I dedicated MONTHS to learning this song a few years ago. And while I technically could play it, I didn't understand what was going on musically. It was basically just a party trick. I had no way to translate the practice into anything else. I also realized I still didn't sound nearly as good as Mr. Emmanuel here because I lacked something crucial that I never considered. Dynamics. I was only focused on playing the right notes on time and never had any real feeling behind what I was playing. In short it just sounded boring. It's amazing how you can improve your own playing in ways you didn't expect just by hearing the greats play. I'll never be better than Tommy, but I can be better than I was last week.

Yeah, stage one is to just memorize the 5million-note sequences. The dynamics will usually bring themselves in unconsciously over time, after you've gotten comfortable with not having to constantly think about where your hand has to be next. It carries over into other songs, though, for sure. You learn something that tough and then go back and play an easy song you know, and you'll play the easy one 10× smoother than before

While I agree that it was some amazing guitar work, and Tommy is talented, I think you are understating the significance of what he did when you called it a nice "twist". This isn't a "twist" at all, it's a completely different song. Sure it has some of the same notes, but the feeling of the song, the soul of it, is far removed from the original. I, personally, would of felt better if he renamed it and put an "inspired by Classical Gas" subtitle. I say this because i was searching for Classical Gas, clicked on this video because it looked interesting and polished, and get this jarring, completely unexpected piece. It was a lot like drinking what I though was soda, and it's lemonade. Lemonade isn't bad, just so unexpected it almost hurts.

A lot of people talk about how incredible a guitarist he is and he certainly is that, but the thing I’m most impressed with is his control. That man knows every square nanometer of that neck and that’s why he’s playing is so clean. I’m in awe of that guy’s control.

Midnight Austin The difference is execution. It’s one thing to have a great, unique sound and being able to play it well. Jimmi Hendrix had a unique sound and style, but his playing was incredibly sloppy. Tommy Emmanuel may not have a super unique sound, but his execution is flawless.
