🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:29 🌊 The Classical Waterfall Model Origin - The Classical Waterfall Model dates back to the 1970s and is considered an older approach to software development, primarily suited for smaller projects. 01:28 📊 Significance of Feasibility Study - Feasibility studies play a critical role in determining whether a software project is technically and financially viable before it proceeds. 02:28 🏗️ Phases in Software Development Life Cycle - The Classical Waterfall Model incorporates key phases in the software development life cycle, including feasibility study, requirement analysis, specification design, coding, unit testing, system testing, integration, and maintenance. 04:01 🛠️ Model's Advantages and Disadvantages - The model serves as a basic and straightforward approach, making it suitable for small projects where customer requirements are clear. - However, its rigidity and lack of flexibility present significant drawbacks, especially in terms of feedback and the ability to adapt to changes. 06:06 🔐 The Challenge of Feedback and Rigidity - The model's inflexibility and lack of feedback mechanisms mean that once a phase is completed, it cannot easily be revisited or adjusted, leading to high risk and problems that may only surface in the final stages. 07:09 🏡 Real-Life Analogy: Building a House - Drawing a real-life analogy, if you build a house without ongoing feedback, problems may become apparent only after the house is complete, necessitating significant changes and extra effort in the maintenance phase. 07:40 🐜 Frequent Bugs and Issues in Maintenance - Most issues and bugs arise when the software is deployed to end-users, requiring continuous maintenance efforts and leading to extra time and cost, making the maintenance phase crucial. What I learned in this lecture: The classical waterfall model first appeared in the 1970s Every singel model has at its heart the phases of the SDLC (Planning, Definition/Analysis, Design, Coding/Implementation, Testing, Deployment/Maintanence) Phases: 1.Feasability study - it is studied whether the software can be developed with the time and money available. 2.Requirments analysis and specification - a SRS document is made and given to the client with the data from the previous phase 3.Design 4.Coding and unit testing - testing of each individual small unit 5. System testing and integration - testing all the units together as a system. This includes alpha(testing of the software by the development team), beta(testing of the software by the client) and acceptance(the client deciding whether to accept the software or not after testing) testing. 6.Maintanence - in this phase 60% of the effort is spent Advantages: - Simple and easy - Good for small projects where the customer knows exactly what they want from the start and don't want to make any changes since this modle is not flexible Disadvantages: - No feedback - there is no feedback in between phases and if one team makes a mistake that mistake is carried over to the next phase without being fixed - No experimenting - No parallelism - while one team is working all other teams are idle and not doing anything instead of all teams working at the same time - High risk - since there is no feedback from beginning to end and the customer only sees the product at the end there is a high chance that they are not satisfied with the end result - 60% of the work is in the maintenance phase - since there is no feedback in between phases at the end all the errors which were not addressed in between phases have to be fixed
