Classical Composer Reacts to METALLICA: The Outlaw Torn (live with orchestra) | The Daily Doug

Музыка

#metallica #theoutlawtorn #metallicareaction
In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm returning to music from Metallica. The Outlaw Torn is from their album Load, and I think this is the first time I'm hearing any of their music from that album. The performance I'm hearing is from S&M1, performed with the San Francisco Orchestra. I hope you enjoy!

RIP Michael Kamen. This concert was his idea and is his legacy in the metal music. The Outlaw Torn is one of the hidden gems of Metallica (pure thrashers don't give a f about it, but their loss). James has experienced loss in his life and the fact that we still have Metallica is close to a miracle. It has been touch and go there a couple of times and the boys have all the money in the world. Financially they don't need to do this, but mentally they do... I don't know the first thing about music theory, harmonics, what key they are in, or half steps. But from my understanding, Mr. Kamen WROTE the music scores for EVERY instrument in the orchestra himself. When I listen to this concert, and how magical it sounds, I can't wrap my head around what Mr. Kamen did. Seems superhuman to me.

There's a story. He wrote the orchestrations while listening to the album versions of the songs. He then had to transpose some of them a half step down to match the guitar tuning. When rehearsing "The Call of Ktulu", one instrument, just one (I forget which one it was) was playing the old sheet music; he heard it, and called it out. Gifted beyond imagination.

This is an unpredictable band with an excellent but underrated guitarist that covers a lot of different genres of music (primary influences of pfunk, Prince, dickie betts), even on the same album. OMG. My favorite Metallica song. Shortly before they performed this in 2019 at the S&M2 concerts, they played it in Germany. It was so incredible, very emotional. James's solo at the end always sends an arrow straight through my heart. The video for the 2019 performance ends with James looking over to Kirk and Rob and they look right back at him, an incredible moment of connection between them all.

I’m so glad that a reviewer of an S&M song finally acknowledged Michael Kamen. No way this album (nor S&M 2) are as well received if not for Kamen’s compositions. And this is only a fraction of the contribution that he made to rock and metal. Seriously, Google the guy. The list of bands and artists that he worked with is a who’s who of rock and roll.

When S&M came out and I listened to it for the first time I though "hummm, the orchestra is slow, behind the band". Then I gave it a second turn, and a third, and... well, my favorite song ever in its best version is there (One). About this one in particular, the orchestra sets the ambient and the band just breaks through. I liked the original, but this is just on a level of its own. Too bad Michael Kamen didn't live to make the second one... and a third one at least, as there are songs that I would love to hear with an orchestra (ehem, Unforgiven trilogy anyone?).

If you like this one. You have to listen to Inamorata on Metallicas latest album. Now their longest song ever recorded. Just Epic.

When I was about 14/15 I had a big TV on my bedroom wall, directly over my guitar amp. I bought the DVD of this S&M concert, and I learnt it all. I would just play along pretending to be in the band. This was always one of my favourites to play because that end is just so smooth. My parents got seriously bored of hearing two hours of Metallica like twice a week lol

I think this might be my favorite arrangement on the S&M album, where the orchestra elevates the original tune. Band and orchestra totally in sync, and the vocals here are perfection.

You gotta check out Eric Clapton's performance of Layla from Royal Albert Hall 1991 with an orchestra, it was also led by Michael Kamen. Probably one of the best versions of Layla out there. Another good one to check out from those concerts is "Edge of Darkness" which was a theme for a BBC TV show of the same name, with music written by Kamen and Clapton.

Was fortunate to see Maestro Kamen play keyboards on Roger Waters first solo tour, The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking. His team recreated all of Rick's synth sounds perfectly. Ever Fliyd song sounded EXACTLY like the album, due in large part to MK. This was the only tour Rig did this. On every subsequent your, the songs were retooled by The Bleeding Hearts Band. Growing over the years into new and unique pieces that fit the current performers. I was very bummed to not be able to attend this show. When I heard that he'd written arrangements and new material with James, I was more than excited. The performance was expertly recorded, the band and orchestra working together and not fighting. Due in large part to the brilliant arrangements. You can even hear Jason! My favorite part of this video is when they cut to Jason and he's "locked in" with the guy on the string bass, just jamming. 🤘🧙‍♂️🤘 Rich the Ancient Metal Beast
