#queen #queenreaction
In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm coming back to Queen's 2nd album to finally complete my full album listen. Today, it's the White Side, with four songs by Brian May and a song by Roger Taylor. I loved hearing all of these songs for the first time, and I hope you enjoy my listen through this album side!

One final note in my Queen filibuster... These early Queen albums were all recorded on SPEC TIME at Trident Studios. Middle of the night, a couple hours here and there when bands cancelled... it was pure desire, undaunted belief in the unprecedented music they were making... amazing. I still treasure Doug's "WTF" reaction to "My Fairy King"... because that was EVERYONE's reaction back in the day. The small cadre of us lucky enough to discover this band before the dam broke shared an immersive experience pretty much unparalleled by anything since.

Your discussion of the White Queen/Black Queen song pairing recalled a 40+ year-old memory from high school. We were heavy into D&D in those days, and my friend designed an adventure using this album, the premise being that our characters would hear the various songs in taverns or courts and the lyrics held clues about what was really going on. The climactic twist was when we discovered the White Queen we had allied with to recover her kingdom had a split personality and was also the Black Queen we were fighting when possessed by the evil spirit. I later returned the favor with a scenario that required the adventurers to visit the Court of the Crimson King beyond the Point of Know Return.

Queen II, my favorite! And many years ago, Brian said it was his as well… Queen is a great band to go and listen to album by album because with each album they evolved. When you jump around their catalog, you can hear how incredibly diverse their music is. But each album for the most part has a consistent feel on its own. If I were you, I would be listening to Queen one and then jump to the third album Sheer Heart Attack. Why not go in chronological orders so you can go on the journey with Queen as they actually did, album by album, year by year.!

Interestingly, they were voted UK’s most popular band. They have beaten the Beatles. Listen to all albums before 1980. Start from Queen I and then Sheer Heart Attack. A lot of Queen fans don’t know these early albums which are a lot better than their 80’s albums.

But Side Black, Side 2, is all Freddie and contains a big favorite of mine "March of the Black Queen/Funny How Love Is". Which I watched your surprise reaction to. Thank you for this excellent video! Your detailed examination of the White Side of "Queen II" was very insightful. I appreciate the numerous background details you provided about Queen and the making of this fascinating album. While it contains few hit-worthy songs, it is truly a gem for die-hard Queen fans. The song "White Queen (As It Began)" is particularly impressive in its live version, as Freddie Mercury's additional piano performance enhances the song beautifully, something not heard in the studio version. There is a great video of this performance from the Hammersmith concert on KZread. Regarding your question about which album to review next, I suggest starting with Queen's first album and then proceeding chronologically, much like the approach taken by the channel "Virgin Rock." This would provide a comprehensive journey through Queen's discography for those interested. Thanks again for your fantastic work!

Sheer Heart Attack was my introduction to Queen. First album I ever bought and mostly because of the Mick Rock cover photography if I’m honest. From there back to Queen II, then to Queen. Can’t really go wrong with any of them to be honest but put yourself in the mindset of a 12 year old fan of a known but not yet superstar status band when all of a sudden Bohemian Rhapsody then comes out. Mind blown, but it also felt like everyone else was now in on your little secret. Personally I don’t think they ever surpassed the first three albums musically, although clearly they did find the right formula for astronomical success.

im so happy to hear this one! its my absolute favourite album ever! White Queen iis such a great piece! Its one of the few songs ive ever learnt to play in its entirety (also Ogre Battle) on guitar! White queen has an amazing live arrangement with an echo solo! I'll never get tired of hearing it!

Such a joy as ever Doug! Queen II is my favourite Queen album because I think their creative juices were flowing at maximum intensity at that time with no inhibitions. It's such a masterpiece. I would suggest that you should do the first album next and, if it's your intention to continue with full album reactions, continue with the others in chronological order so that you can see how the band evolved over time. Queen I has some exciting stuff on it, as you've already found with My Fairy King, but was also back in the day when they were pretty unknown and were without the big budget that they later became accustomed to. I believe it to be the case that the song Liar from the first album has the longest intro of any Queen song, but am more than willing to be corrected on that!

Thanx, Thanx, Thanx so much Doug for reacting/analyzing Side White of Queen 2. The stoppage and extra detail after White Queen was greatly appreciated as it is my fave track from Queen 2 and possibly my fave Queen track. So good. What a second album!!! It is also easy to see that A Night At The Opera wasn't just a fluke or one off project.

Thanks, Doug! I always enjoy your reactions. This is one of my favourite Queen albums. I think the white side is underrated. Lennon and McCartney sang their own songs so why not Brian and Roger? Queen was very democratic and Freddie had no problem letting Brian or Roger sing their own song if they sounded best doing so. They became expert at overdubbing on this album. You should either do Queen 1 or Sheer Heart Attack next. The first side of Sheer Heart Attack is absolute brilliance.

Great album. The band made full use of the studio time with some great production work. Roger Taylor's drum sound really kicks in on this album (apparently he was not happy with his drum sound on the first album). Great songwriting by May and Mercury. Taylor still learning his songwriting craft at this point. Check out See What A Fool I've Been - the B-side to Seven Seas of Rhye.
