Classification of Signals Explained | Types of Signals in Communication

Ғылым және технология

In this video, the classification of the signals from the communication engineering perspective is explained with examples.
By watching this video, you will learn the following topics:
0:00 Introduction
0:57 Continuous-time signal and Discrete-time signal
1:48 Analog and Digital Signal
4:06 Periodic and Aperiodic Signal
4:52 Energy and Power Signal
9:26 Deterministic and Random Signal
Classification of Signals:
In the general the signal can be classified in the following categories:
1) Continuous-time signal and Discrete-time signal
2) Analog and Digital Signal
3) Periodic and Aperiodic Signal
4) Energy and Power Signal
5) Deterministic and Random Signal
1) Continuous-time signal and Discrete-time signal
Continuous-time signal:
If the signal is specified for every value in time then it is known as the Continuous-time signal
Discrete-time signal:
If the signal is specified only for discrete-time instances then it is called Discrete-time signal.
2) Analog and Digital Signal:
Analog Signal:
A signal whose amplitude can take any value in the continuous range is the analog signal.
Digital Signal:
A signal whose amplitude can take only a finite number of values is the digital signal.
3) Periodic Signal and Aperiodic Signal
Periodic Signal: The signal which repeats itself after some finite time is known as a periodic signal.
4) Energy and Power Signal:
The signal with finite energy is known as the energy signal while the signal with finite power is known as Power Signal.
The signal could be either an energy signal or a power signal, but it can't be both at the same time.
There are some signals (e.g ramp signal) which are neither energy nor power signals
5) Deterministic and Random Signal:
A signal whose physical description is known completely either in mathematical form or graphical form is known as the Deterministic Signal.
A signal which is known only in terms of the probabilistic description like mean, mean square value, and distributions is known as the Random Signal.
In this video, the classification of the different signals is explained with examples.
This video will be helpful to everyone in understanding the classification of the signals.

Great video!but at 8:52 if we integrate between -T/2 and T/2 and divide the energy by T and take limit tends to infinity (just like the definition of power states) we get infinity, I don't think this signal is finite power signal, but the signal at 4:23 is finite power based on the definition. Please rectify if I am wrong

@6:22 you said the time average is taken at an infinitely large interval but its actually taken over just 1 time period right?

At 8:06 , the energy and power that we are finding using the defined formulas are not equal to the conventional energy and power signals. Here, we use Energy and power to just find the size of signal. so the unit of energy cannot be joules

Square wave you have shown is not a digital signal but analog. Digital signal can not have -ve value. Plz check.

When we say digital signal we usually have perception that it is varying between 0 to 5V, because all our logic circuits typically works on two voltage level. But it's not always true. When we say a digital signal, it has discrete voltage levels. Its not always necessary to be a positive. One positive and one negative voltage is also considered as digital signal. ( As far as two voltage levels are different) I hope it will clear your doubt. This is very basic but someone may ask in interview.
