have for my class this next school year. Great work, Ms. May.

I absolutely love this!! Your video was right on time! I've never actually used a clipchart in my clasroom. I was just having that conversation today about them being embaressing. I've taught preschool for the past 3 years which is how I've gotten away with not using clipcharts, but this year I'm moving to first grade and knew I needed do find an alternative. I was going to use class dojo and only give points...I don't believe in taking my students points after they've earned them. I'm also not a fan of treasure chests full of cheap trinkets either so I hadn't yet figured out how my students were going to be rewarded. I can't wait to use this method of classroom management in my classroom! Thank you!

Courtney Banks Check out Seusstastic's coupon system on TPT or read about it on her blog. They are AH-MAZING! No need to buy cheap toys for a treasure box when you can reward your students with cool things like lunch bunch and stinky feet. :) Personally I think they're a lot more motivating to kids than getting a pencil or eraser top. Our students deserve to be recognized/praised in front of their peers and I truly believe that coupons do the trick. Best of luck!

Thank you Miss May for introducing this concept. This video was spot on! The clip chart system is ineffective in my classroom. I noticed a trend among the students. Overall, the same students always seemed to end up on the same colors day after day. I often felt uneasy about the public humiliation the clip chart caused when a student had to lower their clip. I will be using the super improver wall in my classroom this year and I'm SUPER excited 😊 about it! I will say that the clip chart was a tool designed with the thought to help with classroom management, however, it made matters worse. But now that I know better I will do better. I will bring this idea up to my principal and colleagues at our professional development meeting prior to the start of school. Thanks again.

PREACH THIS!! In 4th grade, I had to flip my card (pretty much the same as clip chart) so I could go to the bathroom. Too many kids went to bathroom during class, so if we wanted to go, the student teacher made us flip our card. I had never flipped my card before, so I tried to not even use the bathroom. I waited until I was literally about to have an accident in class, and finally decided to just flip my card. I cried for almost an hour because I was a good kid and didn’t ever want to flip my card. I was embarrassed and felt like I did something wrong. I’ve always been against clip charts, but every classroom I substitute in has them!! I’m so happy to hear SOMEONE agree with me!

I agree so much with this!! I was using a bucket filling philosophy in my pre-K classroom where I added star and heart sticks to their buckets when they made good choices. We talked about ways to fill buckets and how it felt when their buckets were dipped in, but there was a larger emphasis on filling and positivity. How would I implement this in an older classroom such as 2nd grade??

I love using natural consequences in the classroom. I thought about using a clip chart in the classroom, but as I did my research and I felt that it would not work in the classroom especially since it is very visual. As teachers, we are there to provide the most comfortable and motivating environment possible for our students, and we cannot do that if we are hurting their self-esteem. Thank you for keeping it real and may God continue to bless you! 😀

Oh, Miss May preach!!! I just adore ur teaching style & ur a teacher after my own heart. I tossed that whole clip business 6 years ago b/c I felt it focused on the negative. I do something similar to this but I also do teacher love note to my students which I saw on Pinterest. I put a specific note on their desk about something great I've seen along w/a fancy pencil as reward & keep track so by the end of the year everyone has received a few. Kids are so proud & excited to find them on their desks. I like to do it during specials or lunch so that when they come back they're surprised. I also do behavior reports just for those that need it but I try to make those positive too & they have the opportunity to get a great note home or learn what they still need to work on. I love ❤️ ur teaching style & when I have a bad day I'll be watching a Miss May video to remind me of why I love to teach!! Prayers & blessings😇

I agree wholeheartedly! I never did a clip chart, but I had a stoplight system years ago. Mine looked JUST LIKE YOURS except there was no top section. It worked similarly and after reflection, I decided that it was a shaming system rather than a management system back then. NO MORE! Only praise and positive reinforcement. I am a firm believer in speaking with the student privately when a situation arises. I also believe in natural consequences. I LOVE Whole Brain Teaching. I use that in my room as well. I've never tried the Super Improver Wall. I have got to get this ready for my classroom! I'm glad I just changed my ink! LOL! My poor laminator...Ha ha! Love and hugs, my friend! Miss May, I just found your channel and watch it on my lunches as a parapro. I stopped teaching in the classroom full time in 2015 after only three years of full time teaching . I was so burnt out and chasing perfection like you mentioned in your other videos. I am wishing you well because I see that you are in Texas! Can you do a video on tips for being firm in 3-5 grades as a substitute and any tips/hacks. I love subbing because I've been a teacher before and know expectations , but LOVE the peace I have with choosing my schedule and feeling appreciated and valued for being a "great sub" and giving the teachers peace while they are away. However, the talking back and trying me can be difficult. I'd love to get your perspective!

I'm not convinced with Dojo either. So glad you watched and found something you may find useful. ((H U G S))

I Luv this Miss May! I agree that the clip chart just makes the student agitated and opens the door for others to start acting out. The older kids need a system like this to bring out more positive behavior. Great video!

+Queen de la Classroom thank you sunshine!! I so agree with you. I truly believe in natural consequences when negative behavior comes up. (( H U G S ))

I won't be starting the year in my classroom yet so until then I'll be subbing. Do you think it would be helpful to use something like this but smaller when subbing? I'm trying to find ways to help encourage positive student behavior as a substitute teacher in middle & high school. Thanks

Future teacher here, and I just have to say I love, Love, LOVE this behavior management system! The clip chart sounds like a good idea until you begin to question it logically! All it does it show off who is bad and the embarrassment can be so detrimental to a child! I will definitely try to implement this system or a similar version in my classroom someday!

I'm back as of last Monday! We have 3 weeks of training and PDs. Didn't even start prep yet. This is my 2nd year of teaching Kindergarten and I plan to do a lot more work and development in classroom management.

Thank you for sharing!! I feel the same regarding clip charts. As a new teacher, you don't know what to do, so you default to whatever system seems familiar. I think it's part of the learning curve as a new teacher. I do know that Whole Brain Teaching changed me. I am lucky enough to live in the area where WBT trainings used to happen all the time, so I kept going and going. It was amazing to go to the trainings. I learned so much, and it improved me as a teacher. I have never gotten to the point of using the Super Improvers wall. Thank you for sharing the files. They are cute! I will try them this coming year!

I understand defaulting to whatever system is familiar. I was there once. I LOVE Whole Brain Teaching. It's such a fun and positive way to teach kids. Thank you for watching. ((HUGS))
