If anyone is interested, because of this song a lot of years back all Iron Maiden members were awarded the ''golden key'' of the city of Thessaloniki (capital of Macedonia, near to the town of Pella, birthplace of Alexander) and also were given the title of ''honorary citizens'' of the municipality by the then mayor of the city!

In my opinion, one of their top 10 songs and one of the most underrated. Whenever I sit back and close my eyes and listen to this song, the intro feels kind of young and perhaps innocent- it takes me to Macedonia, watching a young ATG tame horses with Phillip. Then the military beat kicks in and you start feeling like he is getting older, his training is nearing completion and he's readying the phalanxes for battle and conquest. You can feel the despair in India as his men mutiny. I wish they could have came up with some lyrics around his golden burial. Truly an epic jam

This only confirms how interesting this music is also for classical musicians. So complex and at the same time so catchy. All these Iron Maiden songs that are 15 and more minutes long are a symphony in themselves. So many rhythm changes, so many solos...
Discovering Iron Maiden is such an interesting experience. I was always a huge Metallica fan (even though they were before my time) and some other trash music, but I never ventured into listening to Maiden . A couple years ago I was at the gym and just decided for no specific reason to listen to Maiden. I went down the typical top 10 songs in Spotify and one after another I was in complete disbelief of how great they were. I assumed these were cherry picked songs and that the albums would otherwise be mediocre. I decided to start from the very beginning (which for many more classic rock bands is not always the best place to start). I came to find out on my journey that basically every single song from their first album through seventh son is simply incredible. It's only more impressive when you come upon their body of work starting from Brave New World. I've since seen them live as well and hope to see them again. They are just spectacular in every way. Greatest heavy metal band of all time in my humble opinion.

My grandmother passed that September within days of this album release. My mom came home one day with the record and cassette because both had the logo and album title in different colors. Hey Doug, I've been an IM fan for 40 years. I absolutely love their compositions. Their first six albums were so refreshing (at the time) to listen to. I have listened to those albums hundreds of times. But I have to say, listening to you break them down like you do, makes them refreshing all over again. I sit in front of my screen wide eyed and ears open, taking all that you have to say. Adding the piano to this video only reinforces your take. Thank you for doing these! I hope you continue to "react" to more Maiden melodies.
"To Tame A Land" off of the "Piece of Mind" album released in 1983 is one of their best tracks. Also, "Powerslave" from the album of the same name, released in 1984.

I absolutely enjoyed watching you break it down.....been a fan of these guys since my teens. Thank you and hope to watch more like this👍
This solo was made for the solos. Adrian Smith (solo 1) and Dave Murray (solo 2) are so different yet complement each other so well. Both are melodic and take the listener on a journey. It's hard to determine which is best and it always seems to be the one you're listening to at that moment in time. Ultimately, I side with Murray and his fiery finish that starts at 10:00
About the lyrics and the "rap" part, Bruce said that this verse "Hellenism he spread far and wide The Macedonian learned mind Their culture was a western way of life He paved the way for Christianity Marching on, marching on" is one of hardest one's he has ever sung.

Great seeing and hearing you break down this epic song into the basic chord progressions. It makes Iron Maiden songs sound so simple!
*This is what great music does to an individual: when a composer/musician appreciates the work of individuals in other genres of music.*
It sounds totally goosebumbs when you play along. You can clearly hear that (many) Maidens songs are truly epic and classical worthy underneath the soaring heavy metal vocals and the heavy distorted guitars.
Its a great song. From a fairly underrated album. It was one the songs that turned me into a fan back in middle school.
It is absolutely amazing how well you can hear the notes of the tunes. Really incredible. I learned Suzuki method for violin as a young kid and learned by ear but obviously nothing like this
I'm so glad you looked at this song, and I'm happy that you enjoyed listening to it. ! It's one of my favorites from this album (even though the whole album is basically a masterpiece). Try "Wasted Years", which opens with a guitar jumping through a descending scale on the high E string played interlaced over the open E note. The title track is also really cool, featuring some really interesting guitar work. Hell, the whole thing is good! It was really cool listening to you lay some of this song out on the piano - gives it a whole new dimension. I don't know if it's Bruce doing the opening narration. I always thought it was someone else. As for historical accuracy, I think they may have taken some license with that part. I just looked at something the other night about ATG, and they said he became the Macedonian King at 20, where here they say he was 19. What's a year, right? They also said that the cause of his death is not known, but here they say "He died of fever in Babylon". Also, in the beginning, it seems as if his father is on his deathbed telling Alexander to go get his own kingdom - but the thing I looked at said his father was murdered. And I've read about some of the battles that he waged, which seem different from the ones they laid out here. Oh well - it's still a great song! Thanks for checking it out!
This whole album was perfection !!!
You could give some of Bruce Dickinson's solo stuff a whirl too... Jerusalem, for example. Adrian Smith also plays on that. Great reactions!

