Classical Composer Reacts to MEGADETH: PEACE SELLS | The Daily Doug (Episode 752)

Музыка

#megadeth #peacesells
In this #metalmonday edition of #thedailydoug, I'm returning to the music of Megadeth and their break-out hit Peace Sells. Of the four songs by Megadeth I've heard on the channel so far, this is my favorite. The great bass line and social commentary put it over the edge for me! I hope you enjoy!

I always loved Rust in Peace's clang of bass, but it's still quite similar to this. Two killer albums even if they have quite a different touch in composition and sounds. The drums on these albums were also very enjoyable. Not very much like modern tight metal drums, more like old school rock with a lot of reverb and mushiness, but it still works well for the songs.

The place is so small it's like a living room and everyone, guests and performers hang out in the back between sets as there's no back stage. I have a CD of stuff I wrote when I was studying music theory and he actually really likes it. Every few months he tells me he was cleaning his house and he came across it and listened to it again and he still likes it. Very flattering

And he'd come back for Megadeth's "The System Has Failed" album. Vocally, Dave's snarl really works on this one. It fits the mood for sure.

My first Megadeth album and one of my favorites. Frontman Dave Mustaine recalled the writing of this song to Rolling Stone: "I was homeless at the time, and I was living in a rehearsal place in Vernon, California. I was seeing a girl, Diana - there were a lot of songs I wrote about her. I actually wrote the lyrics to that song on the wall, in that building. I didn't have any paper in the studio, but I had a Sharpie, so I just wrote on the wall. Whoever inherited our rehearsal room after I moved out, saw the original lyrics to 'Peace Sells' on the wall. They probably painted right over it and didn't even know it." According to former Megadeth guitarist Chris Poland, Dave Mustaine originally conceived this as an 8-minute piece before drummer and close friend Gar Samuelson talked him out of it. Poland told Xtreme Metal Radio: "I think originally it was eight minutes long, and Gar said, 'You know what? This is too good a song to drag it out like this. Let's shorten the arrangement, cut it down to size and make it a single.' Dave said, 'Yeah, let's do that.' I honestly think Dave respected Gar's opinion on stuff - he was the only guy in the band Dave wouldn't mess with. He totally respected Gar, and thank God he did, If Gar hadn't talked Dave into shortening the song." Mustaine also penned the opening bassline, which became famous for being used as the theme for MTV News.

I'm a 56 year little "old" lady and I still listen to it regularly (though usually in the car, as I don't want to disturb my neighbors - I did grow up a little bit ;) I remember seeing Megadeth on several occasions at both L'Amour and the Ritz in NY. Quality of the performance was always iffy as no joke, those guys were hell bent on self destruction with booze and heroin among other things, but when they were good....omg it was just beautiful blazing raw thrashing power. So glad you reviewed this one, and enjoyed it!

Is there anything better than watching classically trained musicians turn into full pledge Metal Heads? Maybe the rap and hip hop dudes turning into Metal Heads. But in either case, it's just such a joy to witness people click with the genre and start to get the whole attitude; when they start headbanging naturally because they are so into the music, that's just cool to see -- it's like YES! YOU GOT IT! The Metal community is so in love with their music and just want to share the experience they have with everyone they can. Doug, you're a blessing. I love learning the details of all of my favorite songs, and you've hit so many that I adore. Appreciate ya! I remember in high school 1999 I had just become a metal head via Metallica, and a friend of mine showed me the Peace Sells album cover, and I thought it was so cool I was like "one of these days I know that's going to be one of my favorite albums." When I had finally listened through the entire Metallica catalogue, I bought Rust in Peace and was like '....oh.....my......God!' It remains one of my fav albums some 20+ years later. Same with Peace Sells. The FIRST concert I saw was Megadeth and they closed on Peace Sells as the encore. It was freaking AWESOME! Peace!

The first two Megadeth albums were really special because Chris Poland and Gar Samuelson came from a Jazz/Fusion background (They previously played together in a Fusion band) and their musical influence combined with Dave's riffs really set Megadeth apart. "Good Mourning/Black Friday" is another song from this album worth checking out (the whole album is a masterpiece), Chris Poland's guitar solos are incredible and the lyrics are really dark and gruesome.

