In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm returning to the music of American Heavy Metal band Slipknot with their 2014 song The Devil in I. I'm finally starting to truly understand the marriage of intense music for intense feelings. These guys were processing the untimely death of one of their fellow band members, and this song was part of their healing process. It's intense, and some of the images are quite graphic. Come along for the journey!

Two things about the video. One is the gruesome things being done to them; most are their real fears. Shawn Crahan reveals the idea behind The Devil In I video is to become one with your past devils then to do away with them. Sid Wilson eats his own hands and fingers so he can no longer DJ, Chris Fehn (who has a genuine fear of birds) chose to be eaten alive by crows. The second is that the ones having things done to them are their old masks symbolizing that they have to move past what once was. Those versions of them are dead (literally in the case of the video) with Paul being gone and that they can't ever be the same again. They are accepting to be what they are now making new music by performing the song with their new masks which mirrors the point of the song; moving past the grief.

Great summary. One other neat fact is that the two being stabbed in the wheelchairs were the two new members essentially being "jumped" into the band.

The video is the guys all facing their own fears which I dig as a concept. It really highlights Corey and Jim’s fear of explosions. Corey kills the previous version of himself, when he’s sitting at the table he’s wearing his old outfit.

Back in the day, if I needed to get caught up on my production at my shop, I would put 'Slipknot' on my CD player at a pretty high volume. Worked every time. I can't imagine how insane it would be to see them live.

I gotta admit, I love seeing you really get into metal songs these days. You've come so far with metal Doug, compared to where you started. Often the more brutal the images, the more serious the message behind the song. This is still one of my favorite Slipknot songs. Also since you mentioned not liking that harsh vocals, it took me several years to learn to like harsh vocals. I loved the music so I kept listening. Now I love the harsh vocal styles as well as cleans. One day it just clicked. Look at harsh vocals as another instrument, not singing, and it will make more sense.

Joey was a very important drummer. He did what I'd dreamed of, but lacked the talent. He incorporated drum and bugle corps style line drumming, with it's incredible aggression and unbelievable perfection, into thrash metal. I was fortunate to play Everquest with Paul once. Spent the afternoon playing my Enchanter with his Wizard. What a team. 🤟🧙‍♂️🤟 Rich the Ancient Metal Beast

I feel like there can be drawn parallels between their magnum opses, Charging the Void and Recharging the Void and Rush's Cygnus Book I & II due to the lyrics, at least.

Hey Doug. I've noticed that you haven't really been getting many new bands on metal mondays, and I was hoping I could provide some suggestions for you to really get deeper into what metal has to offer. I'm gonna stick to some more proggy bands because that's what you seem to enjoy the most Vektor - A progressive thrash metal band, I would reccommend anything off of the album "Terminal Redux" Wilderun - Kind of like Opeth except more symphonic and more folky elements, I would reccomend anything off the albums "Veil of Imagination" or "Epigone," and they're more of a band where it'll be better to listen to the whole album Atheist - Pretty much the birthplace of technical death metal. Lots of time signature changes and jazzy harmonies coupled with good old death metal. I would reccomend anything off the album "unquestionable presence" Death - Widely considered to be the first death metal band. Their later albums have lots of prog elements. I would reccomend anything off the album "symbolic," or "voice of the soul" if you want a beautiful instrumental Hope you decide to look at some of thse bands or just explore more metal in general.

It's kinda fucked honestly how they pay so much respect to Paul (okay that sounds wrong lol, that's not what I mean, hear me out), who died of an overdose, and then they kicked Joey out of the band for still having drug problems, and now he's dead too. Like, shouldn't they have shown him some support too? But it seems instead, they saw his drug use as disrespectful to Paul. Which makes sense. Kinda. I guess they never liked Joey as much as Paul... that's probably what it comes down to in the end.

I hear you here. However, as a recovering heroin addict, I was absolutely unreliable, totally untrustworthy, irresponsible, self centered, selfish, etc. I can’t imagine someone trying to work with me, write with me, tour with me, I’m sure they tried everything before saying “we just can’t do it dude.” I’ve read interviews and articles and stuff about how the parting went down and I think there was a lot of shitty, unreliable behavior before that parting. Sad, all of it really

I like 'em live, because they do a great stage show and the music is very approachable and headbangable / moshable. Some of the songs are alright, but mostly it's just the live performances that interest me about them. There's something very clinical and corporate about them I don't enjoy. They present this image of brotherhood and community, but they're not above backstabbing one another either. They fired Joey and recently Jay for example. The members have talent but Slipknot is more brand than band, in my view.

KZread is so full of "trained" musicians reacting to metal bands. It seems as though metalheads need validation that they're listening to good music. I don't get it. Does it sound good to you? Do you feel anything when you listen to the song? If so, why do you need an expert's opinion? I could start a KZread channel and label myself an expert "jazz drummer", react to all the bands mentioned in the comments, and I would never say "this band sucks" because I'd lose followers. In fact, I've never come across a video where a trained musician says a band is terrible, even when reacting to death metal songs that many would label as "noise" in real life. I know many trained musicians, and I am a metal musician myself. But if you need these videos to feel validated about your music choices, good for you!
