CLASSROOM CHANGES FOR NEXT YEAR || 5th grade teacher advice

I want to make some classroom changes for next year in 5th grade. As a teacher, I reflect a lot on what I'm doing. Each year, I keep a running list of all the things I want to do differently the next year. Now's the time that I'm starting to look over what I want to change in my classroom and how I want to do that. Let me know in the comments some of the best changes you made to your classroom or ideas you have!

Classroom job suggestion: Last school year, I made locker job descriptions for students. This helped to serve as a reminder for their responsibility. If you will have the jobs change, have the students return the magnetic job descriptions and then you can pass them out again.

For reward system. I pass out tickets as I see expected behaviors. I hang pockets or zip locks on the wall with rewards. They can put only some tickets in, split between bags, or all in one bag throughout the week. Then on Fridays I pull tickets raffle style (they write their name on the back before dropping in the reward bags) and the people I pull get that reward the following week. Examples are - bring a small stuffed animal each day the next week No shoes in the classroom Use the alternative seating at their desk It could be anything. Then I just throw the tickets out. They can collect and save into the next week to have a better chance of winning, etc. I pull more than 1 person for each reward.

I love that system! Do you have to keep making/buying tickets then since you’re throwing them away?

For class jobs, fifth grade is definitely old enough to fill out job applications. A great way to practice writing skills. You could make a classified ad describing the jobs so they could understand some skills needed for the job and why they would be a good hire. Obviously they would get “paid”- math ! I am pretty sure I saw this on a teacher tuber channel too. Have a great year!!

Oh my gosh, yes!! This is something I definitely have considered, as well! Maybe a trial period where they can try each job, and then apply for what they want/are skilled in.

Fifth grade is when I learned how to write checks! Maybe paying for prizes and incentives can be through fake checks, and you could pay with a little form that tells how many classroom "dollars"they earned that pay period?

Fifth grade is my favorite! I taught fifth for 13 years, and by far it was the best ever. Jobs-I just went down the class list and assigned jobs in chunks. For example, if I had 8 jobs, students #1-8 had the jobs first, then students 9-16 get them next go around, and so on. Notebooks-Yes, you must model, explicitly teach, remodel, and reteach how you want the notebooks to be utilized. I would not allow them to skip pages. I always had my notebook/journal I did with them that I kept for students who were absent. We always had a title, date, lesson objective, and corresponding chapter and lesson number from the textbook. And a different notebook for each subject, each subject has their own color. Same with folders. I always printed labels using a fun font, with a fun clip art, with student names, subject, and my name on the label. For example: Suzy Smith Math Journal (or notebook, or folder) Ms. Wademan’s class If I had students store these items in cubbies or their desks, I always put labels on the bottom right of the front cover. If these items are going to be stored in a plastic magazine bin or a crate, I would put the labels on the top right corner. And everyone’s math journal would all be the same color, red, and so would their folder.

For a reward system, I gave each student a point chart with 20 spaces. They were responsible to keep the point charts. I would print 4 on a page and leave them in a tray for them to pick one up when they needed. They could earn points for homework, positive behavior, games played in class, etc., whatever skill you want to work on. When the chart was filled, they put their charts in a container by my desk (important to keep it by you). At the end of the week, we’d have a raffle and I would pull 5-7 charts from the container and those kids would be able to get a prize from the bin. The kids knew that their chances for being selected increased by the number of charts they submitted they were limited to 3 a week so the kids wouldn’t hoard them and try to put a bunch in at once). They were allowed only one win per week. It always worked out that every child would eventually get their name pulled by the end of the year. This worked very well for my 5th and 6th graders and was a nice to do it on Friday afternoons (they can get a little excited, good to send them home right after :). It also helps keep the number of prizes at a reasonable level because I bought them with my own money and 5-7 prizes a week was doable. Oh, and all remaining charts were thrown away after the raffle so we could start fresh on Monday. And charts with no name were automatically disqualified. Having tried all kinds of incentives/rewards, this system worked best for me and required minimum prep. Have a great year!!

One thing that has helped me teach routines is using some kind of a sequence chain. A graphic organizer where you have 4-6 boxes to tell what goes first second third fourth fifth sixth. Think about it in your mind and then write it in the boxes on poster board or chart paper. And be specific. One thing that I want to try for next year, is include pictures. Pictures of what it should look like, and what it should not look like. For those visual learners that really need to see what it looks like. I have even seen videos of teachers saying that they get the kids to mess up someplace take pictures then have them clean it and take pictures again. I think I might try that this year.

