Classical Construction Part 9: Bracing the Back

Музыка

In this segment I brace the Brazilian rosewood guitar back, using very old Honduras mahogany for the three braces. The video concludes with fitting the back to the sides in preparation for gluing them together in the next segment.

Great find with the mahogany. Upcycling is great also.

Mahogany is a bit more Hygroscopic & won't be as prone to seasonal Humidity changes. You are the first person I've heard to mention also using Spruce for back bracing.

Spruce works quite well for back braces. It is a little bit lighter weight, if that is a concern.

Your mahogany center strip is not cross grain correct? Rather quarter sawn along the length. I have been using cross grain spruce for this. What are your thoughts? Thank you.

The grain of the mahogany runs perpendicular to the seam. It wouldn't provide much support if it was parallel. I use spruce as often as mahogany, and sometimes cedar. They all seem to work well for back braces.

@@zimnickiguitars311 Is the mahogany used for the center strip different from the old reclaimed mahogany from the house? If so I imagine scarf joints are used to get the length cross grain and if so again, do you make individual center strips or do you make them in bulk and cut them down? I have a lot of scrap mahogany species that I found and am fantasizing of a 24" cross grain board with 12 scarf joints to cut center strips from. The glueup turns it into a nightmare though.

@@StinkyParadox I make just one center strip at a time. The mahogany I used for this strip was not from the house, it was a cutoff from a back, so there were only one or two joints.