Supposedly this was going to be a lot more progressive and approaching 6-8 minutes in length. Then Chris Poland (IIRC) suggested cutting back to being a driving anthem song.

I heard them live for the first time last summer. And of all their raging songs, Peace Sells was by far the best for me, even though I've listened to it 100 times. The progression in this song is incredible.

I was 16 when Peace Sells came out and it was in the middle of the "hair/glam metal" era. It was interesting to watch MTV at the time and you would see Crue, Poison, Ratt, Bon Jovi videos and then this video was thrown in the mix and most people were like "WTF is this?". Definitely a great time to be alive and I still think the album Peace Sells is Megadeth's finest work

The album cover art is one of my favorites from this era ('Master of Puppets' was great, too), with Vic as a real estate agent in front of the bombed-out UN building. Dave's point about heavy metal stars not being stupid is driven home in an excruciating manner during his appearance on celebrity Rock n Roll Jeopardy! kzread.info/dash/bejne/lXWJqtWMc7m2h84.html The video quality is terrible, but it's still a must-see. Dave is such a monster.

Sup Doug! Other than changing the scene of Thrash Metal, Megadeth has also brought you a new subscriber! Yea me! lol. When this song first came out, I bought the cassette because it had a really cool album cover. Little did I know the effect it would have on me and many teens I knew at the time. Being a rebellious kid, I had no real direction on where those feelings would lead to. Music like this and Metallica could channel our anger at society and whoever we felt was holding us back. We were looked down upon for our long hair, the way we dressed and the music we banged our heads to. lol. This music was so intense that listening to it would calm the anger and help us chill. Could have been the joints also. Haha. I can remember being so pissed off and feeling the rage. I'd put on some thrash metal and crank it as loud as it could go and let the intensity burn it out. Even to this day I find Megadeth, Metallica, Pantera, Slayer and others so very calming. Given I have matured and my musical taste have broadened, it is still a blast to head bang to this, even if I can't grow the hair long anymore....WooHooo old age... Peace my friend, keep up the reactions

You're talking about the PMRC hearing and the "Filthy 15" which included artists like Twisted Sister, Madonna, ACDC, Prince, Motley Crue, Cyndi Lauper etc... but only 3 people out of the entire global music industry, took a stand against them on behalf of all artists worldwide, the recording industry and censorship. it was shocking how everyone was just willing to bend over and take. Everyone, but three people. Those three people were Frank Zappa, Dee Snider of Twisted Sister (who gave the most intelligent testimony) and John Denver who unquestionably gave the most damning testimony. Why? Because he was beloved, even though the pmrc thought his song Rocky Mountain High was about drugs (which it wasn't). John Denver compared the government before him to Nazi Germany in regards to Hitler burning books and taking away peoples rights. It shut the pmrc up real quick! Arguably the recording industry won because although the pmrc thought they won (and "technically did) by the creation of the "Parental Advisory" stickers that had to go on albums. All that did in the long run was boost those album sales. So it backfired bigtime! 🤣 If you haven't checked it out, there's a film called "Warning: Parental Advisory" that came out in 2002 about the hearing and it's great. Dee Snider plays himself, he reenacts a part of his actual speech (which is available on youtube for those interested; it's amazing!) I wish his entire testimony was in the film (all three of them really, but the cut it short for time). I remember watching the hearing live when I was 11.

Frank Zappa spent much of the last decade of his life fighting the PMRC's stupidity. He even turned parts of the senate hearing into a musical composition called "Porn Wars", included on the album FZ Meets The Mothers Of Prevention. A fascinating and disturbing piece of music. And he didn't testify before the Senate, but Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys later also became a strong voice against the push for rock censorship.

One of THE riffs of all time and maybe Mustaine´s best vocal acting ever. Clever lyrics performed perfectly in your face.

But I forced my self to listen to it again and again, after about 15 times listening to the album it clicked and now I think it's one of the greatest live metal albums hands down.