Doug, I absolutely love when you count out time signatures! It's something that has always fascinated me, even if I lack the skill to do so myself. Keep up the classic rock and metal, my dude! \m/
It is not just a joy to watch these, it's a privilege! Someone with this level of knowledge just sharing it like this is amazing. Think about what a time we live in for this to even be possible. That said, around 8:41 when you locked in and played it was so rad! That's a level of cool not a lot of people reach right there. Thank you for sharing your amazing talent, knowledge, and skill!
Why do we love Iron Maiden so much? Because its like listening to a full album with just listening one song.
Man... now I just want to hear you go through the whole album doing a piano jam session over it.
Great reaction, Doug. Playing with them on the fly, Very cool. Next: To Tame a Land. Epic!!!
Can I just take a moment to thank you for the content on your channel, I have been a heavy rock/heavy metal fan for over 40 years, and the way you break down the songs has given me a whole new perspective on the genre. Keep up the good work. 👍 👍👍
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son is a classic and Bruce is amazing, and for more great vocals and instrumentation, Infinite Dreams has a great instrumental section with some nifty guitar harmonies and chord changes. Another Maiden Masterpiece. My vote is Infinite Dreams.

I love how infinite dreams builds up and has an epic Bruce scream right in the middle of the song.
I've never realized how good this epic song would sound on the piano alone. (next The Evil That Men Do/Infinite Dreams or another history lesson - Paschendale)
I like so much your videos and your job, but this reaction was incredible. Particularly, I love Maiden, this sound (as this entire album) is beautiful. Congrats and thank you for your contribution.
Love this reaction, and how you can just immediately play over the top of it. So much talent! Please please PLEASE to Maidens When the Wild Wind Blows. You will absolutely love it!
The fact that we need this guy 35 years ago to deconstruct what Maiden was doing - just more evidence how awesome & great it all was.
0,56 "I' m working with the studio recording", there is no other possibility, millions of fans are waiting for that song to be played live! Great reaction video as always!
I love your insights Doug. Keep it up.
without words. blown away.....cheers from Winnipeg
Iron maiden fan here: next is Seventh son of a seventh son

Yes please do some Blind Guardian tunes. Appart from the already mentioned songs I think 'And the story ends' should be covered.
Your playing sounds incredible. Love what you're doing.
This channel is amazing, I love how you play the piano with this track.
Your reactions are not only a "simple" reaction, they are a musical classes. Thank you! From the 80's again, in my opinion, you should react to the song called "To Tame a Land" (Piece of Mind album). Based on the science fiction novel Dune. Author Frank Herbert refused to allow the band to call this song "Dune." The band originally sent a letter to Herbert's agent for permission. The response read as follows: "No. Because Frank Herbert doesn't like rock bands, particularly heavy rock bands, and especially rock bands like Iron Maiden." Songwriter Steve Harris tried to convince Herbert that the song would be a good promo for the book, but he still refused.

@@Benazgul Do you know the story between the song "Reckless" (Judas Priest) and the movie "Top Gun"? It was the other way around with Judas Priest. As the story tells us, Priest were approached in early 1986 for a possibility to offer a theme song for the movie as the soundtrack was due out via Columbia Records. Thus the band played them “Reckless,” which seemed like a perfect fit because of its content and style. Producers of the film liked the song and were ready to attach it over the closing credits, however what sank the deal was their demand that the rights of the track would exclusively go to films soundtrack. It meant Priest could not include it on their forthcoming album and that was just a price too high to pay at the time. Of course no one also knew how successful the film would become.

Well, the song is still clearly about Dune. It just doesn't bear that title. But it's undeniably about the book.
I was in 10th grade in high school when this came out. We had World History that year. The chapter on Alexander The Great, i just recited the lyrics to myself. 😆 I got those answers right. 😆
I wish I had your ear. I love how fast you pick this up in real time. Its fun to watch. I also like sound of the progressions on the piano.
Best channel I have come across in 2021!
To tame a land, that song has some of the most interesting armonies and chord progressions Maiden has ever done
I’ll keep recommending Iron Maiden’s ”Starblind”, ”The Talisman” and ”The Legacy”. More proggy, great storytelling, great music! These songs are more atypical as some other recommended Maiden songs and That’s why I think you’d like them! *yes it’s the same songs as before, I won’t give up!

I also agree with the lot that if you are to do Seventh son if a Seventh son I would recommend a whole album review!
First-time I saw maiden live was at Hammersmith Odeon in London on the somewhere in time tour in 86! Oh my god that was so long ago. I can still remember that night, awesome. I've followed this fantastic band for a really long time now. Last saw them at the O2 in London on the book of souls tour. Loving your vids Doug!
Some of us grew up with Iron Maiden ... listening them from far year of 1982 ... And congrats, Doug - you are becoming a big FAN now !!!