Seating, normally I have all the seats face the front of the room for the first month. Every year during the first week(2-3 days) of school, I let the students choose their own seats. Then I observe them. It's so funny because they tell on themselves. Then the beginning of the second week, I make a seating chart based on my observations. Nothing is set in stone. We stay in the same formation for 4-6 weeks unless they drive ME crazy. I'll have 5th grade this year. Maybe by the end of the first quarter, I'll let them choose with certain parameters. Plus, I will be departmentalized so I'll be making 2 seating charts

I was a sub and watched a 6th grade teacher use a deck of cards to use as a seating chart. He seperated red from black. All the black cards were laid out at the seated position. He stood by the door and had each student pick a card, face down. When the student came in the room they needed to find the corisponding card. He changed them once a quarter. The students actually liked this system. They also did not feel like the "teacher" was picking for them.

Some things I ask my parents are: Does the child have siblings? Do they consent to their child being photographed filmed?(The school doesn't always share that with teachers.) What is the most important thing they want me to know about their child to help them be successful?

I love your ideas! My team and I saw the same problem with notebooks in second grade. Our plan as of right now is to hot glue or tape a piece of ribbon to the inside back of the notebooks. This way students could use the ribbon-like a bookmark.

I make a list of thinking and doing activities. Thinking activities allow the students to talk others (solving math problems, sharing work, practicing reading aloud, etc). Doing activities require no talking( putting away papers, taking out materials, forming a line, putting up chairs, etc) and this helps qith classroom flow. You might want to use a simple book marker so that kids do not go and skip pages when they are writing or pasting materials in their notebooks. I hope that you are enjoying your summer vacation.

Data bin. I totally understand what you're saying. It's been a struggle for me too. Ironically, my master's degree was non-traditional assessments including portfolios. When I was getting my degree, every Friday the kids would get all their papers and work I gave them a worksheet or a half sheet and they would pick their best work or the work that they were most proud of or learn the most and then they would write why they would attach it to that and then they would put it inside the file folder. And then I might pick something else and put it in there then they could take everything else home. So if they're responsible for doing that it takes a little bit off of you. And that year I had second graders. In my new current School, they said they're going to give us time and materials to have portfolios of some kind. Because this school does student-led conferences. So it behooves them to give us what we need. That's the only thing I can share with you. Have the kids help you. Maybe even make it a job.???

I've never heard of Bridget's math. Most of the schools around here use Eureka Math. But what I would say is using Ziploc bags snack size for little things sandwich size for a little bit bigger gallon-size for you know things that you need that are bigger. And one thing that I noticed about common core and the eight mathematical practices is making sure the students know what the materials are, know how to use them, and have them available. We always tell our students it's what your brain likes. You might be doing place value of some sort, but they don't necessarily want to use base 10 blocks. They might use something else. What I would recommend is instead of keeping them in one big closet somewhere or centralized place. Perhaps you can have satellite zones. For instance if you have a set of seats of four students. Have some kind of or tub or drawer to keep the materials near those students. And make one for the rest of the tables or areas. You teach the students each kind of manipulative one at a time. For instance you have them explore or play with them. Then you show them how to use them properly. Then they use them. Then you ask them what they learned or experience. Then you teach them how to clean them up. And you do that with each manipulative they have. The first part of the year is learning what the manipulatives are. And the rest of the year is having them to use them. That's what I was thinking

I remember once I was a teacher assistant to another teacher, and what she did for jobs was she used library book card envelopes. She put them on a closet door I did something similar on a poster board. So you put the different jobs on them. The kids get a tongue depressor not the thin popsicle sticks, the thicker sticks.write their names on the top, and they can decoratethem without blocking the name. I had a class list and the kids' names.I would put the jobs above and then I would put the month that they had the job. We had almost enough jobs for all the kids but I think there might have been like three a month that would be "on vacation". And that's how we kept track. It was monthly. I've heard of people doing it for a whole quarter .I think that's too long. Once a week that's too short even two weeks is too short. I think a month is just enough. And they will get through many of the jobs that are available.
